Guest Kinetic Report post Posted April 14, 2003 The idea here is to have a tournament not unlike the Miss Smart Marks thing, but with bands and solo musicians taking the place of nubile young actresses and models. In compiling the list of eligible artists, I took a lot of things into consideration, such as popularity, longevity, importance, relevance, etc. Some of your favorite artists have been left out; mine, too. It's just a necessity based on time and space, you understand. Also, The Beatles are not included in this tournament. We did this once before at the EZBoard forum and, lamely and predictably, The Beatles won. I can't have that. Three members of the band are included in this tournament, but a vote for them should be based on solo material alone. And, please, I implore you: Vote for what you actually like better, as opposed to what you think you should like better. So, in no particular order: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Patti Smith Metallica Creedence Clearwater Revival Smashing Pumpkins Van Halen Paul Simon Pink Floyd Janis Joplin Pink Floyd R.E.M. The Doors Radiohead Megadeth U2 The Grateful Dead The Police Ozzy Osbourne Pixies Black Sabbath Stevie Wonder Pearl Jam Nirvana George Harrison Santana Paul McCartney/Wings Chicago John Lennon Elvis Costello Sonic Youth Talking Heads The Smiths Aerosmith The Sex Pistols The Clash Lynyrd Skynyrd Prince Led Zeppelin David Bowie AC/DC Beck KISS The Beach Boys Guns N Roses Cat Stevens Buddy Holly Elvis Presley The Velvet Underground The Kinks Madonna The Rolling Stones Michael Jackson Elton John The Who Neil Young Billy Joel Jimi Hendrix Bruce Springsteen Bob Dylan Phil Collins

The Doors Radiohead Megadeth U2 The Grateful Dead (I'm gonna need a bath) The Police Ozzy Osbourne Pixies Black Sabbath Stevie Wonder Pearl Jam Nirvana George Harrison Santana Paul McCartney/Wings Chicago John Lennon (I really don't have much basis here) Elvis Costello Sonic Youth Talking Heads The Smiths Aerosmith The Sex Pistols The Clash (This one was tougher than one might guess) Lynyrd Skynyrd Prince Led Zeppelin David Bowie AC/DC Beck KISS The Beach Boys Guns N Roses Cat Stevens Buddy Holly Elvis Presley The Velvet Underground The Kinks Madonna The Rolling Stones Michael Jackson Elton John The Who Neil Young Billy Joel Jimi Hendrix Bruce Springsteen Bob Dylan Phil Collins
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted April 14, 2003 Woo hoo, something new I can be negative about! ***Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers**** Patti Smith Patti Smith had one good song, Tom Petty had about 2 million of them. Metallica ****Creedence Clearwater Revival**** I hate Metallica almost as much as I hate Pink Floyd and the Beatles which we'll get to later. Creedence is an actual favorite of mine. ****Smashing Pumpkins***** Van Halen Pumpkins had at least one good album. ****Paul Simon***** Pink Floyd This is really a vote for Simon and Garfunkel. Simon solo is pretty terrible. At least recently. It seems like ever since he went to Africa he's used that exact same African beat crap in EVERY song. Every song sounds exactly the same now. But I hate Pink Floyd with a passion. I have a Pink Floyd Sucks shirt so I have to go with Simon. Janis Joplin Pink Floyd Two people I really really hate. I'm voting for ***The Ramones***, who for some terribly stupid ass reason are not on this list, which automatically makes the winner of this thing a fraud. R.E.M. ****The Doors**** Doors never sucked. REM has been hot and cold, hot and cold. Radiohead *****Megadeth**** Megadeath isn't a favorite but Radiohead has made me sick. They used to be such a great band that had some great songs. But then they started just making noise and calling it music. It's not music. It's crap. ****U2**** The Grateful Dead Oh God. Two more bands I completely hate. But I hate the Dead more cause they're friggin hippies and hippies killed Bambi. I did like that Elevation song so U2 gets it. The Police *****Ozzy Osbourne***** That's a tough one. But seeing as how I've seen Ozzy fall out of a chair and I haven't seen Sting fall out of one...it goes to Ozzy. Plus Stewart Copeland plays for that sacreligious "new" Doors band. That's a big strike against them. Pixies *****Black Sabbath***** Give me a break on this one. One matters, one doesn't. Pixies have about as much right to be on this list as Blink 182 does. Being obscure doesn't make you cool it makes you poor. ****Stevie Wonder***** Pearl Jam Cause I'm pro-war. ****Nirvana***** George Harrison Hate the Beatles. Solo Beatles are even worse. Don't even understand why he's on here where there are a million truly great people not on the list. Seems like just having a blanket Beatles selection would've been plenty and would've made room for some people that are missing. ***Santana***** Paul McCartney/Wings I honestly went my entire life without ever knowing that Wings existed. I NEVER heard of them until a couple of years ago when that big Wings greatest hits thing came out or whatever. But once again, those damn Beatles. Chicago John Lennon Oh God. The HORROR. THE HORROR. I vote for ***The Black Crowes***. Elvis Costello *****Sonic Youth***** Not a favorite, just can't stand Costello. Makse me want to go to a coffee shop when I hear that stuff. Talking Heads The Smiths Eee gads. I vote for ***Rage Against the Machine***. Aerosmith ****The Sex Pistols**** While Aerosmith was a great band in the 70's, in the grand scale of things, they simply didn't make the same impact that the Pistols did. The Pistols helped create a revolution in music, Aerosmith was just another rock band with some hit songs. Plus as bad as the Pistols were at times, there never as bad as the Aerosmith of today. The Clash *****Lynyrd Skynyrd**** One band is really good, one band is really bad. Simple one right here. Prince ****Led Zeppelin**** Puh-leeeease. David Bowie *****AC/DC**** The guys are in their 60's and still rock. Bowie does a lot of techno BS now. *****Beck**** KISS One Foot in the Grave is one my favorite albums, his recent crap has pretty much sucked but that one album is awesome. Kiss makes my roids flare up. The Beach Boys *****Guns N Roses***** Probably in the grand scheme of things the Boys are much more important, but I can't vote against GnR unless they run up against somebody big time. Cat Stevens ****Buddy Holly**** Uh....cause I'm pro war. ****Elvis Presley***** The Velvet Underground HA HA HA HA HA HA HA My side hurts from laughing. HA HA HA HA HA The Kinks *****Madonna***** Don't like everything she did but you can't deny her impact. Kinks had some great songs but Madonna was hotter. The Rolling Stones *****Michael Jackson***** One is old and sucks, one is old and sucks but is really, really weird. Advantage: Michael. Elton John *****The Who**** John has some good songs but The Who are one of the great rock bands ever. You can't tell me that there has ever been anybody more rock and roll than Keith Moon. He dived into an empty swimming pool people. He demands respect! ****Neil Young**** Billy Joel One of my top three favorite musicians. I like Joel OK, but Young is just the friggin man and a half. Decade never gets too far from me. ****Jimi Hendrix**** Bruce Springsteen Not a big fan but I like Hey Joe. Never understood the deal with Springsteen. Bob Dylan Phil Collins A hippy and a bald Brit. I vote for ***Motley Crue***.

Lest compile a List of the TSM favorites and selections because this list comes from the mind of one personal opinion not a majority... So, I implore Kinetic to absolve this thing and give TSM Four Days to compile 64 bands/Singers from a Wide Range of selections be it Modern Rock, Metal, Classic Pop Rock, R&B, Rap,Punk and more...That way it's an more concise list and it'll allow for an more exciting tournament... Guest WrestlingDeacon Report post Posted April 14, 2003 I actually kind of like just one guy picking out the names. Lord knows if we throw it open to the board at large there will be a ton of flavor of the minute bands and obscure shit that people will think makes them look cool. If things are recast, I say we add some rules, like a band has to have been around for more than five years and scored at least one top 40 hit. Anyway, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Patti Smith -I used to not like Tom Petty, but he's grown on me and the only thing I like about Patti Smith is the 'loose tie, unkempt dress shirt' look. Metallica Creedence Clearwater Revival -How can I go againt Dude Lebowski? Smashing Pumpkins Van Halen -Both are pretty pretensious, but the Smashing Pumpkins are more moody and coy about it than Van Halen who were "fuck you, give us money." Paul Simon Pink Floyd -How you miss back to back Pink Floyd pairings is beyond me. Maybe you wanted to assure they moved on? I should be a dick and vote against them in both pairings, but Simon has sucked cock since Graceland and fallen into his worst habits. Love Something so Right and Hearts and Bones though. Janis Joplin Tom Waites I like Janis, but I think she's grossly overrated due to dying so young. So, I'll throw up a personal pick. R.E.M. The Doors I dislike R.E.M., I loathe the Doors. Radiohead Megadeth -Neither band ever really appealed to me and I'm not versed too much on either. Of what I've heard, I like Radiohead better and they seem the more creative. U2 The Grateful Dead -I just don't care for jam bands, although a lot of my friends do. If you just look at the music and discount the political posturing, U2 is awesome. The Police Ozzy Osbourne -His show has just totally soured me on Ozzy, maybe it's just overkill. I dig the Police anyway and wish they would have done King of Pain and Message in a Bottle at their hall of fame induction. Pixies Black Sabbath -Sabbath are damn near the godfathers of heavy metal. The Pixies are just a bad you toss out to sound cool and with it. Why didn't you just put on the New York Dolls? Stevie Wonder Pearl Jam -Like a lot of your best r&b artists, someone stole his funk in the '80's and has it on a shelf in a mason jar somewhere. Pearl Jam is a band I'm going to need about another ten years on to see if I would consider them as legendary and innovative as Stevie. Nirvana George Harrison -I prefer Ringo solo over George. His stuff was very derivative and soaking in excess. I'm just now starting to really appreciate how great Nirvana was. Santana Paul McCartney/Wings -I am a total mark for Wings. In some ways, I prefer them to the Beatles. Honest. Chicago John Lennon I am voting for Chicago Transit Authority/Terry Kath era, not the Peter Cetera high pitched whiny era. Kath is an unheralded guitar god and they really rocked in the beginning. Elvis Costello Sonic Youth -I can point to a half dozen Costello songs that I like and are a millions times better than anything SY have even though about recording. Talking Heads The Smiths -See above. Aerosmith The Sex Pistols -I'll go with the Pistols based on Aerosmith totally selling out to the Gen X'ers and pretty much disowning all of their awesome '70's stuff. However, I think more people are in love with the Pistols image and legend than the sound itself. The Clash Lynyrd Skynyrd Skynyrd is a guilty pleasure although Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama are so overplayed I can't even listen to them anymore. My favorite would be That Smell. Prince Led Zeppelin Odd pairing, but not really a contest because of the night and day matchup. David Bowie AC/DC AC/DC are a fun band, but I hear them way too much in my area. I'm a mark for white soul era Bowie. Beck KISS -Another odd ball pairing that is a no contest for me based on that. When it comes down to apples and oranges, you go to what tastes better to you. The Beach Boys Guns N Roses -I've always felt that GnR was overrated and their recent collapse leans to proving me right. I also don't believe that much of their music has aged well. Despite that particular surf sound the Beach Boys are timeless. Cat Stevens Buddy Holly -You have to be kidding. Elvis Presley The Velvet Underground -Another band where I think people are more in love with the mystique and legend than the sound itself. Coversely, a lot of people will discount Elvis for the legend and mystique, but his voice is one of the greatest ever. The Kinks Madonna I can't say that I listen to much Madonna and I'm probably a bigger Kinks fan, but you can't deny her. The Rolling Stones Michael Jackson -Off the Wall doesn't get the credit it deserves compared to Michael's later albums. I mark for the Stones big time. Elton John The Who -John is great and I probably would take him over most others here, but the Who are in a class by themselves. Who are You? and Won't Get Fooled Again are two of the greatest songs ever. Neil Young Billy Joel Love CSNY, but the only Young solo tune I dig is Heart of Gold. I can't stand his voice. Joel is really a lot better than most who dismiss him as a contemporary pop star probably realize. Jimi Hendrix Bruce Springsteen -It's Jimi, that's all you have to say. Bob Dylan Phil Collins -Man my brain can't even fathom this one.

Also, VU beat Elvis to sad clumps of paste, even though he is the King. I know we have this discussion a lot, but I don't think there's a less flawed run in American musical history than the VU's four years of glory.

Well, this is pretty much a rock list, so I suppose you're somewhat right. Still, I don't think it's too bad a list at all.
