Completed 7-11-60-0-0 in three games in '99 and redshirted after hurting his ankle. Replaced Pennington in 2000 and completed 279-457-3,358-21-9. Improved to 315-470-4,132-38-7 in '01, despite playing part of the year with a stress fracture in his leg, which was surgically repaired in February of '02. All-Mid-American Conference and MAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2000 and '01. Suffered a left shin injury Nov. 2 vs. Akron, but played through the pain. Played in all 12 games in '02, making 11 starts. Completed 331-491-4,268-30-10. Declined an invitation to the Senior Bowl in January. Positives: Top leader and competitor, whose teammates and coaches love to be around him. Has rare size and exceptional arm strength that lets you draw your plays on longer paper. Shows good poise under pressure, and like Daunte Culpepper, he can be very hard to tackle and can throw with rushers clinging to him. Leftwich, however, is not the runner Culpepper is. Leftwich can throw every pass, and at times he will show thread-the-needle accuracy. Has a high release point and throws a very catchable ball. Improved ability to look off and locate secondary receivers in '02. Also showed better judgment at times. Is also very well-liked in the community. Does a lot of charity work. Longs to watch film and make himself better. Negatives: Tends to run hot and cold and has too much confidence in his arm strength and accuracy at times. Loses accuracy when on the move and needs to improve footwork outside the pocket. Looks more comfortable in the shotgun. Does bird-dog receivers now and then. Also is not as accurate as teams would like on the short, dump-off passes to backs. Mechanics need work. Will hold the ball too low and sometimes use a little windup, baseball pitcher's delivery, which is not needed for a player with his gun. Can get too heavy. Will try to do too much. Chronic shin problems will be checked out thoroughly. Didn't exactly play against the best competition, and when he did, like vs. Virginia Tech last September, the results were mixed at best. Summary: Might only fit in an open offense, but he will be a top draft pick and could become a star if he improves his quickness and niftiness, and cuts down on his forced passes. I was tempted to take Palmer since he was unexpectedly there and obviously the Cowboys qb situation is not good. Knowing Parcells I think he'd rather take a guy who has dominant pass rusher for the next 15 years written all over him than a quarterback which your always taking a chance on and I also think Suggs is about as much of a can't miss in the entire draft. Obviously the guy taking Leftwich at #4 was picking who he'd want because no way the Bears take him that high. Maybe if they traded down they would. I guess its just up to you. Wanna talk overrated I will laugh at any team that buys into the hype of Kyle Boller. I know college success or lack their of isn't the biggest factor in a player's success in the NFL but Boller was a mediocre to bad quarterback his first three years at Cal. He did have a good senior year but for this guy to go from being a late round pick at best to possibly a top 10 pick and even ahead of Byron Leftwich is laughable. Don't you know, in scouts eyes the individual workout is much more important than game time performances? I sometimes wonder why even play, just keep yourself in shape and keep some hype around you then blow the scouts away at the combine and workout and enjoy your top ten pick money. The Ravens are pretty much set on getting a QB, either through a trade (Cullpepper) or through the draft (Leftwich or Boller)..they will take Leftwich if hes there at 10 (hes who the Ravens really want) but if not they'll take Boller. I had it planned the whole time to take Leftwich if he was around when it was my turn to pick. I like Leftwich more than I do Carson Palmer anyways. Edited to re-word the first sentence. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted April 18, 2003 *Inside the Buffalo Bills war room* The moves we have made thus far in the offseason seem to have freed us up to take the best player available on our board when the 23rd pick comes up. Drew Bledsoe should soloidify our starting QB spot for the next few years, and while it isn't too early to start thinking about grooming a quarterback to take his place using a first round pick on this QB class this late in the round would be a poor value pick for a team trying to win now. I like to draft a QB late in the draft each year to see what they have, or at least invite an undrafted QB to camp to challenge for the #3 spot. We recently extended the contract of HB Travis Henry and we like his effort and ability...but his fumble problems are a major area of concern. Sammy Morris is our special teams captain and while he has proven adequate as a fill in back...what we really need is a vetran back up in case of injury or fumbling problems. This isn't something to be addressed in the draft, let alone the first round. We're high on FB Phillip Crosby who showed he could be a dominant blocker in limited duty last year. We signed Sam Gash and expect Crosby to soldify the FB position for years to come. Letting go of Larry Centers shows that we are commited to moving to a ball control offense and not the pass happy version that faded away last year. We are content at the FB position. The trade of Peerless Price leaves a hole in the explosive WR corp of last year. Eric Moulds is still our go to guy, and Josh Reed looked very impressive as the #3 receiver last year. He'll need to step up as the #2 this year which will change the dynamic of the offense as he lacks Price's speed and game breaking ability, but the kid is fearless and doesn't drop what's thrown at him. FA pick up Bobby Shaw figures in as the #3. We feel there is a great drop of after the first couple of receivers in the draft (both of whom are already off the board) and no one we could pick up at #23 would be a better value than Reed, who we got in the second round last year. This is a position that we expect to fill after June first cuts as we'll try to bring in someone to challenge Reed and Shaw for the #2 and #3 spots. Tight End is a position that could use a boost. We traded a pick next year for Mark Campbell out of Cleveland, and veteran Dave Moore is still here. We cut Jay Riemersma due to his declining play as a reciever and he never was much of a blocking threat. We're happy enough with the TE corp (it being not nearly the most important position on our offense...especially as a receiving option) that using a first round pick would not be advised. Miami proved last year that you can find a great value at Tight End later in the draft if you know where to look. We have that confidence in our scouting department. Jonas Jennings and Mike Williams won't be replaced at Starting Tackles for the next decade (barring injury). Backup Marcus Price proved very valuable last season. No need to use first round pick here. We'll look to the later rounds to find some more depth. We were pleased with the progress of Guard Marques Sullicvan last year. Ruben Brown is one of the top guards in the league but he isn't getting any younger. After Iowa Guard Eric Steinbach there is a great fall in quality Guards in this draft. We'll have to address getting a young stud to replace Brown sooner than later...but this doesn't look like the year as we'd have to reach at this pick. We'll probably draft someone later in the draft. We are high on last years 6th round pick Mike Pucillo who can play bouth Guard and Center. Trey Teague isn't going to be beaten out at our starting Center position, as he and the rest of the O-Line is only just starting to gel together. We have no back-up Center to speak of, and if the opportunity to get a good value arises it may be smart to take that route and let Teague move out of the Center position (not his natural spot, tackle is) as a transition to Guard would be easy for him. If the right Center can be found in the next couple years, Teague could serve as Brown's replacement. London Fletcher, Takeo Spikes and Jeff Posey give us the best looking Linebacking corp this team has seen since the years of Cornelius Bennett and Darryl Talley. No one we select in the first round would have a chance of cracking the starting squad for the next few years (barring injury). This also looks like a weak LB class this year. Brandon Spoon showed signs of being an adequate back up two seasons ago before losing last season to injury. If he can recover well, than he along with Dashon Polk will give us enough depth to address any needs after June 1st. DT was once the top priority on our board as we have needed a fat run stuffer to stand next to Pat Williams for the last 2 years. We finally got that fat man this year in Sam Adams. Justin Bannan and Ron Edwards provide enough depth that this position is off of our round 1 radar. Aaron Shoebel continues to improve on one end of the D-Line but the other side may be our biggest concern. We signed two DEs this year who are both coming off of major injuries. Marcus Jones is ahead of schedule and will be healthy going into training camp. Whether or not he can return to form is a different question. Keith McKenzie is also doing well and will be used as a situational pass rusher if healthy. Last years 2nd round pick Ryan Denney showed nothing to say he deserves a spot on the roster let alone be considered for starting. He has bulked up in the offseason but only has until the end of this preseason before we label him a bust and move on. Very possible use of #1 pick if the player is right. We love our starting CBs Antoine Winfield and Nate Clements. However, Winfield is a free agent after this season. We have begun talks with ihs agent about extending his contract...but if that isn't worked out by the time we pick it might be wise to draft a CB tat will replace him. Remember last season we used a 2nd rounder to select Josh Reed knowing that he would likely be replacing Peerless Price after the season. Safety is another position that isn't locked up. We like the fire that Coy Wire brings to SS and he could be there for years to come. But he has shown little improvement in coverage and has been a liabilty in that area. Peirson Prioleau and Izell Reese will battle over the FS position...Prioleau hits hard and could challenge Wire for SS if Reese wins that battle. If the right player falls to #23 we could draft a Safety.
