Guest Downhome Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 Oh yes, there was indeed a film industry way back then, lol. I rarely here any of you guys talk about older film, and I thought I'd bring up this topic. From the 20's-00's, what is your favortie film in each of these decades? If you've never seen a film from one of those decades, then don't worry about it. I will be honest and say that I've never seen a film from the Pre-Sound Era (before 1920), so I didn't include it here. If you have seen any though, mention them here, as there ARE films before even the 20's, many of which are said to be classics. Try to mention ONLY one movie from each decade as your "favorite", but if you want to mention more that you love, feel free. I'm having a very hard time with a few of these picks, especially the 30's, the 70's and the 80's. Anyhow, here are my picks, decade by decade... 20's --- Nosferatu (1922) 30's --- The Wizard of Oz (1939) 40's --- Casablanca (1942) 50's --- The Ten Commandments (1956) 60's --- Psycho (1960) 70's --- The Godfather (1972) 80's --- The Untouchables (1987) 90's --- American Beauty (1999) 00's --- Memento (2001) ...this was very hard for me to to, more than I thought it would be. In almost each decade, I had to really sit here for a while and think about which one I really wanted to pick. I also find it great that for the 90's, three of the main movies that I was trying to decide which one to pick from, all stared Kevin Spacey. I suppose that is why he is my favorite actor, of all time. So, have at it people, this should be interesting. Sincerely, ...Downhome...
Guest Youth N Asia Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 30's: Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939) 40's: It's a Wonderful Life (1946) 50's: Shane (1953...come back, Shane!) 60's: Cool Hand Luke (1967) 70's: Dawn Of The Dead (1979) 80's: Full Metal Jacket (1987) 90's: Reservoir Dogs (1992) 00's...Memento (2001) I had a hell of a time picking 50s, 60s, and 90s. a top 3, 5, or 10 of each year would have been fun

Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 Lord of the Rings wouldn't rank anywhere near my top movies of the OOs
Guest Downhome Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 Damn, Memento's 4 for 4 so far, beating out the likes of Lord of the Rings, and Rollerball. Thar be a reason fer this here happening. As many know, it's my personal favorite film of all time, while also being the greatest in my eyes.
Guest Downhome Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 Lord of the Rings wouldn't rank anywhere near my top movies of the OOs Same here, I could list quite a few movies that have came out durring the 00's so far which I would place over either one of the LOTR.

Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted March 17, 2003 Report Posted March 17, 2003 20's - I've really not seen enough from the 20's to judge. 30's - All Quiet On The Western Front 40's - The Third Man 50's - Ikiru (this is by far the hardest decade for me to pick) 60's - Yojimbo 70's - The Godfather 80's - Raiders of the Lost Ark 90's - Rushmore 00's - The Royal Tenenbaums That looks pretty good. Double Wes Anderson love is a bit much, but Rushmore is certainly my personal favorite film from that era, and I can't say that much beats Tenenbaums on that front yet in the 00's. The 50's were hard as hell to figure out. The Seven Samurai and Touch of Evil could just as easily be there for me.

It wasn't such hard thread... I couldn't chose between many of the movies I listed, so gave my favorites for each decade. I am sorry to offend you in any way. For example, I loved The Godfather and I loved Taxi Driver, I couldn't pick one, so I listed both. Both were very influential, and so I put them both in, I couldn't really chose between the two. So Sue me... shesh

Guest godthedog Posted March 17, 2003 Report Posted March 17, 2003 00's-Saving Private Ryan? saving private ryan came out in the summer of '98. 20s--greed 30s--mr smith goes to washington (it's so sad that all i can remember from the 30s is frank capra & jean renoir) 40s--it's a wonderful life 50s--touch of evil 60s--pierrot le fou 70s--the godfather 80s--raging bull 90s--schindler's list 00s--ghost world (so far) favorite decade--probably the 60s. welles made 2 great movies (the trial & chimes at midnight), truffaut made 2 great movies (shoot the piano player & jules et jim), kurosawa did throne of blood, & godard was cranking out 2 or 3 good-to-great movies A YEAR till 1968. made more movies in seven years than kubrick made in a lifetime. favorite year--1999. i attach a lot of sentimental value to it because i was working at a movie theater, but that was just an incredible year for american movies. i went to see a movie almost every weekend that fall, either to see something new or to see something again that i loved. lots of times i'd see movies 2 or 3 times in one weekend. the matrix (easter weekend)...the blair witch project, eyes wide shut, three kings (summer)...american beauty, fight club, bringing out the dead, being john malkovich, the insider (fall)...then there's the movies officially released in 1999 that i didn't get to see till the next year (magnolia, boys don't cry, the war zone)...and i'm sure i'm leaving things out.

Guest Banky Posted March 17, 2003 Report Posted March 17, 2003 I'd easily take Fletch as the 80's option.
