How'd you get into puroresu?

Recommended Posts

Guest wildpegasus

So what drew you into puroresu? Before the internet days it was hard to see any.

For me it was the WCW-New Japan patership. WCW would occasionly show a Japan match on tv and it would just always surpass WCW's product. The matchups that initially drew me in were Steiners vs Hase/Sasaki, Liger vs Benoit, Liger vs Nogami, Chono vs Muta from the G-1 Climax 91, Sting vs Muta, Sasaki vs Rude and Flair vs Fujinami. The back pages from PWI also got me interested in the overseas product. The style just hit me as a lot more realistic which I loved.

Same thing for me. Muta was so great in his WCW runs up to a certain point that it made me want to venture out to Japan and find some more stuff. Sadly, that stuff was really hard to come by since I was so young and stuff. Them showing Muta/Chono in practically their entirities helped out a little bit...

I really enjoyed Abdullah The Butcher. He drew me into it all.

Got me a Misawa-Kawada Triple Crown History tape and I was hooked from there. I saw the stuff WCW would do with New Japan way back when but it still didn't turn me on to puro as a whole really at that point.

I guess it was just being on the internet and hearing about this mythical thing called Puro. So I got some.....and it rocked.

Don't worry Tim, you're NOT that bad of a guy. I wouldn't call you a waste of space.

Banky, just trying to joke around in the Puro folder but drawing the ire of its inhabitants.

Banky, you're trolling. It's what you do. It's a bit late to try dressing it up as something else.

Doesn't anyone realize that the easiest way to draw the ire of the Puroresu folder is to ask "What are some good matches to get?" I mean, duh.

As for what got me interested, it was one of the writers for IGN wrestling, way back when. Don't remember what the guy's name was, but he would talk about Japanese wrestling sometimes and put it over as superior to the American product. I got intrigued, got some tapes, and that was that.

I saw a Liger match which in retrospect, not being as awesome as some of his other great matches, was simply beautiful to watch compared to the North American product.

I love the attention to detail in the puro matches.

Yup, it was the internet that did it for me as well. I came into the puroresu folder of the old smarks board actually, got reading there, looked at some tape buying sites and bought the J Cups.

I think it was the M Pro 6-man from Barely Legal 97 that actually first got me interested though.

WCW was seriously into its all bullshit stage and I remembered something about how all the really good WCW wrestlers (Benoit, Eddie, Malenko, Jericho,) used to wrestle in Japan, so I got some tapes and the rest is history.

I don't ALWAYS troll. Be fair. And I honestly did it to get a reaction out of people. It was light-hearted fun. And I'll stop now, before Jubs comes in. He's mean.

Banky, I'm not talking about your decisions in the other folders. For all I know, you could be beloved contributor to the other sections of this board. Here, however, when you're around, you're trolling.

You did it to create a response, but it was obviously meant to be a negative one, and only for your amusement. That's trolling, bud.

Ricky, if you're pulling posts, why aren't you pulling his?

Because he's harmless. If Banky was actually effective in his cheep heat tactics and was disrupting things around here, I would take notice and put a stop to it.

He draws the occasional suck heat from you and Tim, but otherwise his reaction is apathetic. I also assumed that those who bother punting him around *points at Jubuki* do so for fun. If I'm wrong about that, by all means, shoot me a PM and I'll try and work things out.

I remember seeing a Benoit/Liger match on WCW Saturday Night on TBS

that was from Japan and I was captivated. Jim Ross was on commentary.

Neither Benoit or Liger had actually wrestled for WCW at that point. I

think they were showing footage of Liger to promote his eventual matches

with Pillman.

Back in the old days of RSPW, when there was only text on the internet and

no pretty pictures, Dave "1wrestling.com" Scherer would put together comp tapes.

These were the first tapes with Japanese matches that me and many others

purchased.

I don't punt him for fun; I punt him because he should go away.

And to answer the question this whole thread started off with, I think I'll C&P something I was going to put up on my site at the end of '02 but didn't really get a chance to finish off. Ought to draw some agreements from some folks...

"A special thank you goes out to Scott Keith; without his praise of the WrestleWar Flair/Steamboat match, I would have never tracked down the match (nor would I have begun buying tapes at all). Once I saw it, I soon thought, "What the Hell? This is boring me to death; is he some sort of fucking retard?", thus leading me to question the opinion of everyone I've ever run into. I owe you one for that, Scott - we ALL owe you one.

On a similar note, I have to thank Ben Miller – without the helpful match dates and names he provided in his Wrestleline “Best of 1999” column, it would have taken me another 6-12 months to finally dig into the Japanese scene. Granted, you’re a putz for thinking the Burning vs. Untouchables matches were all that good, and you’ve done next to nothing since then to convince anyone outside of Dave Meltzer that you’re anything but a putz, but apparently even putzes can be put to some good use. Thanks for getting me started on the path of making up for boneheads like you, Ben!"

Saw some clips of AJ on the net.

After being offered a free tape during a trade, I picked up a noah show from 23-12-00 I think with vader-misawa and kobashi-akiyama which kicked all sorts of ass.

Been a fan of kobashi ever since.

WCW / New Japan Supershow III

They offered it in early 1993 for something like 10 bucks on PPV. I figured, hey, the price is right, why not go for it.

It hooked me. I remember that the Ultimo Dragon / Lyger match for the junior title was lightyears more exciting than anything I had seen previously to it.

WCW always clipped theose shows all to hell, I have the complete version and while Lyger/Dragon is a bit disapointing compared to their later matches, it still smokes anything WCW contributed to the show.
