Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 14, 2003 I know everyone says the UN serves no function... ...but I don't like it. I think we're making a big mistake if this is passed.
Guest JMA Report post Posted March 14, 2003 I doupt it'll get passed. And if it does... eh.
Guest teke184 Report post Posted March 14, 2003 I'm torn on this... the UN has been proving itself to be the League of Nations over the last few years... BUT... why give up our permanent veto? If the French want to be pussies, we can start vetoing stuff that they need until they start playing the game. I guaran-goddamn-tee that if Algerian terrorists are rumored to be planning a strike on Paris that the French won't be asking for inspections of desert camps before they try to do something about it. Guest DrTom Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Good. Let's boot them the fuck out of NY while we're at it. If the UN wants to suck so much French dick, let them headquarter themselves in Paris. We still have two large towers full of office space that needs to be restored, and the UN building would be a nice renovation project for something like that. Guest JMA Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Hm. I wonder who would support the UN if the US withdrew. Not that I'm for it one way or another. Just a question.
Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Bad. I don't think a nation should be held hostage by the UN, but it helps in finding a peaceful solution when possible.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 14, 2003 fucking double post.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Let's be clear: I'm aware that the UN leeches our funding, our nation's land (their headquarters) and our military. I agree that it doesn't benefit us much. However, the symbolism of pulling out of all alliances is too grave at this point in time. It makes me feel like we're the bad guys here, and we're willing to take on the world to do whatever we want to do.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Yeah, as impotent as they may be, we seriously have to stick with it for a little while longer for diplomatic purposes. Would we also pull out of NATO, given their lack of support as well? Of course, I don't see how a Persian Gulf affair is the business of a NORTH ATLANTIC Treaty Organization, but we might pitch a fit about their lack of support as well. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Good. Get the fuck out and kick them the fuck out of New York. They need us. We don't need them at all.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 14, 2003 That's the kind of dumb fucking attitude that could cause another world war.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Continuing to let them stop us from taking out Saddam isn't doing wonders for the world either. Let's be clear: I'm aware that the UN leeches our funding, our nation's land (their headquarters) and our military. I agree that it doesn't benefit us much. You said it yourself. Why stick in such a one sided relationship? The UN has been useless for years now anyway.
Guest JMA Report post Posted March 14, 2003 I just hope the United States doesn't become all isolationist again.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Because withdrawing from the UN right now is a symbolic gesture that says "To hell with the rest of the world" It makes us the bad guys. It eliminates perhaps the final check on the president. If it's about economics or their leeching on us, do it at a less critical juncture. Not now.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted March 14, 2003 Because withdrawing from the UN right now is a symbolic gesture that says "To hell with the rest of the world" Kind of how the rest of the world has been saying "To Hell with the U.S." for a while now? Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 14, 2003 So that makes it right? We at least have some support right now. Just because some countries don't see the slaughter of tens of thousands of people as necessary, doesn't mean they are saying "fuck you".
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted March 14, 2003 I wish some people would realize that global diplomacy doesn't work as perfectly as if you and a group of your friends got into a tiff so you're all refusing to talk to each other again. It's a game of shades of grey, no black or white. Even though they say shit about us, they're the whole PLANET, we're just a single nation.
Guest Vyce Report post Posted March 15, 2003 So that makes it right? Yes, it does. The U.N. is our bitch. Or they're supposed to be, but they've managed to utterly embarass us here, so they deserve our wrath and some sort of punishment. We're using their mandates as justification for attacking Iraq, which irks me (they should have made the argument based upon the war on terrorism, but I doubt anyone would have cared), but other than that, I really don't see much worth in continuing to be a part of an illegitimate organization that spends a majority of its time chastising us. Or Israel. We at least have some support right now. Just because some countries don't see the slaughter of tens of thousands of people as necessary, doesn't mean they are saying "fuck you". Oh come off it. "Slaughter of tens of thousands of people" If you think anyone in say, the French government, gives a shit about potential Iraqi casualties, then you're sadly mistaken. The majority of the countries opposing us in the U.N. are doing so because they hate us or they have some sort of economic relationship with Saddam which we threaten to destroy by our war. This is so NOT about the morality of war, despite whatever rhetoric comes out of the U.N.

Or Israel. If you truly think we should go it alone, with the world at our back, I have to question your sanity. Step off of YOUR high horse and realize that if we want to be the fucking crusaders of the world, we need to at least be the GOOD GUYS in this. By seperating ourselves from the world and throwing them out on the street, we make ourselves the bad guys who cried because nobody else supported us in our stupid little holy war. By going it alone, this makes us no better than our enemies; we're pursuing an unpopular, even hated war where people think WE'RE WRONG. Oh come off it. "Slaughter of tens of thousands of people" If you think anyone in say, the French government, gives a shit about potential Iraqi casualties, then you're sadly mistaken. This is so NOT about the morality of war, despite whatever rhetoric comes out of the U.N. I refuse to believe that everyone in the UN who doesn't agree with this war has a "SECRET AGENDA". No, wait... maybe they do. Peace? Whoa. Imagine that. No matter how many "SECRET FINANCIAL STATEMENTS" we've found, we're just as guilty as they are. This isn't about money (the French aside), this is about saving lives.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted March 15, 2003 I really don't see much worth in continuing to be a part of an illegitimate organization that spends a majority of its time chastising us. Or Israel. I was going to say that. Not just the US, but Israel. Israel is continuously fucked by the UN, because, well, because by the very definition of the word, An anti-Semite group would dislike Jews.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 15, 2003 That is utterly absurd. The reason the UN has Israel's balls is because if they didn't, Israel would slaughter every fucking Arab in the Western Hemisphere, nuclear treaties be damned.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted March 15, 2003 I refuse to believe that everyone in the UN who doesn't agree with this war has a "SECRET AGENDA". No, wait... maybe they do. Peace? Which is achieved by letting the madman wih the chemical and biological weapons stay in charge.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 15, 2003 Allegations which still haven't been proven... When there's no evidence that he even intends to use them against us... (unless, of course, we invade him) When the guy is the biggest fucking ham in the world, asking for attention by refusing to do anything... I don't agree with his being the leader of the country either. He completely lacks a conscience, and he's a horrible leader for the country. Do you believe we should slaughter their conscripted (mostly against their will) soldiers because of this?
Guest Ozymandias Report post Posted March 15, 2003 He completely lacks a conscience, and he's a horrible leader for the country. Agreed. But it's surprising he & Bush don't get along better considering the things they have in common (which you just mentioned)....
Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted March 15, 2003 See, the thing about the U.N. is it makes it a lot easier to know who your allies are. Don't blame the U.N. for the lack of cooperation, blame the French.
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 15, 2003 Eh, he tried to kill the guy's father. I think that's the biggest motivation behind this "crusade" against Iraq, at least in Bush's mind.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted March 15, 2003 Allegations which still haven't been proven... We've also got frigging Inspector Gadget on the case. A man who couldn't find his hand in front of is face and if he does decides to ignore it. And isn't it that he's not allowed to have them regardless of who he wants to use them against?
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted March 15, 2003 Yeah, and I think he's gonna be a hell of a lot less cooperative about it, given the fact that we've got 500,000 troops at his back door. If he has them. Which he may or may not. However, if he does, you can bet he'll definitely use them now, costing a ton of unneeded casualties (if we'd just bulk up the fucking inspections and give them the necessary intel, this might not have been the case).
