I'd rather not think about a movie being made. I fear what could become of it in the wrong hands.

You'd think they'd be able to do this without screwing it up too badly since it's not an overly complex book. However, I think we all know better than to assume that they couldn't screw it up.

i'd make it myself, casting my friends from the drama department. salinger would probably like that a lot more than the hollywood treatment.

I would have Chuck Palauiak write the Script and Hire a bunch of real Kids...Have the dude who made OTNEMEM direct...

Or Maybe David Fischer...

Have a Bunch of No Names in the Movies...No Hollywood Cameos...Or shit...

I agree...This would get screwed up...I don't want a movie...I've already seen it in my mind a thousand different ways...I don't need an offical view.

You better be prepared for Winona Ryder to storm the set and set it ablaze because she has stated several times she'd do everything to stop a film of "Catcher in the Rye" from being made

Come to think of it, she should buy the film rights herself so she can ensure it never gets made.

How about the weird kid from American Beauty (also the gay kid from Rules of Attraction) for Holden

I've often thought about a Catcher in the Rye movie. I hope they never make it, but if they do...

I think that Chuck Palinhuik would make a decent script out of it, but he may get a little crazy. I think that Alan Ball, of American Beauty and Six Feet Under fame, could also do a great job. No matter who does it, they shouldn't do much with it. I think the movie should follow the book verbatem.

For a director, go with someone young, as it is a book about youth. If I were the movie studio, I would try and find they guy who is a HUGE fan of the book. They did this with X-Men and Spiderman, and it worked well, the movies rocked. I'd give it to Spike Jonze or someone of that nature. He young and creative, but still has an eye for what makes a classic. I wouldn't want anything crazy like Being John Malkovich or Adaptation, but i think Jonze could be great. He is obviously talented enough to do it right.

And I 100% agree that the cast should be all no-namers. No Hollywood stars in major roles. However, I think that Mr. Spencer and Mr. Anolini could be portrayed very well by established Hollywood veterans. In some form, Holden looks to both of them for guidance, so they could be respected Hollywood guys. The casting of Holden will totally make or break the movie. The script and director really won't matter. As long as the guy playing Holden is captivating, the movie could work.

I think the biggest flaw in the Holden casting, is they would probably cast it too old. The character is a teenager and they would probably stick a twenty five year old in there.

Even if a Catcher in the Rye movie is made and is horrible, I really don't think it could taint my love for the book.

I think that it could be adapted better into a play. It would have to change more, but I think a small theatre setting could capture the essence of the book more.

I'm at the point now that with the amount of script writing that I do, I can no longer read a book without adapting it into a screenplay in my head. Going through it, cutting things out, moving things around. If I read a book that I can't visualize in my head as a movie, I can't read the book anymore. I did the same with Rye and, to me, that would be the easiest book in the world to adapt. You don't need some big shot writer to do it because everything that should be in the script is right there in the book. Nothing should be changed. It's very easy to visualize, to imagine actors reading the lines. All you'd have to do is use the book as the script. Some things would have to go for time consideration but even that's not much. I think it'd be simple to turn it into a movie. BUT...I'm really not sure it'd have the same impact in movie form as it does in book form. Even with it being word for word exactly like the book, I don't know if it works.

That's another issue...How do you present it...Do You show it as Holden going "I wasn't feeling hot" or do you just show this stuff happening...

The meat of the book is Holden's Obervations and Criticism he makes so...That becomes an issue...

CITR would be an easy thing to adapt...It's just it's almost like adapting the bible for some...

Much of the movie would have to be "internal conversation" type of voice overs.

How much of what we read is he actually saying and how much is he thinking? I can't recall.

I thought the whole thing was him talking out loud...

That's kinda of hard to do in a movie...

Do You show his life and then go from there or start with him in the Hospital and then do a "So this what happened" type of deal...

I can't believe he descerated Catcher in the Rye...

Ashton playing Holden would be akin to David Arquette playing Jesus Christ...

I can tell you have ZERO clue of the book...

How do you figure Freddie to play the Annoying ugly weasel and Black to play the Popular Stud?

Jesus Christ...You've really done pissed me off here...

Yes, I was joking. :D

Im not a she im a he!

I have read the book many times. It never really connected to me. It was alright I guess, but never impacted me like it has some of you.

I thought casting Ashton Kutcher as manic despressant Holden Caulfield would be so off the wall stupid. I mean could you imagine the scene when Holden is being held up by Maurice and Sunny and Maurice was played by Bernie Mack? Comedy Gold! Now I know the book has a serious tone, but it would be kinda funny wouldnt it?

I'm sorry but i dont share the same love for the book that others do. My english teacher ruined the book by basically going all PG on all the questions we asked her.

FUCK YOUR BITCH TEACHER! Fucking PC make things sound better for *dumb* unintelligent teachers ruining classics like CITR...

GOD DAMN THEM!

Thank God, I was lucky for my 7th grade teacher to be open and treat me like an intelligent person about this book...

Hell, at least you got to read something cool in school. The only good thing I remember getting to read in school was Beowulf. Besides that it was all crap. I always hear about all these classics that everybody else got "forced" to read while they were in school and I always wish that I would've been able to read that instead of the garbage WE had.

Yeah, I hear ya...I was lucky my teachers were the liberal "take life as it is" Mr. Keating from DPS matter.

The only two books we were forced to read were "Romeo and Juilet" in the 9th grade and "Catcher in the Rye" Senior year...But by that point I had read CITR 20 times...Hell, I made the tests for the teacher...

What all my teachers did was take

10 Books a semester and they were all different styles and a class of 30 would split (3 people to a book) and we would rotate the books...

Sounds Stupid but they made it work...

At one time Jerry Lewis wanted to direct and STAR in a Catcher In The Rye adaptation. I kinda wish he did. That could have been the funniest train wreck of all time.
