How long until......

Recommended Posts

Guest NoCalMike

I am just wondering. So far I have heard NYPD Blue and 24 have gone as far to show cut scenes of 90% of the breast, but always make sure the nips are out of the shot. I am just wondering how long until one of these shows that can "get away with it" just decides, FUCK IT, and shows complete toplessness, and how big of an issue will it be when it happens? I know for all of us, we probably won't make a big deal out of it, but groups like PTC, and all the other strict groups may make a huge beef.

I give it... five years. In a strange twist, I give it twice as long for the big-time profanities to make national TV.

Never, or not as long as there are/could be children watching television at any point, even 3 am because little Johnny was up all night sick or something.

THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

Oh, and if a show had a topless shot or something like it, the FCC would probably fine the Network who would probably do some firing of their own..and the FCC would find out because the millions of old people who have nothing better to do but watch TV all day and write the FCC everytime they see "Smut" on television...

I think they showed a young woman's naked tits on an episode of "Chicago Hope", the whole idea being she had breast cancer, or was getting a mammogram or something, and it wasn't just for the sake of showing them(I don't believe that, either). Possibly the Meredith Baxter-Bierney made-for-tv movie, "My Breast", and I guess I'll have to hand it them there, cause I couldn't see anyone sitting through two-hours of sub-Lifetime schmaltz for a brief glance of Mrs. Keaton's nub with a prosthetic tumor on it.

MTV showed bare breasts on a breast cancer special. I guess if it's not done in a sexual way but an educational one it's ok.

The credits of the movie "Freddy's Dead" feature scenes from the previous movies. One scene is where Freddy's victims are popping out of him after he's killed, and one of those victims is a naked woman whose nipples can be seen through his skin. They didnt blur it out when I say it on UPN or one of those channels, must've gotten past the censors or something.

I think it'll be a while before we get some good nudity on tv. A couple of years ago, while I was in college, during an episode of The Simpsons, there was a 2-3 second clip of what appeared to be a porno movie inserted into the episode. It wasn't an "action" scene or anything, but there was a woman standing there with a very nice set of tits in plain view of the camera.

The uproar from people in the community (mainly those in the Christian community) was VICIOUS. The TV station was bombarded with letters, calls, and, I believe, even received a warning from the FCC. They fired the technician whose watch it happened on, but it was a pretty big news item because of the public's outrage.

I personally had NO problem with it, but I think it will be a long while before it's allowed to show tits on the air, just because so many people will fret and fuss about it.

IIRC, a similar event happened with The Flinstones a few years ago. Somehow porn got spliced in, or was shown instead of the cartoon, or something. Caused a lot of problems.

I'm thinking that t.v. is going to change before we get to the point where networks as we know them will show nudity. T.V. will probably move to a video-on-demand type system where the viewer has the choice of what to watch, which would allow people who didn't want to see mature things avoid them. It's already started, to a degree, in my area with digital cable. As it becomes more widespread the changes should be interesting to watch.

Considering the type of people in power, it amazing they don't still have husband and wife sleeping in seperate beds in sitcoms.

I was under the impression that it was liberals like Joe Lieberman and Tipper Gore that were the biggest proponents of censorship in America.

In Canada basically anything goes, as long as its after about 9 or so at night. All though, you will find porn in the middle of the afternoon on the Quebec airwaves occasionally. Usually it is up to the network to decide whether they want to show it or not. I doubt you would be seeing nudity on the CBC, but most of the other networks will show it.

The Shield does everything but say "fuck" (maybe the season final) and show bare breast WITH nipple.

It's the nipple that hasn't been shown yet, not the breast really.

Yup, anything goes after 9. You can show Osbournes without the bleeping and Sopranos on the basic cable channels.

Actually you will see it occasionally on some of the movies they air. Or at least used to air before they realized showing a second game on Saturday meant more money.

And I think that CTV shows the Sopranos uncut. And of course there's CITY with Ed the Sock, Naked News and Baby Blue 2.

Man, I miss living in Canada...

PBS used to show foreign films late at night on the weekends that featured copious amounts of nudity. I recall numerous showings of the original Swept Away (not that pathetic Madonna remake), and everything was intact, including the profanity in the subtitles.

But since anything filmed outside the U.S. is automatically artsy and credible, I guess it falls under the Moral Majority's radar.

I also remember seeing The Woman in Red on Comedy Central a while ago, and the last scene where Wilder and LeBrock finally get it on showed lots of side shots of LeBrock in the all-together. Very quick pseudo-nipple shots, but they were definitely there. And it was on in the afternoon, if I remember correctly.

When I get older, I am defiently moving to Canada. You guys got all the good stuff, except being made fun of by a lot of people.

Even though all these stations show nudity, why does TSN cut certain shit out of wrestling? Like a women being put through a table?

I'd say by 2015, you can say the word 'fuck' on TV. Just think of the advances we had since 1991. You can do a whole lot more on television since then.

Mariel Hemingway was fully nude on Civil Wars back in 1992, thing is you didn't see much. NBC also left all the full nudity in Schindler's List when they showed it, but again that's non-sexual.

I think it will come down to the nudity fitting the style and tone of the show, something like the Shield, for it to work. It will be way longer before you see full nudity in your standard sitcom.

eh...it's not really that American TV can get away with more now. Well ok from the 70's on American TV was able to get away with more, but I don't think 1991 was the first time they were able to show skin and use certian "words of curse". It's just that the Networks didn't have the balls to push the boundaries concerning skin and "words of curse" until NYPD Blue did it.

Showing real nudity(nipples and genitalia) and the big "word of curse"(fuck) is alot different than showing an ass or the flesh part of tits and saying shit ass and bitch.

But that's not to say that some network won't say "fuck it" and change the rules of American TV forever.

CBC has shown mucho nudity. Their Saturday late night movies (before the Hockey Night In Canada doubleheader debuted) were often arty flicks that had nudity. And I remember the Trivial Pursuit movie they did back in the late eighties had a scene in a strip club. (And this was in prime time.)

It's something about CRTC regulations and how TSN can not show certain things. But it makes no sense since they constantly showed Mcsorely hitting Brashear over and over a few years ago.

Canada's TV isn't perfect though...our original programming isn't that great.

Yeah, I think it's something like that. It also depends on the situation concerning the tabling (is that a word?). For example, there was a hearing or something concerning what I think was the Dudleyz putting Stacy through a table last year. They didn't edit it out on TSN, and I think they ruled it was ok, since the announcers were saying how it wasn't a good thing to do.

TSN's editing out of violence against women is voluntary. They more or less see it as such:

- girl on girl action (or inaction depending on your views on women's wrestling) is ok

- intergender and mixed tag matches are ok

- Dudleys putting a woman through a table, not good

- 3 Minute Warning beating up lesbians, not good

Sometimes they miss things during the live airings. But the 12pmET/9pmPT slot gets edited as a matter of course (since they've got a set 2 hour window there) so stuff like that would be eliminated alltogether. Although in the case of the 3MW incident, it's not a bad thing - the less 3MW the better.

They also frown on necrophilia. They cut the feed as soon as HHH got into the casket.

 you beat me to it

I think the actual reasoning was because of the use of a weapon. You can do some pretty serious damage with a sledgehammer so I guess they didn't want to show that.

I always found that funny back in the day. Back when WWF programming contained actual wrestling, you'd tune in and see all kinds of submission holds, etc. Stuff that could easily break bones when kids emulated it. But as soon as there's a chair shot or any foriegn object, they cut to away.

The general concencus seems to be a matter of when, not if, I'm not so sure about that. With all of society's problems being blamed on tv, we could actually see the censors getting more power and blocking the gains that have been made. Remember, the vocal minority is the one that advertisers pay most attention to.
