TheOriginalOrangeGoblin 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2003 Atlanta booed the Canadian national anthem and no one's bitching about that. Canada disgarees with the war(for the most part including our leader) so we show it. It's not like those morons in Detroit booing Oh Canada for the hell of it. Guest treble charged Report post Posted March 23, 2003 They gave the American anthem a standing ovation in Toronto tonight before the Leafs/Sabres game. Just another reason that Leafs > Habs.

Guest Sandman9000 Report post Posted March 23, 2003 Well, since you're supposed to stand for both anthems, it's not that impressive.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted March 23, 2003 Believe me TC, if none of those instances ever happened, Toronto would boo the anthem as well. Oh and 24>
Guest CanadianChris Report post Posted March 23, 2003 Taped message from Beliveau quiets Montreal crowd -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press MONTREAL -- Montreal Canadiens fans cheered during the final verse of the U.S. national anthem Saturday night following a video address by Hall of Famer Jean Beliveau. In a recorded statement, Beliveau asked the Bell Centre crowd to respect the playing of both national anthems before the game against Carolina. Only a handful of people booed as Charles Prevost-Linton sang ''The Star-Spangled Banner'' in virtual silence before the crowd applauded during the final verse. On Thursday night, a large number of Montreal fans, voicing displeasure with the war in Iraq, booed throughout the anthem before a game against the New York Islanders. Canadiens president Pierre Boivin issued a statement Friday, apologizing on behalf of the organization for the conduct of ''certain fans.'' Saturday, the team asked Beliveau to record statements in French and English, which were played on the arena's video scoreboard before the singing of both anthems. ''During these difficult times, many have an opinion on world affairs,'' Beliveau said. ''Nevertheless, the Montreal Canadiens have been proud to honor both Canada and the United States prior to games for over 50 years, and they hope to maintain this outstanding display of sportsmanship. ''Please, join us here at the Bell Centre in the singing of both national anthems to celebrate the game of hockey. Thank you, and have a good evening.'' Also Saturday night, fans in Toronto cheered during the anthem before the Maple Leafs played Buffalo. That was a classy thing for the organization to do. And did anyone hear John Saunders on The Sports Reporters this morning, defending the Long Island crowd for booing O Canada during last year's Isles/Leafs series because "that was about hockey?" I lost a lot of respect for him after that comment.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted March 23, 2003 I agree Chris. As much as I hate the Habs I will praise for the way they handled the situation
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted March 24, 2003 I wonder if the cheers where genuine or was it because Jean Beliveau told them to respect the American National Anthem.
Guest CanadianChris Report post Posted March 24, 2003 I'm certain it was because of Beliveau. The organization did a good thing; I make no such claim about the Montreal fans.

Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted March 24, 2003 I would have laughed if the american players for Montreal would have just walked onto the ice grabbed the house mic and told the canadians that because of their disrespect the canadians were going to forfit the game. I would be interested to see if the fans would do it again, or are they just cowards you don't believe what they say?
Guest LaParkaMarka Report post Posted March 24, 2003 They would have continued booing.
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted March 24, 2003 Thats fine if they would do it again, just cost Montreal another game. Lets see how long the fans boo when they realize their team won't go to the playoffs.

Firstly, even if any American born players wanted to boycott the game, the whole team certainly wouldn't because... The Canadians, more than likely, would have had to refund everyone's tickets or a riot may ensue. The Canadians need every point they can get and aren't about to give them away just because some fans were voicing their disapproval of the US. I'm sure the team doesn't really want to get dragged into a political fiasco any more than they already are. Besides they have exactly 2 US born players on their roster and neither one is an impact player.

I was at that game. Actually, after a bit, it got annoying, but then I'm the sort that prefers that people either shut up or sing along during the anthem. Guest notJames Report post Posted March 27, 2003 Please don't take what Montreal's fans did as an indication of the rest of great nation of Canada, as Quebec is as Canadian as Anglesault is a Test fan. I say, do like Bugs Bunny; saw off Quebec from the mainland and let it float off into the Atlantic, so those cheese-eating surrender monkeys can speak French and be snooty all by their lonesomes. Guest Some Guy Report post Posted March 27, 2003 I think that most of Canada is pretty respectful of us and most of America is pretty respectful of Canada. Montreal has always been full of assholes. They were booing the American anthem in the playoffs last year, just a few months after 9/11 and the Boston fans, for the most part did not boo the Canadian anthem and we didn't boo it the other day either. I was in Montreal for the games there, and in Boston for the games here, and the main reason that there wasn't boos here was the B's had Billy Guerin make an announcement asking for respect for the CDN anthem. And I think that the reason that the Habs fans booed the US anthem was because of those Canadians that died in a friendly fire accident at US hands, and the fans there felt that justice wasn't swift/severe enough. Maybe he didn't want to get the Dixie Chicks treatment. And it's nice to see that the Oiler fans have forgotten that Pocklington basically sold Gretzky to LA.
