Playstation 2 as DVD Player

Hey, my housemate recently moved out, and with him went the DVD player. However, we do still have a PS2 and a TV, but I've heard that the PS2 is a bad DVD player because the laser is much more apt to scratch/ruin DVDs (I also heard XBOX does the same thing). I have no idea if this is based in any truth or not... is it? I HATE watching DVDs on my laptop, but I'll gladly prefer that to risking my DVDs if that's based in truth.

Well, I'm no expert on the subject, but I've never had any of my... six or seven DVD's messed up by it.

I've never had a problem with DVDs on PS2.

I had problems playing DVDs with my PS2. Sometimes the DVD would skip or freeze up. However, the PS2 never scratched or ruined any of them. I wouldn't recommend buying a PS2 as a DVD player, but if you have one already, I don't see any problem with using it.

Some DVD's just won't work for whatever reason, but I haven't heard anything about permanent damage

I have heard that the DVD player in the PS2 was top of the line for it's day. So use the PS2 as a DVD player until you find the need to buy an actual DVD player. I have never seen any scratched on my DVD's that I own.

if you have the older PS2 it might not run properly (ie freezing, skipping, pain in the ass load times). X-Box does freeze as well, but it rarely happens.

 

Is the PS2 on the ground, or on an unsteady table, cause any movement can cause a problem.

Why would anyone buy that PS2 stand so their PS2 could stand upright? I honestly never got that.

 

Anyway, I've never had any problems with my PS2 as a DVD player, and I've used all my DVDs on it.

I never got that one either.

 

I've had no problems for my PS2 as a player. I notice the picture isn't as great when you see something on a good dvd player, but it's not bad or anything.

Back in July of '01 I used my PS2 as a DVD player for about 5 months. It kept skipping movies. I finally went out and got a good DVD player, and now I don't have that problem. Plus, the picture is a lot better...

The Playstation 2's DVD driver is upgradeable - The latest version can be found on the disc that comes with the official Playstation DVD remote.

 

It supposedly fixes alot of problems with newer discs, and adds progressive scan support.

It's on the ground, and it's steady, so I shouldn't have any problems from that.

 

Thanks to all for answering, glad it was just another false internet thing, now I can watch my DVDs in peace, since I sure as hell won't be able to afford another DVD player for a while.

That's true. I recently updated everyone on my PS2 and all my DVD's work perfectly on it, no trouble at all.

I've had a PS2 for over 2 years and it never scratched a disk 4 me. Most my mates use their PS2's for DVDs too with no problem. I don't think its a risk.

I've never had a problem with DVDs on my PS2.

 

BTW, what version are they up to with the remote/disc package? I think the last one I bought was 2.4.
