My senior project on professional wrestling

Recommended Posts

Guest RollingSambos

For my senior project, I am conducting a study on how pro wrestling (on TV) affects the behaviors and attitudes of the audience. Obviously, I need to survey serious wrestling fans to get my data, and I figured that this board would be the best place to go since you guys are the most die-hard viewers. It's only 19 multiple choice questions, with one optional question about Stone Cold Steve Austin at the end. If you don't want to participate, cool. If you can and will participate, thanks a lot. Also, if you don't feel comfortable publishing your answers for whatever reason, you can e-mail them to me at [email protected]. Thanks again!

1. What is your age?

19

2. How many hours of professional wrestling do you watch per week?

a) 2-4 hours

3. Have you ever been involved in domestic violence?

b) No. Though, I grew up in it as a very young child. But I've never participated and never will.

4. If so, were you the victim, the perpetrator, or both?

Indirect victim. My parents' fighting no doubt heavily influenced some of the psychological issues and personal mannerisms I deal with today.

5. If so, rate your experience level with domestic violence:

I don't directly remember alot of it for whatever reason. One incident I remember clearly, but I've collected enough data over the years to know there was likely more that effected my development psychologically.

a) I have experienced domestic violence several times

6. Have you ever participated in “backyard wrestling”?

As a manager/owner type of role. Filmed it. But rarely a physical participant in any matches, and certainly not a member of the "competitive roster", if you will.

7. How would you describe your personality type?

b) Normal

8. Are you more or less aggressive after watching professional wrestling?

c) The same

9. Do you settle arguments/confrontations with violence?

No.

10. What is your knowledge level of the effects of TV violence on human behavior?

b) Somewhat educated

11. In your opinion, does professional wrestling on TV cause violent behavior?

I feel that in young people (and older, to a degree) that are dealing with psychological issued that result in latching onto fantasy environments for personal validation and for definition of self, it's very possible to begin taking on the traits and mannerisms of the professional wrestlers they look up to. In extreme cases, I think that the idea that violence is the correct way to handle their "feuds" and social issues may spring up, though I would place more blame on the likely broken home situation that causes the need and attachment to fantasy in the first place.

12. How do you feel about participating in violence after watching professional wrestling?

c) No change

13. What is the primary reason that you watch professional wrestling?

b) Athleticism

14. What is the secondary reason that you watch professional wrestling?

c) Storylines

15. Do you feel that professional wrestling is responsible for aggressive behavior in its adult (18+) audience?

b)No. Prior psychological circumstance is, I believe, always the main factor to blame in extreme behavior. Wrestling may act as a trigger in the same manner that action movies or television shows do in that it provides something for the person to latch on to. But it is not responsible.

16. What is your favorite brand of professional wrestling?

a) WWE/WWF

17. Do you typically cheer the antagonist (heel) or protagonist (babyface) when watching wrestling on TV?

c) It doesn’t matter

18. Do you identify more with the antagonists or protagonists?

I tend to identify with both, but that's likely because as a storyteller and a writer, I seek out the character motivations. I identify with the tendance to lash out and be selfish in the heels, but also in the honorable convictions and noble nature of the babyfaces. There is a part of me that will always enjoy seeing the good guy pull out the win, but I also find satisfaction in the heels being held accountable for their actions and, down the line evolving into new characters because of it, whether for becoming more vile heels or for making a face turn.

19. What is your attitude towards the violence towards women in professional wrestling TV programming?

b) I am offended by it.

To a degree. I think that in situations where it's a heel trying to gain an advantage on a babyface by going after a girlfriend/valet/etc., it's passable because it's portrayed in the light that violence against women should be: something that the offender will be held accountable for and they will answer for eventually. But it being there just for the sake of being there, or worse when the supposed good guy partakes of it, I do not like.

20. (Optional) Briefly describe your thoughts on the incident of Stone Cold Steve Austin (Steve Williams) assaulting his wife Debra Williams:

I think it may have been blown out of porportion. I don't recall ever seeing a report on exactly what happened and we probably never will. It's Austin's business what happened and I don't need to know. The act itself, good or bad, is by no means justifiable, but I sincerely hope that Austin has settled the matter with Debra and that he has learned from the mistake and is working on whatever psychological factors played a part in the incident.

1. What is your age?

14. I'm also a male, if that means anything.

2. How many hours of professional wrestling do you watch per week?

In a normal week, probably A.

3. Have you ever been involved in domestic violence?

Thankfully, never. B.

6. Have you ever participated in “backyard wrestling”?

All the time.

7. How would you describe your personality type?

Usually quite docile, C.

8. Are you more or less aggressive after watching professional wrestling?

About the same, possibly more aggressive depending on what happens.

9. Do you settle arguments/confrontations with violence?

Only if the situation calls for it.

10. What is your knowledge level of the effects of TV violence on human behavior?

B. And that's only because of you wonderful people on here.

11. In your opinion, does professional wrestling on TV cause violent behavior?

On the contrary, I'd say it prevents people from being violent. If you were to take a look at WWE's audience, they're the kind of people who get bullied around, and so they watch wrestling and it is, basically, their dream - the underdog getting vengeance on the bully. So when they see this, they get more faith in themselves, and therefore don't feel the need to use violence because they have belief in themselves.

Of course, you're bound to get the occasional wackjob.

12. How do you feel about participating in violence after watching professional wrestling?

Definitely A. Wrestling's a huge energy boost for me.

13. What is the primary reason that you watch professional wrestling?

Probably storylines, although that's definitely not the only reason. If it were I'd be isolated from wrestling.

14. What is the secondary reason that you watch professional wrestling?

Comedy. I live to be entertained, and more and more the WWE has been catering to me.

15. Do you feel that professional wrestling is responsible for aggressive behavior in its adult (18+) audience?

C. Everybody is different.

16. What is your favorite brand of professional wrestling?

At this point, WWE. Though, that could easily change because of TNA.

17. Do you typically cheer the antagonist (heel) or protagonist (babyface) when watching wrestling on TV?

Antagonist. I generally get a good laugh out of the heels, because I feel I'm more like them most of the time.

18. Do you identify more with the antagonists or protagonists?

Probably the antagonists. At this point, I act a lot like Jericho and get a huge laugh out of him, in addition to Matt Hardy, John Cena, etc.

19. What is your attitude towards the violence towards women in professional wrestling TV programming?

C. I'm never going to do it to anyone, so I don't really give a damn.

6. As it's presently defined, no. When I was 11-13, a few of us used to throw down wrestling-style in the backyard, but without things like rings and the like. It was all for fun, not to try and hurt someone.

20. I believe that it was exaggerated, first of all. Second of all, it probably was just over conflicts in their private relationship. Many people have made Austin out as a "wifebeater", when this incident seems far too isolated to earn Austin that label. From what I understand, the man was under a lot of stress and she just set him off. She certainly didn't deserve it, but these things happen in intimate relationships at times.
