1 Million Thumbtacks?

Recommended Posts

Guest Sandman9000

Over at the czwfans.com board, there is a drive going on, looking to collect one million thumbtacks for a match at Cage of Death 5. Obviously, one million tacks would easily pass the number of tacks used in any match. This is a chance to make wrestling history.

The thread is http://www.czwfans.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=11194. There is a second thread about the idea over at the board as well.

There is also a website for this drive, which can be visited upon clicking the 1 Million thumbtacks pic in my sig.

Ill read the full thread later, but that actually sounds like a good idea to me.

Im not a deathmatch fan, as you may know, but im all for fan interaction :D

What do you think the chances of it actually happening are? And who would you book in the match?

I'm getting one messed up visual myself. You know those ball pits little kids play in? Replace the kids with wrestlers and the balls with thumbtacks and that would be my visual at the moment.

Could they actually use that many tacks though?

I mean think about it. Take 50 takes and spread them out accross the floor. Thats going to take up a large area of ground. Now make it 1,000,000 tacks.

It would be cool to see though. Just to see what 1,000,000 tacks looks like.

You literally couldn't fit one million thumbtacks into a wrestling ring, I don't think. It'd be one huge pile, two or three feet high, and spilling over the sides.

The planners of this are anticipating that the one million tacks would fill two trashcans.

Also, the current plan for the match is to have five beds of 200K tacks each, one in the ring, and four on the outside.

No one is expecting this to be a ***** match, but it's more of the visual, as Nevermortal said, and the fact that, hey, we had a one million thumbtack match.

Though knowing Ian, he'd prob go out and buy two million thumbtacks, just so he could have the crazier deathmatch.

I just like the idea for the way it lets the fans be a part of the show. And a part of wrestling history.

Who would you book in the match? I heard them bouding around the name Balls Mahoney on the site for the tack collection. How come he doesnt work that many indy dates? Does anyone know?

I wonder how much thumbtacks really hurt? When I first heard of this kind of match, I figured, "They guys are dead," but everyone seemed okay, at least as much as you could be having wrestled on thumbtacks.

My friend told me they hurt pretty bad. But I guess it can differ between people. I stitched my arm up with a needle and fishing wire a few months ago after I sliced it open pretty good. It didnt hurt at all but it just matters on how well you can take pain I guess.

The more there are, the less they'd hurt. If you landed on 1-50 tacks it would hurt like a bitch. 1000 at once...it wouldn't hurt as bad since less would stick in on you. Just like a bed of nails. a pit of 1 000 000, if its a foot or more high, wouldn't really hurt that much and would more or less hurt like taking a concrete bump.

You have to figure that these guys A) probably don't feel it as bad with all the adrenaline through their system and B) have suffered through much, much worse.

This is a really fucking dumb idea.

A.) 1 million thumbtacks is approximately 1000x more than the most thumbtacks ever used in a match. The ring will be FLOODED with them; it would be impossible to wrestle in it.

B.) All it takes is one to puncture an artery, and with one million you are increasing that chance to an insanely exponential degree.

C.) The match will suck.

D.) If you want to support CZW- buy tickets, tapes and merchandise, and spread the word on message boards. Don't give them fucking tacks- hell, just give cash right to Zandig.

I like this idea. It will be an awesome visual and unless someone gets a tack in the eye or penis there really shouldn't be any significant injuries.

But can you GUARANTEE that won't happen? Bad bad idea.

I love CZW, it's my favorite indy promotion, but some of it's fans, particularly on that message board, are major dipshits.

If you love CZW that much, how come you are so concerned for the safety of the talent.

Theres nothing worng with being safe, but how can you criticize a 1m tack match for dangerous, if you have wathched countless deathmatches before. SUrely landing on tacks is no more deangerous than landing on a flaming table, or fallinf off the COD?

First off, this match has never been done before, NO ONE knows the risks of it.

Regarding deathmatches...

I don't enjoy them. I don't own Zandig's Tournament of Death and have no desire to see it. Despite draping themselves in that image, CZW has not been a "deathmatch" company since late 2000/early 2001, when they had to rely on losers like Mad Man Pondo and TCK and BJPW idiots like Yamakawa.

Also, let's see how CZW's deathmatch workers are faring today.

Lobo- retired at 25 because his body is broken beyond repair.

Wifebeater- retired, also because his body is broken beyond repair.

Zandig- only wrestles once every 4-5 shows because even he knows he doesn't have much left.

Only Nick Mondo is still active and can still "go," but even he said he has maybe a year left if he keeps up his ultraviolent pace. So pardon me if I show concern for the roster, and I want them to still be around for my entertainment, and lordy, actually want them to live healthy and productive lives outside of wrestling.

I'm a fan of CZW because they are one of the best wrestling companies, for junior and hardcore (NOT Ultraviolent) wrestling on Earth. Deathmatches are what I sit through to get to the good stuff.

Definition of hardcore- tables, chairs, ladders, occassional use of thumbtacks, these matches are great when structured well, and fit in the context of the match (ex. Messiah/Pain and Messiah/Mondo, and most of the H8 Clubs matches), and (with the exception of tacks) are a hell of a lot safer than deathmatches.

I understand and respect the fact that some fans enjoy deathmatches, and I support guys like Necro Butcher coming in because they have a fanbase and thus are a benefit to CZW. I respect deathmatch workers because they literally put everything on the line for the fans' enjoyment, and they are genuinely good guys. But that doesn't mean I have to like this aspect of the product, and the compassionate human side of me (the small part that still exists at least) says 1 million thumbtacks for 1 match is a VERY BAD idea, and could land CZW, my favorite company, in VERY DEEP SHIT.

Fair enough, I understand your arguement. IF you simply watch CZW for the non ultraviolent bits, then I can see why you would be against a 1m tack match.

Its just that on the face of things, you seemed to be contradicting yourself.

I, wrongfully, assumed that if CZW is your favourite promotion, then you would be a fan of ultraviolence. I dont think that that is such an unlikley assumption, as CZW is renowned for its ultraviolence. However, when you make yourself clear about why your a CZW fan, then I can see why you would be against the tack match.

To be honest, I think I have a similar view to you. Im not a deathmatch fan at all, and I also tend to enjoy the junior heavyweight parts of CZW shows far more than the ultraviolent, and even to some extent main event, parts.

Hey man, it's alright, it's a perfectly valid assumption.

Light tubes and barbed wire are fine, when used in moderation, but CZW has pushed the envelope so much with 200 tube and Fans Bring the Weapons and No-Rope Barbed Wire w/boards and beds of nails matches that the fans have turned into vampires worse than anything ECW produced.

(Edit: Also, too much garbage hurts the match itself- I mean, how believable is it when Wifebeater and Mondo fight through 50 tube shots and it takes a weedwhacker to put Mondo down. It's a variation of YNA's complaint about indy cruisers- how can you believe that a brainbuster is a match ender when dozens of light tube shots are no-sold?)

I always feel bad when a guy like Mondo, who is such an excellent all-rounder with cool offense, a great character and loads of potential, is thrown to the vampires and with with every walk through hell gets his career cut short.

I also fear that 1 million tacks is a bush league stunt that may come back to haunt CZW in the future and prevent expansion, even if everybody comes out unharmed. Remember when the Raven crucifixion delayed ECW PPV for a year?

The planned one million thumbtack match and the ECW crucifxion angle are of a completely different nature. ECW tried messing around with religious symbols, and it came back to bite them in the ass. The one million thumbtack match shouldn't be offense to anyone except deathmatch haters and puro marks. It's more for the "holy shit, a million thumbtacks!" reaction that people get when they hear of it. I'm fairly certain that seeing the 1 Million Thumbtacks header has gotten people's attention and curiosity. Also, the one million thumbtacks match is an idea from the fans, not CZW. There is no guarantee that CZW will even run the match if the one million tacks are collected. However, if the goal is obtained, and I plan on contributing to it, we figure that CZW will most likely give into fan demands.

Also, IMO, I'd rather land in a bed of thumbtacks then take a crazy bump off of a high object. Is there a risk of having a tack puncture an artery or poke out an eye? Of course, but the danger is what makes a deathmatch special. But to me, thumbtacks are a lot safer then using barbed wire or glass or falls from high places. Do thumbtacks hurt? Of course they do. But tacks aren't going to cause the wounds and bloodloss that barbed wire and lightbulbs will. No one is expecting this match to be a five star classic. It's more for the novelty, for CZW and their fans to show support for one another.

I cant disagree with that. Good point.

Also, something that no one has mentioned, can you imagine the pressure that will be on the two guys that work the match (if they go ahead with it)? Not only will they know that people have paid to see them, but they will know that hundreds or maybe even thousands have bought and sent in tacks to make the match. Im not saying that they wont be used to pressure, of course they will. But this added pressure could lead them to take it a new level and with 1m tacks, that could be dangerous? Just a point.

No one is expecting this match to be a five star classic. It's more for the novelty, for CZW and their fans to show support for one another.

That is what initially appealed to me as well, but like someone else pointed out, you cant support CZW by buying tickets, merchandise and tapes.

1 000 000 tacks isn't really that bad. As someone who has been dropped though a table covered in tacks I can safely say that the amount of tacks you fall on isn't really a big deal because not a whole lot of them can pierce the skin at once. Sure whoever takes the bump with get a shitload stuck in their back but probably no more than when Foley did it during Hell In A Cell.

It probably wouldnt end up with a single bump onto the tacks though, would it?

If your bumping 5 or 6 times onto a bed of tacks, theres a good chance you're going to do you self some serious damage.

It just does not seem safe that the fans are allowed to bring the tacks. There are some sick people out there that might put some bad things on the end of the tacks.

The person who is collecting all of the tacks is going to boil them and put them in rubbing alcohol to sterilize the tacks, in the event that someone does something bad to the tacks.

Not really though because a thumbtack puncture wound is not very deep and while it may hurt a little it can't do much damage.

Think of it like this. If a single bump gives you a 1/1000 chance of punchering a serious artery, then 2 bumps surely give you a 1/1000 + 1/1000 and so on.

Basically, all I meant is the more bumps you take onto the takes the more at risk you are.
