Yeah, this is pretty much a "classic rock" list, but i like most of the stuff on it so whatever. As for the exclusion of rap; yeah bands like, Tribe Called Quest, Outkast and Beasties are way better than some of the stuff here, but you just have to deal with the fact that, at this time, rap will never be viewed on a best-music-of-all-time level, it's just too new.

And where are the Ramones

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Patti Smith

-Petty has done some really great stuff in his time

Metallica

Creedence Clearwater Revival

-Oh God, please let CCR take this one. I'm listening to Fortunate Son right now.

Smashing Pumpkins

Van Halen

-I love Eddie's guitar work but the songs just don't do it for me.

Paul Simon

Pink Floyd

Janis Joplin

Pink Floyd

-Hmmmmm, i'm going to take this second Pink Floyd as a wild card and do a Fleetwood Mac write in, So sue me.

R.E.M.

The Doors

-This one was close

Radiohead

Megadeth

-Once again, I'm a fan of Mustane's guitar, but I can't stand the songs.

U2

The Grateful Dead

-U2 is just so amazing. The only band IMO to release 2 absolute masterpeice albums, and within 5 years of each other too!

The Police

Ozzy Osbourne

-The Police did great work. Ozzy gets props with Sabbath from me.

Pixies

Black Sabbath

-I agree with everyone who said that the Pixies are only held in high regard to make whoever is talking about them seem cool.

Stevie Wonder

Pearl Jam

Nirvana

George Harrison

-It's Nirvana

Santana

Paul McCartney/Wings

-This time the guitar work wins out over the songs.

Chicago

John Lennon

-I dislike Chicago

Elvis Costello

Sonic Youth

-I don't care about either, but Costello looked awesome at the Grammys doing London Calling.

Talking Heads

The Smiths

-Burnin' down the f^&$ing house.

Aerosmith

The Sex Pistols

-Close call. How do you weigh a band that did one amazing album and blew up against a band that has had an amazing career, but pissed it away more than once.

The Clash

Lynyrd Skynyrd

-OH GOD. This is by far the hardest choice I had to make on this list. I love both bands so much, but the Clash win by a hair.

Prince

Led Zeppelin

-My favorite band ever. They should win this. Better than the Beatles by far.

David Bowie

AC/DC

-Guilty pleasure

Beck

KISS

-Beck shouldn't be here, but I'm sorry I just hate KISS.

The Beach Boys

Guns N Roses

-Yeah, I've never bothered to really listen to the Beach Boys, but they seem to be very influential and reveared; and there are only really 3 GnR albums. So the Beach Boys are probably a much more important band in the grand scheme of things. But screw that, I could listen to Guns N Roses and only Guns N Roses for the rest of my life.

Cat Stevens

Buddy Holly

Elvis Presley

The Velvet Underground

-Yeah right.

The Kinks

Madonna

-MUSIC OVER IMAGE

The Rolling Stones

Michael Jackson

-Both brilliant. I like Rock, I don't like Pop.

Elton John

The Who

-Elton John deserves all the props in the world, but it's the Who.

Neil Young

Billy Joel

-Close call.

Jimi Hendrix

Bruce Springsteen

-No doubt in my mind

Bob Dylan

Phil Collins

-The easiest vote I've ever made. Collins sucks.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: I only have a laisse-faire relationship with either but I would find myself better exposed to Petty and Co.

Metallica: My Metallica fandom seems to fly in the face of everything good and pure about my musical tastes but I don't care.

Smashing Pumpkins: Don't too much care for either but DLR seems like a bigger dick than Corgan.

Pink Floyd: Simon & Garfunkel would a harder choice have made. This one comes relatively easy.

Tom Waits: I'm taking Deacon's lead here and voting for an artist whom I know, deep down, Kinetic intended to include.

R.E.M.: The Doors are severly overrated.

Radiohead: This is laughably easy, almost painfully so.

U2: I don't think I "Get" the Dead enough and, though I am indifferent to them now, U2 produced four of the greatest albums ever released.

The Police: Once again, indifferent to both but can appreciate one more than the other.

The Pixies: I read through once, and thought this was an easy choice to make but a closer look really begs me to consider which genre I prefer as both bands were pioneers in their respective genres.

Pearl Jam: Stevie Wonder seems oddly out of place on this list and I'm a stalwart PJ fan no matter how finely tuned my tastes become.

Nirvana: Not even a contest really, considering All Things Must Pass was all George offered up that was of exceptional quality.

Paul McCartney/Wings: It comes down to the fact that, if I see McCartney in concert these days, I can still groove a couple of Beatles tunes.

John Lennon: The only Beatle with a mention worthy solo career, and, considering it's brevity, a darn good one.

Elvis Costello: There are 8 Costello albums in my collection and only 5 Sonic Youth albums. Quantity claims victory here.

The Smiths: The hardest decision on the ballot but the Smiths had a near flawless record in a shorter time frame which, i believe, says more for their collective genius.

The Sex Pistols: Lydon went on to found Public Image Ltd., whom I like. I like neither of these two, so we'll call this victory by association.

The Clash: This isn't close either. The Clash could have released London Calling ALONE and defeated a third of the bands on this list at least.

Led Zeppelin: Try as I might, I cannot get into Prince on any level. Zep is a somewhat guilty pleasure, that is til I listen to "Houses of the Holy" upon whichtime I feel better about it.

David Bowie: Bowie tried new things. Sometimes failing, Sometimes succeeding, but he at least gave it an effort.

Beck

The Beach Boys

Buddy Holly: My dad played Tea for the Tillerman one too many times when i was younger and I'm forever plagued by a distaste for Stevens.

The Velvet Underground: I'll go on record saying Not. Even. Close.

The kinks

The Rolling Stones: Let it Bleed is better than Thriller

The Who: John, sans Taupin, is fairly unremarkable.

Neil Young: Young is so out of Joel's league that it's embarrassing.

Jimi Hendrix

Bob Dylan: This is the EASIEST decision on the ballot. If Dylan does not sweep I move we injure those who vote Collins.

Two people brought up the Ramones too, so I'd say it's a tie between them and Waits.

A tolerable list. Here goes.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Creedence Clearwater Revival-If metallica wins this, I'm killing Corey. We'll see about that Lazarus part. My money says he stays dead.

Van Halen-This was actually a bit of a tough descision for me, as there's the Siamese Dream era of SP, then there's post Mellon Collie, and then there's Van Halen and Van Hagar. Overall, I went with VH, as they had catchiness down to a science.

Pink Floyd-No brainer.

Pink Floyd-eh, why not twice?

The Doors

Megadeth

U2

Ozzy Osbourne-I have to give Ozzy the edge based on his first two albums.

Black Sabbath-Indie rock and metal explodes. Black Sabbath is the best band in the history of music though, so this was an easy call.

Stevie Wonder

Nirvana

Santana

John Lennon

Sonic Youth

Talking Heads

Aerosmith

The Clash

Led Zeppelin

David Bowie

Beck

The Beach Boys

Buddy Holly

The Velvet Underground

The Kinks

The Rolling Stones

The Who

Neil Young

Jimi Hendrix

Bob Dylan

In matchups in which I haven't really heard enough of either band to judge who is better, or if I dislike both, I just didn't vote for them. Like the Miss Smartmarks tournament, the vote automatically goes to who has less votes, I hope/think...
