Wrestling With Shadows on DVD!!!!

... well, I'm pretty sure it's an exclusive, anyway.

 

I was talking to Paul Jay about getting Wrestling With Shadows put out on DVD, and he said that he's hoping for a release "within the next few months".

 

FUCKING AWESOME.

 

He didn't talk about the extras, but I mentioned that the Beyond The Mat DVD would be a good template. I said that we were expecting a shitload of extra footage (since the extended Hart Foundation family was interviewed extensively for WWS, as evidenced by all the Owen interview fotage in Paul's Owen documentary), a director's commentary, a Bret Hart commentary (hey, it could happen), and maybe a retrospective from Bret.

 

Anyway, just thought I'd pass that along.

They should have a director and Bret at the same time commentary rather than two separate commentaries though.

Either would be cool, and I don't doubt that it would be interesting to hear the two playing off each other. That said, I do feel that a standalone commentary by the director would provide a lot more insight into the business of filmmaking and the documentary itself, while Bret could provide insight on the story (and backstory) itself.

 

That said, there's no guarantee that there will be ANY commentary - I just suggested it to him to let him know the sort of stuff fans would dig. I'm sure Bret would be up for it...

I hope it's the uncensored version, Pat Patterson saying 'motherfucker' is one of my favourite parts of the film.

Patterson is SO funny in the film. From that scene laying out the match, he sounds like such a badass Goodfellas gangster (muther fucker this, muther fucker that).

 

When did they censor the flick? I bought a copy directly from the WWS site, and when someone stole it, I recorded it from the BBC, and both were uncensored, "Mother fucking no good bastard" and all. I'm sure the DVD will be uncensored.

A friend of mine has a two copies of the movie (I think) on VHS, and both of them are censored. I have a copy of it taped directly off of TVOntario and Patterson's language, along with Shawn Michaels' 'God as my fucking witness' are both in there.

Are the censored copies pre-taped or recorded off TV? If they're pre-recorded, did they come directly from the (now defunct) http://www.hitmanhart.com website, or were they from a store? The DVD will likely be taken from the same source as the VHS versions sold on the official site. Mine is uncensored, but it's the PAL version. I doubt the official NTSC version is different, but who knows...

I believe most stores carried the R-rated version, thus keeping all the language in place. They edited all that out when it was initially shown on A&E (although following the first airing, I saw it run uncnesored a few months later).

You know what would fucking rock? If one of the extras was a Stampede Wrestling match of Bret/Owen/Davey/whoever.

You know Bruce is just whoring himself for any help the McMahons can give him right now, so unless Vince blesses this DVD and doesn't try and bury it like he did with Beyond The Mat, I wouldn't hold your breath for any Stampede footage.

 

Although, a commentary from Vince would be absolutely fascinating. See the worlds of work and shoot collide! Bret screwed Bret! WrestleMania III sold 93,000 tickets!
