Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted April 23, 2003 *Inside the Bills War room* We went into this draft with the belief that whoever we chose at this pick would not be a starter this season. Part of our philophy is to use the first pick to draft big...which means we tend to favor linemen early. We could use help at Safety and at this point we could have our pick at that spot...but we feel that there are a couple of D-linemen who would be a better value. At first glance our bigger team need would be a Defensive End in case Marcus Jones and Keith McKenzie don't return well from injury. However drafting an End at this stage of the draft would signal the end of the road for last year's 2nd round pick Ryan Denney. He hasn't shown enough to keep us from selecting an end. Our Defense likes to substitute often to keep people fresh. This is particularly true of the Defensive Tackle position. Sam Adams was signed to play next to Pat Williams giving us a pair of run stuffers for the first time in memory. Ron Edwards, last years starter, is the primary sub in guy...but he hasn't shown an ability to stop the run...a necessity in a division where you play Ricky Williams and Curtis Martin twice a year (and now Willis McGahee based on the last pick). We're pretty torn as to which player to take so we will go to the best available on our board and at this time that is DT William Joseph out of Miami. *this ends the look inside the Bills war room* With the 23rd pick in the NFL Draft the Bills select DT William Joseph from the University of Miami. Sure I will, at that point it should be just who is here to make a pick and alternate so it goes fast. Should create some interesting results.

Guest the pinjockey Report post Posted April 24, 2003 The Giants time is up and bravesfan is here to pick afterwards so I am picking the Giants pick. With the 25th selection the Giants select DT Ty Warren.
Guest the pinjockey Report post Posted April 24, 2003 With Keith Hamilton gone the Giants need a defensive lineman. There was consideration for a DE but with Strahan they have one legitimate pass rusher. They need to concentrate on solidifying the middle of the line. Notes: Uncle, Curtis Dickey, was a top running back at A&M and the Colts' top pick in 1980. Dickey never lived up to being the fifth overall selection in the draft, and his career started to really slip after his fourth season, the only year he rushed for more than 1,000 yards. Dickey was a big runner with near-world-class speed and good hands. Warren is a 300-plus-pound tackle, 3-4 end and nose tackle who has had a weight-gain problem at times. He lettered as a redshirt freshman in 1999, when he was just 18 years old. Started the last eight games in 2000 as a defensive end in a 3-4 and started the 10 games in which he was healthy enough to play in '01, when he won All-Conference recognition. Had 13 tackles in '99; 38 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and five sacks in 2000, when a knee injury slowed him down coming out of fall practice; and 41-12-4 in '01, when he started seven times on the nose and three times outside. Really came on in '02, when he had 52-12-4½ despite missing games Eight and 11. Had a nice Senior Bowl, where he showed some burst to go with his run-stuffer's bulk. Positives: Big, powerful, quick, athletic DLE-type who can dominate, come off and kick BUTT. Can play end or tackle in a 3-4 or tackle in a 4-3. Can be a force when he is playing hard, in shape and playing with leverage and technique. Has outstanding athletic ability. Negatives: Lacks quickness, play speed, consistency and intensity, gets stuck on blocks and is slow to shed. Inconsistent off the ball. Gets too high and must learn to use leverage. Has a tendency to either take plays off or get sloppy about his technique and play too upright, at which times he becomes almost a nonfactor. Summary: If he can stay healthy and responds to NFL coaching, Warren could surprise as Shaun Rogers did as a second-round pick of the Lions in 2001.

Guest bravesfan Report post Posted April 24, 2003 With the 26th pick in the 2003 TSM.com Mock Draft...the San Francisco 49ers select Wayne Hunter, offensive tackle from the University of Hawaii. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wayne Hunter Offensive Linemen | (6-5, 303, 5.12) | HAWAII Notes: In high school, played basketball and was a track weight man. Also part of canoe team and played linebacker. Played in 10-of-12 games on the defensive line at the University of California as a true freshman in 1999, recording 14 tackles, including five tackles for loss. Redshirted in 2000 after transferring to Hawaii. Played in 11-of-12 games in '01, starting two at defensive tackle, recording 12 tackles and one for loss, but was hampered by a back injury most of the season. Moved to the other side of the ball and started 13-of-14 games at left tackle last fall, missing the finale for disciplinary reasons. Entered the NFL draft with one year of eligibility remaining. Improved his stock immensely at the Combine, when he benchpressed 225 pounds 37 times and ran a 5.1 40. Positives: Big, physical, athletic player with a huge up side. Very strong. Has long arms and a powerful punch. Locks on and is very aggressive. Tough and nasty with some athletic ability. Thick and wide. Good in small areas. OK adjusting in space. Huge frame and should have no problem adding 20-30 pounds. Good footwork. Great upper-body strength and explosion. Negatives: Played tackle just one year. Lacks technique and polish. Played in a predominantly passing offense and does not run block well. Average mental alertness. Not the most consistent. Gets off the ball slowly on running plays and can improve his leg drive. Summary: May not be ready to contribute immediately, but he may have more up side than any other lineman in the draft because he has great athleticism and can be molded. My Take: It was either a run-stuffing DT, or the best offensive lineman on the board. The defensive side was depleted, so I'll choose this guy. Judging by what I've seen of him each week, he's a FREAK OF NATURE. The polish he needs to become a great lineman will be solved quite quickly, under the tutelage of Pro-Bowl linemen, teammates Ron Stone and Jeremy Newberry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted April 24, 2003 If it comes down to this, and they cannot pick up a defensive back the caliber of Troy Polamalu, I believe the Steelers will trade this pick for a veteran defensive back. With that being said, I will draft the top defensive back on our board. With the 27th selection of the 2003 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select Sammy Davis, Cornerback, Texas A&M. Notes: High school All-American. Started twice as a true freshman in 1999 and every game from 2000 through '02. Has started 36 consecutive games. Had 13 tackles and broke up three passes in '99. Had 38-10 with four interceptions in 2000 and 74-10-5 in '01, when he also returned nine kickoffs for 162 yards. Won All-Big 12 honors in 2000 and '01. Had 62-6-2 in '02, when he also had 4½ tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. Impressed many scouts with a sound week of practice at the Senior Bowl. Positives: Good keying and diagnosing plays. Good ball reaction and hands. Will hit and tackle. Plays smart. Good athletic ability. Has a 40-inch vertical jump. Smart, aware and instinctive. Solid, does everything well in position. Plays faster when he is backed off or in bump-and-run coverage. Top intangibles. Productive with good ball skills, reactions and jumping ability. Strong in the weight room, as evidenced at the Combine, where he paced defensive backs with 19 reps of 225. Will hit and tackle. Negatives: Good but not special. Spindly. Does more shuffling and bailing than backpedaling. Plays loose and is late arriving in zone coverage. Questionable top-end and makeup speed. Lacks burst and acceleration. Average press corner. Lacks ability to backpedal and turn. Does not have great range. More quick than fast. Not very physical. Summary: Good bump-and-run corner in the mold of Kevin Smith The Steelers would be interested in trading for a lower second round pick as well.

Bored 0 Report post Posted April 24, 2003 Was just about to update it but I see bps21 is here so I'm sure he'll handle it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the guy with the next pick has posted in the topic so I wouldn't wait too long before just doing the pick ourselves. If we can finish the 1st Round tonight then could bang out the 2nd round tommorrow. Oh and will this be the thread to cover and talk about the actual draft or should we create a new one? Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted April 24, 2003 Willis McGahee would be the only back I'd consider picking in the 1st round if I was the Steelers. Other than that, you can get a good running back later in the draft.
Guest Chuck Woolery Report post Posted April 24, 2003 We're probably going to take a receiver early, as all of our good receivers have departed. I toyed around with taking a third cornerback, but decided that we could save that for later. We realize that picking this late in the draft means our top receiver probably won't be a starter, so we decided to pick someone with tremendous upside. All that said... The Tennessee Titans' draft representative, Mike Van Siclen, steps up to the microphone. MVS: Ladies and gentlemen, with the 28th pick in the draft, the Tennessee Titans have decided to take tight end Jason Witten, a man from our hometown school of Tennessee. --- Notes: Entered the draft after his junior season. High school All-America tight end and defensive end. Enrolled in 2000 as a defensive end but was needed on offense, where he started twice in extra-TE sets and caught his first pass for 11 yards. Was the best tight end in the Southeastern Conference in '01, although, technically, he only started two games. Caught 28 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns during the season and had 6-125-0 vs. Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. In 2002, was the leading receiver with 34-452-5, starting 12 of 12 regular-season games and earning All-SEC honors as a junior. Also started Peach Bowl (5-41-0). Finalist for the Mackey Award given to the nation's top tight end. Positives: Big, fast, strong and athletic. Competes hard. Has very good hands and can stretch defenses. Is physical and flashes dominating ability as a blocker. Can make the tough catch and run over and away from defenders. Has a great upside. Very strong with a 455-pound bench-press. Only 20 years old. Negatives: Not that fast. Inconsistent and not dominating as a blocker. Does not have thick legs and can improve running after the catch. Could have used another year in school. Summary: Because of his potential, size and strength, will be drafted in the first two rounds. The possibility of trading up to draft a better WR or TE is immense. Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted April 24, 2003 I don't think they can afford to overlook the direct need in the secondary, even for a franchise QB. QBs don't age as badly as CBs, and Dewayne Washington is already in his 30's, which is well past the normal prime for a CB... As far as RBs go, the Steelers have been rumored to be looking at Larry Johnson as well... I was considering either Johnson or Boller as picks for the Steelers, but Davis is too money to pass up, really. ESPN predicted that they'll take Andre Woolfolk out of Oklahoma, who went a little bit early in our draft.
