The Official 2003 NBA Playoffs Thread

Its so funny to hear Laker fans talk about consistency when all I recall is Laker fans calling other fans/teams whiners and babies for crying over the refs all these years.

I guess you missed this:

My thoughts from Game 2:

-The refs, again, were horribly inconsistent... but that is absolutely no excuse to go away from the triangle and play Clipper defense, as opposed to the championship variety the Lakers have shown the last three years.

-Robert Horry has got to go, I hope to God he doesn't come back next year. He is, without a doubt, the worst defender of the Lakers. All the experts talk about his ability to poke the ball away, to me that is a side effect of his poor, unbelievably lazy defense. The guy NEVER moves his feet, he doesn't step out on pick and rolls, he doesn't block out on rebounds, and he forgets to take out the ball, EVERY TIME.

-Devean George's injury is also much worse than I thought. But I was hoping Fisher or another bench player might seize the opportunity and step up in a big way. As of last night I have been sorely mistaken. Not to say that something great will not happen in Game 3, I still hold a little hope left. George plays the kind of defense the Lakers need right now, active and disrupting and always eating up every single defensive rebound. He would also ignore the bullshit "get back on defense" crap and chase down the misses by Kobe and Shaq, something no one else does... I'm looking at you Rob.

-It's clear the young guys thought they would just go along for the ride and collect another ring. Rush was horrible last night. Every pass sucked, he got eaten alive on the screen-roll, and he couldn't make a shot to save his life. The only thing Pargo had going for him was the fact that Derek Fisher couldn't keep up with Parker if his life depended on it. This is the series that always dumbfounds me as to why management wouldn't pay Tyronn Lue to stay in L.A. They'd be much better off starting that guy and allowing Fisher to come off the bench, a role that always suited him better. For this game, suffice it to say, when Medvedenko is your best player off the bench, you've got a serious problem. Although I'd like to find out why Jackson wouldn't play Madsen... he is so much better than Horry.

-I was almost physically sick watching them play defense. Both coaching and play on the floor sucked. It was obvious the direction for Kobe to help out on Duncan was strict and came from Phil. They obviously didn't think Bruce Bowen would get hot like that. But when the guy is hot for 3 1/2 quarters maybe a change in strategy is in order. The guy hit 7 three-pointers for crying out loud. Don't you think Kobe would get on him, and when a switch came, shouldn't Horry or Shaw sprint to the guy? If I can figure that out why can't they?

-I'm not going to go on a long diatribe about the refs, but they sucked and were extremely inconsistent. But as the rest of my post shows, that had about 2% of an effect on this particular loss. But three offensive fouls in the next game on Shaq might make me start to think otherwise.

-I still want to see Game 3, especially the reffing and, more importantly, the offensive contribution of the role players and the Lakers' team defense. I want to see how this goes before I give up.

This is the first time I've watched the Celtics all year (I live in Maine). I've lost so much intrest in basketball in the last couple of years, but this looks to be a really good game (especially because the crowd.)

Not if the Celtics have any say in it, it appears. They've turned the ball over 5 times already and Antoine still sucks.

The Celtics are forcing shots too much rather then passing it around and waiting for a good shot...jeez, Antoine...stop forcing yourself

The ref feared for his life with that call. He called Kidd to save his ass.

This a pathetic display of basketball. Antoine Walker is the most worthless player in the NBA.

*claps slowly*

Wow.....welcome to the Celtics organization Danny Ainge, please trade Antione Walker NOW! Oh, and figure out some voodoo spell that can be worked on the Players Union so they'll allow you to toss Vin Baker on the street.

WALKER HIT A SHOT!!! Someone give him a cookie.

Walker serioiusly needs to give the ball up...he's more focued on getting a three pointer then anything else.

Does Walker ever smile?

And if I was commissioner I would give teams like the Celtics a Vin Baker bail out. If you were willing to give him 1.5 times what his contract is then I would let you release him and free up the cap money. Granted this would cost a shitload of money and reward the loser but it would give teams an out and certainly punish them for their mistake.

Woah, Walker and that fan were exchanging words for a bit...security caught the guy just in time. Luckily, Antoine didn't have to take a swing at that fan, or....

I cant believe his face never changed through that. He still looked like he was pouting as a fan came after him. Look pissed or scared or something other than pouting dammit.

Yeah...the Kings are pretty much done. They can play well without Webber, but I don't think they can withstand Dallas onslaught without him.

The Kings can beat Dallas with or without Webber, but they won't beat San Antonio.

It's not official that Webber is gone. The doctors said 4-6 weeks, but the doctors are always overcautious. Barkley from personal experience said it could be as little as two weeks.

So either he's gone for the year or he'll be back by game 2 or so of the next round.

Barkley is tougher than Webber. Unless the league extends the second round by about two weeks, I don't see him coming back.

Saying Webber could be back in the next round implies that Sacramento is going to beat the Mavericks. Even with Webber, I'm not sure that'd be a guarantee.

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

Walker smiles when he's making shots.

So no, never.

*rimshot*

and as for the Kings, HA! That's what happens when you build your team around Webber and expect to win in the playoffs. The Kings are still a good team, but to beat the Mavs and THEN beat the Spurs/Lakers seems impossible without your best player.

Playoff related question:

Does K - Mart have a twitching problem ? I saw him talking to Cheryl Miller, he looked like he was twitching...

AND...

STOP COUNTING OUT MY KINGS, DAMN IT.

I believe they can and will beat Dallas without C - Webb. After Dallas, it's tough to call...

Kings wouldn't beat the Spurs with or without Webber. Hell, they probably have a better shot at winning without that friggin piece of crap loser.

I noticed Kenyon Martin doing that wacky stuff too. That was weird as hell.

Well, George was back so that was the difference. As long as LA has the starting five we have I think we can still do this. But if we lose anybody else, we're history.

Oh, and what about the refs. They fucked everybody tonight. They called a couple of fouls on Duncan that were shit. And there were a few that Shaq picked up that were bulshit too.

This is going to be a great series.

Hopefully, the Lakes can bulid somthing out of Game 3 tonight. Its a start but its still a long series. Like many Laker fans Game 2 made me sick. Game 3 they came out wih a purpose and blew out the Spurs. If anything issid about the 02-03 Lakers is that they play the best when their back is against the wall. San Antonio is a great team, but they needed to beat the Lakers today to end it. They had the kill shot, but missed. But im getting ahead of myself. Lets see what happens in Game 4.

Kings fans cant uy a break, can they?
