Bret Hart vs. Sid, Cage Match

Recommended Posts

Guest Aero

In wrestling, whenever March 17, St. Patrick's Day of course, rolls around, I always remember that day in 1997... six years ago.

The main event for this episode of RAW was scheduled to be Sycho Sid vs. Bret Hart in a Cage Match. However, throughout the night, the big question was: Will the title be up for grabs? It was one week before Wrestlemania 13, and this one main event on RAW could change the face of WM. Already set, of course, were the Title match of Sid vs. Undertaker and the Submission match of Bret vs. Austin. If Bret won, then he and Austin would fight for the gold at WM, but if Sid won, than everything stayed the same. At the top of the second hour of RAW, Gorilla Monsoon announced that the title would, indeed, be on the line. From there, we'd see a pissed off Undertaker and Sid, and for the first time in weeks, Bret actually had a smile on his face and claimed that there was finally some justice in the WWF since returning. '

Although the match, itself, isn't exactly a classic, it's such a great angle. When Sid tries to escape through the door, Austin runs out and shuts it in his face. When both Bret and Sid are fighting on top of the cage, Austin climbs up and actually helps Bret. From there, it didn't take long before the Undertaker ran out and helped his opponent for WM, Sid. In the end, both Bret and Sid are trying to escape. Sid is climbing the cage, and Bret is just about to walk out the door, when suddenly, the Undertaker slams the door in Bret's face, allowing Sid to jump to the floor and retain.

When they come back from a commercial, Bret is standing in the ring while the ring crew takes down the cage. Vince McMahon attempts to interview him, but instead, Bret SNAPS and starts cussing everyone out. Here's a transcription I have...

::Vince McMahon:: "Bret Hart, you've got to be terribly frustrated... extremely frustrated over what just happened..."

(Bret shoves Vince down to the mat and grabs the mic)

::Bret Hart:: "Frustrated isn't the goddamn word for it! This is bullshit! You screwed me. Everybody screwed me, and nobody does a goddamn thing about it! Nobody in the building cares, nobody in the dressing room cares... so much goddamn injustice around here! I've had it up to here! Everybody knows it. I know it. Everybody knows it. I should be the World Wrestling Federation Champion! Everybody keeps turning a blind eye. You keep turning a blind eye to it. I got that Gorilla Monsoon... he keeps turning a blind eye to it! Everybody in that goddamn dressing room knows that I'm the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be! And if you don't like it... tough shit!"

From there, Austin appears on the Titantron and rants about how Bret is a loser. He claims that it could have been him and Bret for the title at WM, but he blew it. Bret responds with one of my fav lines... "You know why they call you stone cold? Your stones... they're so cold, you don't have the guts to come to this ring!" Before Austin gets down there, Sid walks out, and Bret dives at him. Austin runs down and brawls with Bret on the ramp and in the ring. It's not long before the Undertaker makes an appearance and starts his fight with Sid. It's pure mayhem, as all the referees and security try and break the fights up. Soon, Shawn Michaels, who's still looking for his smile, wanders down. He grabs a chair and teases interfering in the Bret-Austin brawl several times, when finally, RAW goes off the air...

It's one of my favorite segments ever in the WWF, and my favorite RAW moment. (Screw the Austin beer truck!) I somehow have the entire thing on tape, too. As RAW went off that night, I was so pumped for Wrestlemania 13.

Any other thoughts, comments?

OoooOooh, I loved that RAW. That was such an infamous Bret moment in the beginning of his heel turn.

Unfortunately, thats one of the RAWs I don't have on tape, that I'd love to get.

Probably my all-time favorite wrestling-related quote, with JR's "Aww sonuvabitch" when Vince was revealed as the Higher Power...or maybe Vince's "HE JUST HIT HALL OF FAMER PAT PATTERSON! THAT DIRTY ROTTEN SON OF A...uh...THAT SON OF A..."

I've got it on tape somewhere a home. Classic.

LMAO

That is gold.

I remember watching that live as a 15 year old ubermark. Everyone seemed to be pro-Austin at that point and that whole incident gave me a bad taste in my mouth. Bret had never been anything other than a stand up guy on screen and I didn't like the fact they were tampering with that image.

Yes, I have a fair quality copy of that match and the post-match shenanigans. I remmember watching it live and thinking "to hell with Nitro, this is too cool"

You forgot one other classic line:

Bret to Sid "You know I'm better"

Sid "I don't know shit!"

Ah yes! No dead body raping, no formerly undead satanists cheating on their wives, no finger pokes - just pure hatred, and good buildup! A great angle withuot the whistles or bells!

"The writing in the WWE in the past 6 months has been good as it's ever been."

- Ken Anderson paraphrase. WHAT...a moron.

I don't know if I'd use this incident to show how crappy the WWE is today. The "bullshit" thing was thrown in for shock value - the same reason all the Katie Vick and Al Wilson stuff was used.

Bret had no problem with it because he was told that part wasn't going to be televised. But it was - basically because the WWF had to dig themselves out of the hole WCW put them in.

I hear Bret figured they would air an edited version of it on Livewire/Superstars the next weekend. Little did he know . . .
