SPLIT PPV's - will it work?

Recommended Posts

Guest nikowwf

I was thinking about the idea of split ppv's. There are some creative things the WWE could do, but they won't so I'm not even going to think about it. Let's say the buildup for this month had to lead to 2 PPV's. This is what I see...two 8 match PPV's. Im not going to do stips or anything wild, just where they seem to be headed if everything needed to be on PPV.

RAW

I have to break up the big tag match cause I need peeps for other matches.

-Goldberg vs. Rock

-HHH & Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels & Kevin Nash

-Booker T vs. Ric Flair

-RVD & Kane vs. Dudleyz - World Tag Titles

-Scott Steiner vs. Chris Nowinski

-Trish Stratus vs. Jazz - Women's Titles

-Test vs. Goldust

You could do Hurricane & Jeff Hardy vs. Storm & Morley, or some variation of singles matches with them...

SMACKDOWN

-Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena - WWE Title

-Team Angle vs. Los Guerreros - Tag Title

-Rey Mysterio vs. Matt Hardy - Cruiserweight Title

-Chris Benoit vs. Rhyno

-Undertaker vs. Some Combination of FBI (i guess)

-Nathan Jones vs. Big Show or A-Train (scary)

-Brian Kendrick & Tajiri vs. Jamie Noble & Kidman (im reaching now, I know)

-Rikishi vs. Sean O-Haire

You could stack a smackdown show with cruiser matches, or you could use the hosses. I'd know which I'd like, and I know what the WWE will do unfortunately.

What do you think? Could this work? These are kind of blah shows...not bad by any means, but not killer kick ass shows.

I would rather see a Smackdown only PPV than a split PPV with Nash, Goldberg, HHH & HBK taking all the time and never jobbing except to each other.

Me too, IF the smackdown ppv was a cool show with lots of cruiser matches, eddy & benoit running wild, etc. But smackdown has potential to be hossamania with taker, albert, jones (my god), etc.

If RVD and Jericho were on SmackDown, I can't even imagine how this could work, workrate wise.

The casual fans will like the Raw PPVs because it has the "big names" like Trips and Goldberg. The problem there is that most casual fans are casual because they don't order PPVs.

I think for the workrate fan PPV buyers, Jericho will save the Raw PPVs. It becomes "You want to see a ****+ Chris Jericho match? Order the Raw Brand PPV!".

In theory, doing split PPVs should work out as the shows will need to have more angles to push more matches (from about 4 to about 8), but that remains to be seen.

Assuming the following PPV line up:

JANUARY -- Royal Rumble

FEBRUARY -- No Way Out -- Smackdown

MARCH -- Wrestlemania

APRIL -- Backlash -- Raw

MAY -- Judgement Day -- Smackdown

JUNE -- Bad Blood -- Raw

JULY -- Vengeance -- Smackdown

AUGUST -- Summerslam

SEPTEMBER -- Unforgiven -- Raw

OCTOBER -- No Mercy -- Smackdown

NOVEMBER -- Survivor Series

DECEMBER -- Armageddon -- Raw

After Bad Blood, the Raw brand has:

two months build up for Summerslam

one for build up for Unforgiven

two for build up for Survivor Series

one for build up for Armageddon

one for build up for RR

two for build up for WM

one for build up for Backlash

two for build up for Bad Blood

That's a YEAR before they have two months to build for a brand-exclusive PPV.

So instead of building for one month for half a PPV, as they are doing now, they will be building for just as long for a FULL PPV.

Good luck to them...

I won't be watching the RAW PPVs anyways.

Smackdown will have two months for Vengeance.

One month for Summerslam.

Two months for No Mercy.

One month for Survivor Series.

Two months for Royal Rumble (Where it helps to have more time to build up possible winners for the Rumble match).

One month for No Way Out.

One month for Wrestlemania.

Two months for Judgement Day.

And then the cycle repeats. With the exception of No Way Out, Smackdown really benefits from this.

RAW

Goldberg vs The Rock

HHH, Jericho and Flair vs HBK, Nash and Booker T

RVD/Kane vs Dudley Boyz(Tag Titles)

Jazz/Mack vs Richards/Victoria vs Jeff/Trish

Steiner vs Nowinski

The Hurricane vs Lance Storm

SMACKDOWN

Lesnar vs Cena(HV Title)

Team Angle vs Funaki/Tajiri(Tag Titles)

F.B.I vs Taker/Jones

Rikishi vs Sean O'Haire

Benoit/Rhyno vs A-Train/Show

Matt Hardy vs Brian Kendrick(Crusier Title)

You wouldn't need 8 matches if you were to either cut the Brand PPV's down slightly and/or increase the match length. Add some segments in a bit to kill some time. Hell there could definatly be more matches by the tim the brand PPV's come around, but this is just going by right now.

If you needed to add matches, there's always Maven/Snow/someone vs 3MW for Raw, and loads of Smackdown cruisers, possibly a battle royal or something. Mysterio, Guerreros, Kidman, Noble...it could definately work. Plus with the slower build ups, we'd hopefully get more HBK/Y2J length feuds, built over months rather than weeks

Two hour Pay Per Views )for the brand exclusive ones) would probably help but not will most likely never happen.

Both brands would probably be best off booking most main event/upper mid card feuds for three months. Its just common sense so they don't start running through feuds any faster then they've been doing since one of the benefits of the split PPV's is supposed to be that storylines were till take time to play out now. This goes for RAW especially since they only have a month before the "big shows". I can easily see them having two month-long feuds for their own PPV that are completely played out once the PPV comes around. They they either have to put a stale match on at the joint PPV or quickly rush and point a match with one-month build on a major show. Either one isn't good. They really need to think it out in advance so they have plenty of new stuff left over to get the angle trough a third month.

It'll be really interesting to see how much, if it all, the writers can adjust to this because they will have to adjust a lot. I tend to doubt that is something the WWE really considered when they came up with this idea. They are going to have to do two months build up for a blow off match in some situations. That means a LOT more has to go into each storyline to keep it fresh and keep it moving on television. I think that is going to be their biggest challenge, even more so then finding eight good matches for each PPV.

Right now they can go with a pretty simple formula. Week One, the two wrestlers have first confrontation. Weeks two and three they have some sort of altercation (interviews, run ins, skit, some match involving the two wrestlers, ect.). Then the big push hits Week Four with either a big tag match to set up the PPV match or a big interview/brawl. Now they have to extend that to eight weeks meaning a lot more needs to go in the middle.

Of course, they may just end up waiting about three or four weeks before starting storylines for the PPV's, but that kind of deletes one of the big pros of having split-PPV's.

Stating the obvious, I don't think they have really thought this all through....

The split PPV might work if they have Vince retire and give the company to Shane and Stephanie. Them Shane and his wife Marissa can have a public feud with Stephanie and Trips over the direction of the company and split the WWE into 2 separate organizations, thus adding credibility to the "brand split."

Or not.

Yes there's no doubt that it CAN work.

Raw needs to build up their lower and mid carders for their PPVs to be any good outside of the big name matches.

Smackdown would have no problem at all putting on a PPV. If they are short on matches all they have to is toss some cruisers into a match and it'll be entertaining even without a buildup.

People, people its gonna be easy to fill Raw PPV time. They'll just have a 2 out of the 3 Falls Iron Man Match (Three 60 minute matches) between HHH and Big Daddy Dye Job. Its GENIUS I tells ya!

Well if they can have the build up to the PPVs have credible angles and story lines then it could work but if they continue to just throw random matches at the last minute as they usually do then this will not work out.

Out of the Raw show all I want to see is Rock vs Goldberg and the womens match. There is great potential in Stevie Richards and Goldust, if anything good happens during this split PPV crap, I would like them look good in the process. No more Heat matches before the PPV damn it.

A three out of four quads match would be fun indeed...

There would have to be a nap booked for Nash in the middle of an Iron Man match for him to make it through it.

I think it can work. I mean, the wrestlers are there, they just do not use them. If it means people getting more airtime and less filler on the shows, then I am all for it.

Well Raw can have a decent/good lower and midcard if they try.

They already have RVD, Goldust and Hurricane that would be easy to get mega over. Jeff Hardy, Dudleys, Christian and Kane are always semi over.

With some work put forth by the writers they could turn the following into something good...

Al Snow(is he still active?), Chief Morley, Chris Nowinski, Lance Storm, Randy Orton, Rico(let him be a singles wrestler damnit), William Regal, Spike Dudley, Stevie Richards, Tommy Dreamer

Yeah you still have the "but most of the matches will suck" problem, but they could still make it entertaining.

i guess my main issue is ive come to accept the way wwe books, and i cant see them booking the shows intelligently enough to fill brand seperate ppv's. i think a lot of you peeps could book an entertaining undercard feud with hurricane, but i dont see brian gertwit doing it...

Yeah exactly...

In theory the PPV split would work very well. However, in WWe reality it won't work with the current writing mindset.

I could book two strong shows given I can engage the talent, but with the current crop of writers and the character development, right now would be pretty bad. Works really well in theory.
