Promo: A Hard Eight

Frost sits in his cramped dressing room in the Thomas and Mack Center. His right leg is propped up on a chair with a bag of ice on his ankle with a second bag held to the back of his neck. With his head bent down, he shifts his eyes to stare at the Superior One Tom Flesher standing above him. Flesher twirls a pair of sunglasses around in his right hand, but says nothing. An unsaid question hangs in the air that Flesher finally feels clawing at him and is forced to answer with a question of his own.

“Would you have wanted me to interfere?” Flesher snaps with a bite in his voice.

Frost takes a breath and removes the ice from his neck to shake his head and look at Tom fully. “Of course not, but still…” he trails off and hangs his head unsure of what his muddled thoughts are trying to stitch together.

“You wanted to help out your buddy,” Flesher says in a condescending tone “and you did. Maybe you lost, because you helped him out a little too much.”

“I lost because he was the better man tonight, if I helped him in some small way to be that, then I’m glad I did.” Frost replies wistfully.

“Great,” Tom beams “now we can go back to focusing on the really important match and defending the tag titles.”

Frost smiles at Frost, but it fades slowly in the dim shadow of the big man’s sneer. “So, me winning a shot at the World Title wasn’t an important match?”

Well, I’m sure it was to you,” Tom tries to save face “but we’re the World Tag Team Champions.” Flesher points to the title belt he has inexplicably strapped around his waist. “This has to be OUR main focus. If you had won tonight where would that have left our match with Judge and Ejiro? We can’t let the n00bs usurp our title reign. They need to learn their place in the Magnificent 7, like you have?”

“Like I have!” Frost screams with his voice boiling.

Frost holds up his hands and back peddle a few steps. “Whoa, whoa, hold on. We all have out place in the stable. I’m the leader and you’re…” Flesher makes sure to say the right thing “the heart and soul. You’re the guy who has been here since the beginning. Well, Danny William too, but he left for a time and you know he doesn’t put the effort into making this stable a force like you do. In the past month you’ve come to grips with what I do, I’ve come to grips with what you do. The right outcome was achieved tonight; you have to see that. I walked out there tonight to make sure that happened. We’re the Tag Champions and that is our place in the SWF. We individually have to tend to that.”

Frost seems satiated, knowing that the upcoming tag title match is a priority. However, there is just something of Flesher’s reasoning that sticks in his craw. The idea that Tom walked out to ringside not to help him, but to see if he would lose. A sacrificing of his partner that doesn’t sit well with him, especially if they are both trying to be a team player.

Flesher moves to go, thinking this talk over. Frost watches Tom leave and speaks as he reaches the outside hall. “You know, I told TNT earlier tonight that in a team you are only as good as your partner allows you to be.”

Flesher turns to look at Frost and ponders the statement. He taps his sunglasses on the doorframe for a second and then points them at the Icelander. “No,” he plainly answers, “you are only as good as you allow yourself to be. Other people can only screw you up.” Flesher then exits to the right to leave Frost staring at the back wall, badly in need of a new paint job.

Good stuff Frost. Along with your promo from the show you're doing quite a bit of really excellent character development here, and not just for your character.
