Guest godthedog Report post Posted April 11, 2003 i always thought it was odd that i'd never seen michaels do the kip-up before 1996, but i was watching some of his old stuff & came up with a hypothesis. the earliest match i've seen him do a kip-up in was at the february 96 IYH against owen hart. owen used to do a kip-up on occasion (first example that comes into my head is summerslam 94), & if this was the first match he used it in, it looks like it started off as a little in-character insult to owen, and just took off from there. anyone who's seen a kip-up earlier and/or a competing theory, i'd like to hear. Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted April 11, 2003 Why is it called a 'kip-up?' I always thought it was because JR slurred 'kick up' so bad that people thought he was saying 'kip-up' and that name stuck.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted April 11, 2003 didn't he abandon it as soon as he became a singles wrestler though?

I always thought it was because JR slurred 'kick up' so bad that people thought he was saying 'kip-up' and that name stuck. JR calls it a nip-up and usually blows a fat load when doing so. Guest BAR Report post Posted April 12, 2003 Dynamite did it until he was unable to in the late 80's. He called it a nip-up.
Guest Downhome Report post Posted April 12, 2003 I've seen the kip-up for as long as I've been watching Pro. Wrestling, and then many years before that on old tapes. It's nothing new at all. Wasn't it done in old martial arts movies also? Or do you mean JUST in Pro. Wrestling?
Guest godthedog Report post Posted April 12, 2003 Dynamite did it until he was unable to in the late 80's. He called it a nip-up. good thing it changed somewhere along the way to kip-up, cause the other way sounds like his nipples are hardening.

Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2003 I always used to call it a Chinese Ghettup, and still do. Fuck whatever the hell they call it in wrestling these days. It's probably come somewhere from Kung-Fu movies. I *highly* doubt that it originated in Pro Wrestling.
