A Man Apart: Is it really as bad as I hear...

First off, I f'n HATE Vin Diesel. I can't stand his persona, look, voice, acting, or anything else having to do with him. He is, simply put, my least favorite actor at this point of time. Now, with that said, lol. I was just researching films, and I came across the reviews for his new film, A Man Apart, and I found that almost all of them are totally bashing this film. I Didn't expect this film to be great, as I've disliked his previous films, but still, I didn't think it would get hated on THIS much. Over at Rotten Tomatoes, the "overall" rating out of 100% is at 6% (with 54 reviews counted), and the "cream of the crop" is at 0%. Just check them out, the movie is being totally put down.

Have any of you seen it yet? I'm sure most haven't, but once you do (if you do), let me know what you think of it. I really have to see what others think about this one, after reading all of this, heh.

Sincerely,

...Downhome...

I'll be going to see it tonight. I like Diesel for what he is (A B Movie Action Hero, though he had a good supporting role in the drama Boiler Room a few years back). Apparently, like Knockaround Guys, this was made a while back (about a year ago) and sat on the shelf since Fast and The Furious was just coming out. Now that Vin's a big star, they're making more money off his name.

I think it'll be good, but my taste varies greatly from many of you on the board.

And just FYI...Phone Booth, which looks really good, got a * star review in my local paper. A Man Apart got **. Figure that one out.

I like Diesel, but I'll wait for DVD to see this one. Hell, I've skipped better movies this year.

Like C.H.U.D. I'm a fan of Diesel, but I won't see this in theaters. I'll wait for it on DVD like i did with Knockaround Guys.

Send all complaints to the Providence Journal Bulletin, Providence, RI. :)

Any paper with TWO names isn't credible...

Either be the Provodince Journal or Provo Bulletin...

Can't have best of both worlds Pal...

I like Diesel a lot but I have no intention of seeing this either. It was shelved for 2 years. I have a friend that saw it a year ago before they did the recent reshoots and he liked it, but he likes a lot of gay shit. After seeing the trailers I have no reason to see it, it doesn't look interesting at all, it doesn't look like a movie worth the 2 year hassle to get it out. It looks terrible. One of the most boring trailers I've ever seen. Seeing as how trailers generally show the entire movie these days, well...you know.

And there's your reason to avoid it. Movies are generally shelved or sent direct-to-video for a reason.

I don't really like Vin Diesel either, although he was very good in Boiler Room, but this movie actually looks like it has a decent story. It can't be THAT bad. I mean, really.

Lorenzo Tate is in the movie so it can't be that good....but A MAN APART can't be any worst than XXX.

For some reason, this movie reminds me of Maxx Payne for PS2.

There are a lot of movies worse than XXX. I'm sure this one could make it.

For Dames to say that his taste varies greatly from many of those on this board would be implying that he actually HAS taste, which he does not.

And to say that Larenz (not LORENZO) Tate is in it so it must automatically be bad is crazy. Tate's 10x the actor Diesel is (which isn't hard to be) and he's been in his share of decent, good and very good movies. Menace II Society, Dead Presidents and Love Jones are just a few examples.

I wish Vin Diesel would just be a suporting actor, I might be able to end up enjoying him if he did that.

I am pretty sure I heard this film was actually made right after Pitch Black.

Well, one of my local newspapers in NYC, the Daily News gave it 1 * (Phone Booth recieved 2 **'s). I don't really pay much attention to the critics.

I see what interests me, and this does. I'll catch it tomorrow morning along with Phone Booth.

Yeah...Look at them...Vin Gotten a Little Buffer since then...

How many of these did he make prior to F.F?

I'm not feeling the Diesel hate, and I'm not really understanding it either. I accept Vin for what he is - the next generation of action movie star, now that the old guard (Arnold, Sly, Jean-Claude) is too old / career is too in shambles to continue.

I'm not going to pay to see this, though, because I've discovered you can find everything you want on this little invention called the internet.

If you'll excuse me, I'll go fire up my Windows Media Player and watch my copy of Daredevil.

Lorenzo? lol. Its Larenz Tate and he's not a bad actor, he has pretty good roles, like Inkwell, Menace II Society, Love Jones, Dead Presidents, Franky Lymon story, and he did a couple episodes of "Family Matters." Saying he's a bad actor is a little bit too much. As for the movie itself I doubt go to the theatres for this one.

Lawrence Tate (intentional) was good in Menace II Society, but that's all I'll give him.

I downloaded Daredevil a couple days before it came out, by the way.

Everytime I see a trailer for A.M.A. I always wish they would give The Punisher it's plotline back.

Hey man... Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD is cool!

Anyway, if movies weren't all that expensive, I'd give this one a shot in the theatres. I don't expect it to be very good in the traditional sense, however I expect it to be at least watchable and enjoyable in a theatre. Seriously, I loved xXx when I saw it opening weekend, but recently caught it on video and it bites the big one without the "larger than life" theatre persona to mask its flaws. But then, aren't most action movies, and it seems particularly most modern action movies, like that anyway?

Maybe this film is just the Vin Diesal 'backlash' film where everybody brings him down a peg or two. Remember when Jim Carrey's 'The Cable Guy' got a really hostile reception? It seems that sometimes when a new breakout star has a couple of good hits some critics go out of their way to really trash one of their next films in an over the top manner. The Cable Guy wasn't a great film by any means IMO but the slew of one star reviews by critics whose 'reviews' consisted of saying how much they personally disliked Carrey seemed ridiculous.

The critic from my local paper gave Gangs Of New York' a one star review and gave Exit Wounds four stars. You can literally predict what films he's going to rate and which he is not. He's started off reviews more than once with comments like ''I don't like these type of films at all'' etc. I thought a good critic should have a moderately wide ranging and objective approach to fairly judging all types of different films and be able to give an insightful argument as to why they don't rate a film. I guess that's asking way too much from a local paper in the first place though.
