What does Kernel32.dll do?

Recommended Posts

Guest Pegasus Kid

Recently I've been having problems with the system file Kernel32.dll First it's basically taken ASFRecorder out of the equation every time I load it up getting an illegal operation. Now I can't use the AOLIM portion of Trillian 1.0 as I get another illegal operation. What's the deal with this file? Can I get rid of it without harming my system? Any help would be appreciated.

Try here or here.

CAUSE

This error message can occur for any of the following reasons: An unexpected event has occurred in Windows. An "invalid page fault" error message often indicates that a program improperly attempted to use random access memory (RAM). For example, this error message can occur if a program or a Windows component reads or writes to a memory location that is not allocated to it. When this behavior occurs, the program can potentially overwrite and corrupt other program code in that area of memory.

A program has requested data that is not currently in virtual memory, and Windows attempts to retrieve the data from a storage device and load it into RAM. An "invalid page fault" error message can occur when Windows cannot locate the data. This behavior often occurs when the virtual memory area becomes corrupted.

The virtual memory system has become unstable because of a shortage of physical memory (RAM).

The virtual memory system has become unstable because of a shortage of free disk space.

The virtual memory area is corrupted by a program.

A program is attempting to access data that is being modified by another program that is running.

Have you tried using Nortan Utilities to fix the problem or at least Scan Disk?

Actually I just tried that and it solved 1/2 the problem. There was a disk error with a log file for one of my AOLIM contacts (Trillian logs every conversation you have) that was causing the problem. It didn't explain the problem wtih ASFRecorder though.

Anyway, thanks for all the help guys; its very much appreciated.

Er... yeah. There are many viruses out there that attach themselves to the kernel file, FYI.

If I didn't use Norton Antivirus 2003 updated as of like... today then that'd worry me. ;) Thanks for the heads up though.

I had the same problem with my old computer and I had to get help from Microsoft. They told me that it was a problem with the FAN. I kid you not. Something about it not cooling the hard drive enough, and that was causing problems with the Kernel32 file. I didn't understand then, I don't undestand now. I never found a way to fix it, hardware wise OR software wise and eventually just got a new computer.

Though now I use the old computer to simply write scripts on and record music I never have the problem. Either reformatting the entire drive fixed it or not using it as much keeps it from over-heating if that was really the problem.

The fan? I cant see that myslef, but you never know.

Ive been having a similar problem. Every now and then I get a vital error message pop up saying that a problem with the kernel.dll has occured. When I click ok, all programs in memory at the time close, and the active desk top is removed. My comp is old, so I just put it down to that.

Anyone know more?
