What does Kernel32.dll do?

Recently I've been having problems with the system file Kernel32.dll First it's basically taken ASFRecorder out of the equation every time I load it up getting an illegal operation. Now I can't use the AOLIM portion of Trillian 1.0 as I get another illegal operation. What's the deal with this file? Can I get rid of it without harming my system? Any help would be appreciated.

This error message can occur for any of the following reasons: An unexpected event has occurred in Windows. An "invalid page fault" error message often indicates that a program improperly attempted to use random access memory (RAM). Do not get rid of it the Kernal it is the Heart of Windows OS.

Have you tried using Nortan Utilities to fix the problem or at least Scan Disk?

Actually I just tried that and it solved 1/2 the problem. There was a disk error with a log file for one of my AOLIM contacts (Trillian logs every conversation you have) that was causing the problem. It didn't explain the problem wtih ASFRecorder though.

If I didn't use Norton Antivirus 2003 updated as of like... today then that'd worry me. Thanks for the heads up though.

I had the same problem with my old computer and I had to get help from Microsoft. They told me that it was a problem with the FAN. I kid you not. Something about it not cooling the hard drive enough, and that was causing problems with the Kernel32 file. I didn't understand then, I don't undestand now. I never found a way to fix it, hardware wise OR software wise and eventually just got a new computer.

 

Though now I use the old computer to simply write scripts on and record music I never have the problem. Either reformatting the entire drive fixed it or not using it as much keeps it from over-heating if that was really the problem.

The fan? I cant see that myslef, but you never know.

 

Ive been having a similar problem. Every now and then I get a vital error message pop up saying that a problem with the kernel.dll has occured. When I click ok, all programs in memory at the time close, and the active desk top is removed. My comp is old, so I just put it down to that.

 

Anyone know more?
