It's too bad that Clinton couldn't have served another term in office. Gas prices wouldn't be at a ridiculous high, and at least there would be some peace in the world instead of the US and the UK sending their armed forces off to die un-necessary deaths in friendly fire and helicopter accidents.

Gas prices are coming down. Crude oil is down over $8 a barrel in the last few months, and that’s with the escalating tensions in Iraq. As for peace in the world, I’m sure Clinton wouldn’t have launched strikes at anyone unless he were about to be impeached for porking another chubby intern. Seriously, I don’t think Clinton would have handled September 11th much differently. I’ll mock him for his eve-of-impeachment strikes in 1998, but I’m confident that he would have gone after Usama and Saddam.

 

Anyway I'm done on this conversation.

I didn't fish through the whole thread, but did someone in their right mind suggest Gas prices are now coming down.....what in the holy hell are they talking about? Unless not going up by .05 a day means, "coming down" then they sure as hell aren't coming down out here in CA.

They're coming down where I live, to the tune of $0.10-0.15 per gallon. Crude oil prices have been falling for months, so it's not like the prices can't be lowered. Stations that haven't lowered their prices either bought a lot at the old prices, or (more likely) want to gouge the consumers at the pump.

Haven't come down in Seattle and about to top out around $2.00. Though for some reason in Elma they have gas at one station for $1.39 and everything else in the $1.80 range.

Arguing the US is the #1 best place in the world no questions asked and arguing that it's worse than Mexico are both equally dumb statements. Realistically, the USA is in a class of countries (USA, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, Denmark, etc.) that all have comparable quality of life levels, each with some unique advantages and disadvantages that make it hard to say any is clearly ahead of the others. As a Canadian I will say one thing though: Americans get raped up the ass in general for your internet access, and having been to Europe it's even worse. I don't know how we have it so cheap up here, but it's nice to pay 2/3rds of the equivalent US service.

I like the USA, but there are too many strikes against it for me to consider it the best country - the constant advertising, particularly on TV and your endlessly baffling rejection of football or "soccer" as you like to call it would drive me to dribbling insanity in the end. I need my British quirks, but my problem with living in Britain is that I can't stand roughly three quarters of the country. Ireland is great (and economically pissing over the rest of Europe at the moment, strangely enough), but it just rains too much. Mainland Europe tends to contain too much naffness and really shitty music, despite all the obvious perks. I'll tell you what is awesome about the US though - gross over-consumption. American breakfasts are a thing of joy.

One of the things I liked the most about America when I visited was how great the service was at almost every place my family visited. People seemed happy to answer any questions, give advice and just be accomodating in a freindly and unfussy manner. Americans must go to a customer service training school or something that doesn't exist anywhere in Europe. The other good stuff was the enormous portions of food, I can easily see why there's such a big many obesity problem over there.

 

I don't think most people in the world who are fortunate to live in a 'decently' (vague term I know: For sake of argument, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand etc, etc) advanced economic/westernized society would want to live anywhere else other than the place of their birth. The vast majority of people living in these kind of places would never consider swapping their own culture for a foreign one? And why would they?

 

Personally I simply couldn't live anywhere else because I would just miss the British character and sense of humour too much. America is definately out because I would have to watch American sport.

The reality is that the world is getting tired of all the USA crap but no one is in any place to do anything about it because the United States is too much of a powerful force full of hypocrites refusing to live by the strength of their of convictions.
