Finally got my copy of the new White Stripes album today, and for the first time in a while, I agree more with the Rolling Stone take than the Pitchfork review. I've only given it two full listens so far, but I'm loving it like a 15-year old hooker. Particularly moments of joy include the glory that is "Seven Nation Army," the playful gospelled-up explosiveness and careful self-reference to "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" on "There's No Home For You Here," and the Meg White vocal on "In The Cold Cold Night."

 

So, yeah. My take is that it's kinda awesome. It doesn't feel quite as varied as White Blood Cells, but it's still awfully great. Thoughts?

the Stripes were like one of those bands that i wanted to not like cause of all the attmpted false hype as "the next big thing". And then i didnt think they could top white Bood Cells, but 7 nation army is just a rock masterpiece

 

i need to get this when i have the $$$

It's good, Elephant, but I don't love it. There's some solid rockin'--I'm particularly fond of "Ball and Biscuit" and "Seven Nation Army"--but there's too many dull moments (most of the first-half floats by in a very unengaging manner, and the album-closing, overly cute "Well It's True That We Love One Another" should've been left as a b-side). Overall, the album's better than the s/t debut, but it doesn't hold a candle to De Stijl or White Blood Cells.

I've been hearing nothing but good reviews from everyone that's heard it. So, I think I'll pick that sucka-herb-punk up.

 

 

And De Stijl kicks ass. "Why can't you be nicer to Me?" is my favorite track off of it.

Elephant is justice and rule so far. Seven Nation Army rocks, and the aforementioned Meg White vocal is quite nice. More detailed thoughts once I'm done with my Pavement binge.

Elephant is really quite fucking awesome. I knew the Stripes would have staying power. I'm still trying to figure out how they're going to be playing those songs live, though. Does Jack have an extra-funky guitar or something? I agree that the last song is a little self indulgent, but the rest is fantastic, with 7 Nation Army being my personal favourite.

Hey! Dr. Teeth had Floyd and Janice switching off at Bass and rhythm guitair I believe. I have a best of the Muppets Show tape with Floyd on the bass with some Jazz singer singing "When the Saints Go Marching In"

I got Elephant for my trip to Japan. I think I've listened to it about seventy times by now. It was in my discman for about a week, and I listened to it when I woke up and went to sleep among other times. It fucking owns. I'm especially liking Black Math, The Air Near My Fingers, and Hypnotize. It's sweet, baby.
