Sources: Rogers test reveals masking agent

ESPN.com news services

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wide receiver Charles Rogers, expected to be one of the top picks in the April 26 NFL draft, has tested positive for a masking agent administered at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Sunday.

The masking agent is designed to dilute one's urine and is likely to land Rogers in the evaluation stage of the league's substance-abuse program.

Rogers averaged 20.4 yards per catch and scored 25 times in his two seasons with Michigan State. He is considered one of two blue-chip wide receiver prospects in the draft, along with Miami's Andre Johnson. Rogers scored a touchdown in a Big 10-record 13 consecutive games.

Rogers, who left Michigan State after his junior season, caught 68 passes for 1,351 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2002.

Rogers is projected to be the second player taken in the draft behind Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer of USC, according to ESPN.com's Mel Kiper Jr. The Detroit Lions have the second pick in the draft. Rogers has Randy Moss-like potential, according to Kiper.

He should've used a better masking agent, or at least another one to mask the masking agent.

The masking masking agent. To make DAMN SURE you don't get caught. Juice up all you want, with the masking masking agent, no one will suspect you're using steroids and masking it either. Get your masking masking agent today.

Second reciever to be busted for something...Talman Gardner got busted for possession last week. Gardner will probably fall a lot in the draft as there's a lot of recievers in his draft value area. I'd be curious to see how far Rogers drops if any. Detroit still wants him, but Andre Johnson is just as good. Not sure if you'd want to spend a second round pick on a guy who's already going to be in the substance abuse program. On the other hand...Rogers is supposed to be the one player who no one doubts will have an immediate impact. Interesting question to ask if you're going to draft him.

Well, actually the "masking agent" could be nothing more than water. The NFL counts a diluted urine sample as a positive. However, doctors have admitted that urine samples can be diluted simply by drinking large amounts of water. Rogers, of course, is saying that he was encouraged to drink lots of water by doctors during the combine BECAUSE he couldn't work up anything for an earlier urine test.

To me, this is rediculous. Putting a guy "on notice" simply because he may have drunk more water than normal and letting it be known that he tested positive, thereby implying that he's a juicer, is almost slander. If he tests positive for a banned subject, than the teams deserve to know what they're getting. In this case, they should let him know that his results were abnormal and that the next one should be pristine.

Yes, I know the NFL is covering its bases to keep guys from drinking gallons of water before a piss test so that drugs don't show up. There just oughta be a caveat in the results that say "We didn't find anything, but it doesn't mean there's nothing there." Kind of like a Hans Blix drug report.

All that being said, I hope this scares the Lions into taking Newman or someone else and the Texans can grab him at 3. I doubt it though.
