A Mighty Wind

Recommended Posts

Christopher Guest's first two films have made him a cult legend. As a fan of Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, I was really excited to see this movie. The trailer also made it look good.

It was HORRIBLE.

A Mighty Wind is far and away the worst movie so far this year. It fails on every aspect that his other 2 films work on. First of all, there are just too many characters. Guest tries to fit in so many characters, that no one is developed and every single person is a one-joke character. Correction: a very dumb, one-joke character. Most of the "regulars" are wasted. I think Parker Posey has ONE line.

The film also breaks away from the mockumentary continuity. I won't give and details as to not spoil any scenes, but at times you find yourself asking "wouldn't the documentary guy/camera crew do something?"

From what I can think of, Eugene Levy is good in every movie he is in. Not true here. He is the ONLY character that is developed and is far and away, the LEAST funny character in the movie.

The biggest problem with the movie is the ad-libbing by the cast just isn't funny. Even the conciously added dick and fart jokes in the movie are dumb.

Everything the Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show do right, A Mighty Wind does wrong.

Anyone else see it? Any thoughts?

I haven't seen the movie, but I was looking forward to it. The reviews have been good, so I'll still go out to see it. I hope it isnt as bad as you said.

It's in 14 cities now with a wider release coming, but I don't know how wide or when.

If you mean this is Guest's second film as director, you're wrong. It's his fourth as he also directed the Big Picture and Almost Heroes along with some t.v. work. Of course, you have to mention Spinal Tap which he wrote and starred in and had a good hand in making overall.

I'm intrigued to the see A Mighty Wind and probably still will if it gets anywhere near me. Fred Willard is my personal Jesus.

I love the other Guest films, so I'll the be seeing this one. The movie got 91% Fresh on RottenTomatoes.com, so that's saying something.

Christoper Guest also directed "Amost Heroes" the Chris Farley/Matthew Perry movie. So a not-so-great movie wouldn't be that unlikely.

Almost Heroes had some potential, but mostly just coasted on Chris Farley's charm (I can't look at the guy and not smile) ... but the production values were terrible (looked like it was shot on a VHC-C camcorder) and the story/acting weren't up to a feature. It was more of a tv movie or extended sketch kind of feel. But I haven't seen the movie in like 5 years, so what the hell do I know?

Isn't "A Mighty Wind" simply a folk-country version of Spinal Tap?

And yet I ask...is that bad?

Just in case any of you don't really like that movie...I invite you to go see the best movie none of you have ever seen: Best in Show. Also directed by Mr. Guest. I don't think I've laughed so many times throughout that damn movie. If you expect a hee-haw kinda funny movie, this ain't it. You gotta listen to what they say. I don't think my father and I have laughed more at a movie. It is simply brilliant.

The Guest movies are the ONLY ones (besides MST3k) that both me and my dad can watch and enjoy. That's really saying something since we are polar opposites.

Actually I was looking for some sort of reference towards what to expect from the film. I haven't found that much coverage of "A Mighty Wind" in the media, so I was wondering if this would be done in the similar tongue-in-cheek manner or if this will be played totally straight.....

It's just like the other Guest movies in tone and humor, just spoofing the early sixties folk scene, which was very popular until the British invastion kicked in.

Funny story:

I heard an intervierw with one of the guys from the movie who was also in Spinal Tap (I want to say Michael McKean but I'm not sure). He mentioned that at a Spinal Tap performance recently they had as their opening act the folk band from this movie, which is of course the same guys. The fans booed them off the stage. They wanted these guys to leave just so they could come back.

Damn.

The snippets of the film that Ebert & Roeper aired in their review had me laughing uncontrollably. It had also sold me on the concept, as well.

At least it was good in hindsight.
