cawthon777 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2003 The very first WWF show I attended was at the Capital Centre in May of 1993. Small arena but a regular stop on the tour. I had been watching wrestling for almost a year and was a few weeks removed from the first PPV I saw live (WrestleMania IX). I was not quite 12 years old at the time. Before the show started, I got my dad to buy me a program (which was basically a smaller version of WWF magazine sold at the arenas that highlighted all the current storylines and rivalries...it also included the night's line-up). The first thing I noticed on the line-up was that the scheduled match between the Nasty Boys and the Headshrinkers had been changed to the Smoking Gunns vs. the Headshrinkers. This kinda pissed me off since I was looking forward to that match after the two had a concession stand brawl on Raw a few months prior. The Nastys weren't there due to their suspension which led to them jumping to WCW a month or two later. Here's the card as I remember it... The Brooklyn Brawler vs. Jim Powers - I wanted Powers to win cause he was cool looking. He didn't. I was temporarily sad, but then I remembered that I didn't come to the show to see this match anyway. Then I was happy. El Matador vs. Damien Demento - Demento was pretty cool due to the fact he would regularly have conversations with his hands ... and he was freaky looking. Same finish as Santana / HBK at WrestleMania VIII (as a young kid already well-versed in Coliseum Home Video PPV releases I asked myself "Couldn't Tito have learned to counter that move in the past year?") Bob Backlund vs. Blake Beverly - The crowd wasn't really behind Backlund - except for two old fat guys in the front row who seemed to have a love affair with Backlund dating back to his championship days of the late 70s. Opie Taylor picked up the win with some sort of roll up, perhaps into a bridge. Mr. Perfect vs. Shawn Michaels - The ad for this show in the Washington Post was built around this particular matchup that I was very much looking forward to. These two put on a great contest, one that to this day may be the best bout I've ever seen in person. Great psychology, Michaels played the perfect cowardly heel, and the crowd could not have been more behind Perfect. Eventually, the champ nails Perfect in the head with the IC title. Before the dazed referee can make the three count, the Gunns and Jim Powers rushed the ring and told the referee what happened. Rather than DQ the champ the referee orders for the match to continue, Perfect makes the Superman comeback ... kicks the tar out of HBK ... gets the 3-count, only for the referee to notice that Michaels' foot was on the bottom rope so the match AGAIN continues. Seconds later, Perfect catches Michaels sleeping and slaps on the Perfect Plex for the 1...2...*ding ding* Oh wow, we have a new champion, right? Nope, the 20-minute time limit had expired. Awesome match. I have pics of it on my website (check the sig at the bottom). Intermission ... Howard Finkel announces that the WWF will return to this area in late June with a show in Baltimore. The matches signed so far will pit Mr. Perfect against Lex Luger, a rare heel vs. heel match when Michaels puts up the IC title against Razor Ramon, and a rare face vs. face match when Bret Hart meets Bob Backlund. The next Cap Center show would be in July and would have the main event of Hulk Hogan vs. Yokozuna (which got a huge pop). Hogan, of course, would be a no show after KOTR and would be replaced by Bret. The Smoking Gunns vs. the Headshrinkers - This was pretty cool since the Gunns had yet to make their TV debut. Up till this point, they had only been seen on vignettes shown on Raw and the syndies where they're hanging out at their ranch. Their music hits and BAM ... the Gunns come out shooting blanks. My dad thought it was pretty cool but it kinda scared the crap out of me. The Shrinkers use a lot of illegal double teaming, with Afa distracting the referee as often as possible. The Shrinkers eventually picked up the cheap win which would lead to a rematch 2 months later in this same arena - this time with Afa subbing for Fatu. Yokozuna vs. Jim Duggan - I wasn't a huge Duggan fan but I like America and I didn't like Yoko, so Duggan got my vote of support. Hacksaw goes for the running clothesline ... Fuji grabs the foot, preventing him from hitting it ... Duggan turns around to jaw with Fuji ... Yoko squashes Hacksaw in the corner and follows up with the Bonzai for the win. Kamala vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - This match was supposed to happen at WrestleMania but didn't for whatever reason. I'm going to assume that if it had, Mania IX would not be as highly regarded as it is today (*insert laugh track here*). Not much of a match. Kamala gains the advantage and tries pinning Bigelow with his stomach against the mat. The fans and referee tell Kamala to turn him over. He gets confused and tries to talk to the referee ... Bigelow rolls him up from behind for the pin. Bret Hart vs. Lex Luger - Bret was and is my favorite and I had high hopes that he would kick the tar out of Luger for knocking the Hitman out at the WrestleMania IX brunch a few weeks prior. And that's pretty much what happens. Earlier in the night, Luger came out for the match but was told that he would have to wear a protective armband or he would be fined and suspended by Jack Tunney. So the main event is saved for the main event instead of before intermission. Luger comes out with the armband, Bret kicks the crap out of him, uses the 5 Moves of Doom, goes for the Sharpshooter ... and who should run in but Razor Ramon. The two double team Bret and Razor holds the Hitman for Luger to use the running forearm ... Bret ducks ... Luger knocks Razor out cold. Bret sends Luger to the floor. This altercation and others like it around the tour would lead to a brief Razor vs. Luger run before Luger turned face on July 4. This was a matinee show so afterwards, my parents and I along with a crap load of other people stood outside the arena and watched as wrestlers took off in their cars. What I found odd is that HBK and Razor left together - even though they were scheduled to fight at the show in Baltimore the next month.

Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted March 19, 2003 Damn, mine was was late 86/early 87. It was a Superstars/Challenge TV taping at Glens Falls, NY. I can't remember everything, but Andre was there, don't remember him wrestling though. Koko w/Frankie, Butch Reed, ( I think) Bushwackers, and a few others. Only matches I can remember were Can Am Connection upsetting the Hart Foundation in a non-title match. Tito Santana and Greg Valentine doing their weekly 15 minute draw. and the Main Event was World Champion Hulk Hogan Vs IC Champion Randy Savage. (Guess who did the job?) Guest snuffbox Report post Posted March 19, 2003 I attended a number of WWF shows in the 80s but was too young to really remmber much. But I did get to see every major WWF wrestler of the 80s live, Andre, Warrior, Hogan, Savage, DiBiase etc. Which is very cool! As far as solid memories go, I saw a WWF house show at the LaCrosse WI civic center in late 1990(or early 91, damn my memory kicks ass!) Tony Atlas as Saba Simba the Racist Gimmick beat Playboy Buddy Rhodes. Paul Roma pinned Marty Janetty after Hercules hit him with his chain. Shawn was there, and the Rockers cleaned house afterwards. Ronnie Garvin beat Boris Zoukoff. Ted DiBiase beat Dusty Rhodes in a good match. I liked seeing Rhodes live as I was aware of his popular past. As a lil mark I hated the Million $ Man. Main Event - LOD defeated Demolition. Live, this match was awesome! I know Im forgetting a few matches. Cawthon, would you happen to have LaCrosse results up on your page? Guest Kahran Ramsus Report post Posted March 19, 2003 June 11, 1989 at Maple Leaf Gardens I had just turned 9, and had been watching for about 16 months at that point. They had come nearby before, but this was the first time I actually went, after my parents decided to take me. My mother has been a wrestling fan about as long as I have. Two days earlier Hercules had an autograph signing at Oshawa Centre that I went to and since this was the first time I had ever met a wrestler in person I was pretty hyped for this show. Jack Tunney & Billy Red Lyons would make various appearances throughout the show, as they always did in Canada. The results... Rick Martel d. Tito Santana I hated Tito as a kid, so I was quite happy about this one. Dino Bravo d. Hercules Bravo cheated by hanging on to the ropes as Herc went for a sunset flip from the outside. Not too happy about this one. The Bushwhackers d. The Brainbusters I still don't understand this. The Bushwhackers pretty much squash them and then toss Blanchard on Arn for the pin. How Arn can be pinned by his own partner is beyond me. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine d. "Rugged" Ronnie Garvin I don't even remember this match. Mr. Perfect fought Bret Hart to a 20 minute draw Bret got the biggest face heat of the night which surprised me. Canada always loved the guy. Bret had Perfect beat (for the first time ever), but the time limit ran out. This was the best live match I had seen up until 2000. Paul Roma d. Boris Zhukov The crowd shit on this match after the last one. Very loud boring chants. I wonder why they just didn't do Stallions/Bolsheviks. WWF Champion Hulk Hogan d. "Macho Man" Randy Savage Usual 1989 match from these guys. Decent and fun. Hogan beats up Sherri & finishes with the usual. I still don't know why it wasn't the main, considering Hogan won. This is the only time I have seen Hogan win. Every other time I've seen him he's been on job duty. WWF Tag Team Champions Demolition d. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers The Rougeaus were traitors at this point, and thus hated. I still loved them though. Jimmy Hart gets involved towards the end, but Demos still win with the Decapitation. Jake "The Snake" Roberts d. "Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase This was the match I came to see. This is just prior to the Dibiase injures Jake's neck angle. Even I could tell the finish a mile away as they set up a chair outside prior to the match. Sure enough, Dibiase is DQd for nailing Roberts with the chair. Virgil gets the Damien treatment. End of show.
Guest papacita Report post Posted March 19, 2003 I vaguely remember the card, but it was a May 92 house show at the Spectrum. The matches were (from what I can remember): Warrior Vs Papa Shango: Was originally supposed to be Sid, but he left the WWF before the event. Anyway, Warrior won with Flying Shoulderblock/Big Splash combo. LOD Vs the Beverly Brothers: Was the final match on the card. The Beverly Brothers' theme song was loud as hell from what I can remember. Anyway, LOD won with a modified version of the Doomsday Device (Blake or Beau got caught in like a spinebuster position and Hawk came off the top with the clothesline). Bret Hart Vs HBK for the I-C Title: Shawn got a surprisingly good pop from what I can remember (though most of them were probably from women). At one point, Bret got Shawn in the sharpshooter and back then I SWORE Shawn broke the hold, but now that I look back on it, it's more likely that he grabbed the ropes. The match ended after Shawn accidentally hit Sherri and Bret pinned him. Owen Hart and Jim Powers Vs The Nasty Boys: Nastys won but Powers actually got some good offense in. What ever happened to him, anyway? Crush Vs Kato: This was prior to Crush's TV debut. He pretty much squashed Kato, but won with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker I think. Hacksaw Jim Duggan Vs Repo Man: I don't even remember who won this one. All I can remember is Hacksaw knocking Repo to the floor and him hiding beside the ring apron to ambush Hacksaw...and he said "SHHH!" to the crowd...used the finger and everything. It's that kinda fan interaction that's sorely missing from wrestling these days. Rick Martel Vs Tito Santana: Again, I can't even remember who won. All I know is that it was very similar to a match between the two that aired on PTW earlier in the week. Martel won the televised match (I think), so Tito probably went over here. There may have been one more match, but I don't remember. I do know that the crowd and music were both loud as hell, and had my ears ringing for a few hours. That and I bought a pair of Bret Hart sunglasses and an I-C belt...both of which I lost within a span of 2 months.
Guest EternallyLazy Report post Posted March 19, 2003 The first wrestling event I attended was kind of depressing looking back on it... imagine Ravishing Rick Rude and the Honky Tonk Man in 1992... both men unemployed, working an indy event in the small hick city of Wichita Falls Texas... in front of, I swear, 30 people IF that. It was the perfect definition of a bomb scare. I was 9 at the time, and even though it must have been depressing for these guys to go out and perform in front of just a few people, I remember having a great time. I was a huge wrestling fan and I would've gone anyway, but what really excited me was getting to see Rick Rude... one of the very few heels that I liked as a mark. He seemed like a nice guy, but you could tell that he didn't want to be there. I remember getting an autograph from him, and he never looked up. He just kept his head down the whole time. I can't say I blame him. The scheduled main event was the Honky Tonk Man vs. Greg the Hammer Valentine, but Valentine didn't show up. Honky's excuse was that he had chickened out... so he was just going to take his money and leave, because he had better things to do than to be here. Then, out came WCCW legend Ice Man King Parsons. This was exciting for me, because growing up in texas during the 80's and early 90's, I got to see a little bit of WCCW and USWA wrestling, and I remember watching Parsons when he was the Texas champion. The match probably wasn't a classic by any means, but in something I'll never forget... afterwards, Ice Man invited all the kids to come up and shake his hand, and we all did (all 10 of us) After shaking his hand, he put his hand on my shoulder and said "How'd you like the show red?" (I have red hair) Of course, this event was nothing compared to the other events I've been to over the years, but it's probably the most special for me, not just because it was my first, but because I actually got to see Rick Rude in person, which is something that obviously will never happen again

Guest Choken One Report post Posted March 19, 2003 I don't remember my first all that Hot...I remember meeting Bossman but that's about it. I However, Clearly remember Going to a show around 1996, and it was Owen/Shawn and JUST before the match...I went with my Aunt whom was a Resident Advisor, whom took care of Handicaped Retards. She managed to get us backstage and We supposed to meet Undertaker but according to my aunt said "No Thanks, Sweetie" but OWEN (remember he was a heel) promptly out of Nowhere walked out and Hugged those guys and handed them Undertaker and HBK shirts (which is kinda ironic) and He shook my hand and I asked "Who You Wrestling tonight?" He smiled and said "Some Pretty Boy, Shawn Micheals or something" and smiled and waved bye to us. It was amazing...I was the only one at the arena cheering Owen on...Him and Shawn gave a GREAT match. Another COOL thing was in 1996 as well (different show), The Main was HHH/HBK and I was a HBK mark at the time...I made a Sign with HBK pics all over it...I had front row seats. Well, Come showtime...Hening (whom was managing HHH at the time) walked by and talked trash about how pathetic I was. Shawn came out. Shawn and HHH went at it for a few minutes...As Hening taunted the fans (me in particular) I got bumped and I dropped the sign right by the ring... Perfect takes notice of that....He walks over and Grabs it...I protested...Henning shows it to HHH, whom stepped out and they started laughing at it...Shawn was laid out...Henning imiated Pissing on it...As Shawn saw that and did a Plancha...RIGHT in FRONT of me...He picked up the sign looked at it...Smiled and Rubbed my head. He got back in and Superkicked Hunter for the Win. Henning walked by before they left and Winked at me... and now it's sad to think both those guys are gone forever... Guest bravesfan Report post Posted March 19, 2003 Stolen from another thread: December 14th, 1991. "Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich defeated The Great Kabuki. Superfly Jimmy Snuka defeated "The Model" Rick Martel. Tenryu defeated Haku. Rowdy Roddy Piper defeated Ted Dibiase via disqualification (Sherri inteference). Nasty Boys defeated The Rockers. British Bulldog defeated the Berzerker. LOD defeated Natural Disasters (Tag Title Match) Hulk Hogan defeated Ric Flair via countout. It was a split-card houseshow (with the other show in Boston that night), so the lack of starpower in the undercard is understandable. In a funny note, Bobby Heenan (Flair's advisor at the time) was "arrested" by local police, after he interfered in the "dream" match. Flair went running after him, causing the countout. MY ex girlfriend's aunt was taking her (despite the fact she was barely a wrestling fan, only because of me) and some unknown fellow our age was going as well. My jealousy/overprotectiveness kicked in and I went down to see them, and I remember convertign the mark children into complete smarks. It was on the road to Wrestlemania X-7 in 2001, at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, CA. This was the beginning of the "X-Factor" (anyone remember that stable? Albert, Justin Credible, and X-Pac)These are the matches I remember... Haku vs. Benoit- Noone cared about this match except for me. As a matter of fact, the Anaheim crowd is downright lame. HHH vs. Kane, Big Show came in an interfered allowing HHH to hit the Pedigree for the win. I marked for HHH's entrance, it is cool to see live. STEVE AUSTIN VS KURT ANGLE~!!! Yes, I saw their very first meeting. At least on TV. Major markout moment for the match, and the Rock came down for commentary. Stunenrs for everyone Austin picked up the win. I remember Chris Jericho wrestling somebody but I marked out so much for Y2J I completely forgot who he wrestled. An interesting note- Of all 3 WWE/WWF events I've been to, Kurt Angle has been in every single main event and Chris Benoit has won every match. A smark's dream, indeed.
