Guest My Eyebrow is on fire Posted April 17, 2003 Report Posted April 17, 2003 Ok here's how this subject will work - maybe it will work, maybe it won't, but I think it's probably the best idea I've had. The worst idea i've ever had was actually shitting in palm and seeing if that corn in my shit really was undigested corn. It was indeed corn. I like making mix tapes - but I don't listen to the radio anymore so I'm running out of material - I'm interested in other genres or whatever. 1) Person posts the name of a song and artist. a) The song must not be a CURRENT radio hit. The lesser known the better. b) You must believe that the song is likeable almost instantly, no more than 2 listenings should it take to get it into your head. c) It must be of a different genre than the last persons song (to avoid consecutive hip hop songs, consecutive metal songs, consecutive pop). d) It must be in a different MOOD than what the last person posted. (I.e. Person posts aggressive, it has to be followed by mellow, or dance). Basically this is for those songs you hear on an album which were never singles, or never got exposure, but you just KNOW that they're great songs and people would like them if they just heard them once or twice. This is to give those songs a chance. Songs which you wish you could show to people because they're so good and deserve a listen. 2) Next person on the thread must download the last song from kazaa or wherever - give his opinion -and then recommend a song. This has potential to be a fun thread - and hopefully I'll get a few mix CD's of new material on it. First track I'm contributing: "Black Superman" - by Above the Law - 1994 - Aggressive hip hop.

I think I saw its video on MTV once, it was in black & white and had Fred destroy a room or something. I also think the band preformed this at the Spring Break fashion show, not bad performance with the guys giving INTENSE~ stares to the camera and Wes looking like some anime fanboy just leaving a convention. The sound was different than its current form it was dare I say more punkish.

I generally like the musicianship and horn work in ska, which was decent here and the guitar work in the middle really surprised. The bizarre "space sound effects" in the background in the bridge seemed a little out of place. I liked the harmonizing in the beginning and the background echos on the chorus. It's actually a pretty peppy song that masks the tongue and cheek sentiments. I'd give it a thumbs up. My pick: Temptation Eyes by the Grass Roots

It was indeed corn. There are some things that I'm happy to accept on blind faith. Innocent by Our Lady Peace. This song grew on me after a few listens. I'm still not crazy about Our Lady Peace's singer--I cringe whenever Chris Benoit's music starts playing (the non-OLP version was better)--but he wasn't too bad here. The ending is a bit tiresome, with the annoying chorus being repeated over & over. The beginning of the song is good, though. My song: "Bend Your Mind" by Elysian Fields (somewhat upbeat & danceable)

As for Round Room, I'm not too into Phish but I have friends who are and am familiar with their stuff. I have to be honest and say that I thought this was a terrible song. The vocals were way thin and very off key, the lyrics were a little too flat and nonsensical even for Phish and the musicianship didn't strike me in the least. My pick and hopefully someone will listen to it this time: Circle Sky by the Monkees.

Innocent by Our Lady Peace is my absolute favorite song, ever. Raine's voice is an aquired taste however, so I'm sure it's not for everyone. Round Room by Phish. Used to hate Phish, but after being exposed to them by every wannabe hippie at school, they've grown on me. Round Room is one of their better ones, too. This is Not An Exit by Saves The Day. I HATE SAVES THE DAY. SHITTY, SHITTY EMO CRAP. My song: Keli Richards by The Gin Blossoms. Short, compact, to the point, and just an all around amazing Rock Song.

Little Bastard sounds a little amatuerish in the vocals and musicianship, but it's a fun song and I like the light rhythm of it. My friend Vollans wouldn't stop singing the chorus for months, though, so the song is detracted for that reason and that reason alone. Still, it's System Of A Down, so it's good (according to me, anyways). My rec: Engels Leid - "Machine Age" ...but it's rare, REALLY rare, so here's an alternate in case you can't find it: Toxic Narcotic - "People Suck" EDIT: If need be, I'll send you the Engels Leid tune over AIM.
