Kerry Fraser and Steve Javie

Is it just me or does it always seem like any contreversial game in the NHL and NBA has these two officiating it.

Fraser doesn't like to mess his hair up.

Honestly, though, I never really pay attention to the refs (and I don't follow basketball), so I really couldn't tell you.

Sounds to me that it's Steve Javie who is involved with controversial calls more IMO. Take that incident where Pat Riley was fined (which was bullshit) as an example.

I dunno about Kerry Fraser though, I haven't heard too much about him.

I don't think that there's anything on earth that CAN mess up Fraser's hair.

Personally, I don't think that Fraser's officiating is very consistent, and that he tends to adjust his style based on the other ref working the game, so you're never sure what to expect from him in any given game. Contrast that to Bill McCreary and Paul Stewart, who are probably the most consistent refs in the NHL.

Nothing ruins the chance of a good game more than the announcement that Kerry Fraser is officiating. It's a matter of when - not if - he blows a major call. You can only hope that it helps your team, and not the other.

Fraser sucks.

That's a chant that's been heard in many an NHL arena...

A good referee is one that you don't even notice throughout the night. They make the calls, ignore the borderline ones, and through in a little "let them play" when the situation calls for it.

Fraser can't have this, he has to be noticed and be a central figure in the game. He'll make a borderline call against the home team that will have them foaming at the mouths in the stands. He'll ignore an obvious call right in front of him to get the same reaction. He also doesn't have a clue on how to get the flow of the game, you'll have a great game going, fast paced game going and he'll flush it away by making a bs call, then following it up with another bs call ten seconds later to negate an exciting power play. Unlike a good referee, he wants to be noticed and remembered. That's one of the reasons for the perfect hair. It's also why he makes so many controversial calls.

Has to be at the centre of everything, doesn't want to be forgotten, very nice hair... he could be Kevin Nash's relative...

Can't forget Dick Bevetta in the NBA. I'm sure the Sacto Kings certainly haven't after Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals last year.

If the Lakers are behind in a series, I'm sure that Bevetta will be assigned the critical game...

I haven't been watching the Wild v. Avalanche game (taping it because I'm watching the Blues v. Canucks game live), but I heard the immortal words from John Buccigross on ESPN 2...

"After a dicey call by Kerry Fraser..."

I can only imagine.

No personal knock on anyone, but could it be that people are upset with said ref when they cost your team the game.

Sure, but in a game where I consider myself to be "neutral" there should be no bias there, right?

Fraser called that VERY questionable 'holding the stick' late in the third against Minnesota that almost cost them the series.

Plus, I didn't see Forsberg get his stick high enough to warrant coincidental minors.

Of course. I was just refering to game where you want someone to win. I'll be the first to admit I'm guilty of this.

What does everyone think of makeup calls? They happen in all sports. IMO...human error is part of the game, one team will be hurt by human error. It doesn't seem right that an official is purposely making a bad call to makeup for a bad call, that he wasn't intentionally making.

I don't like makeup calls, but I kind of understand them. You mentioned human error, and that's very true. But it's human nature to try and atone for your mistakes. Refs are just doing what comes naturally, even though it's contrary to the authoritarian position they've been given.

Sure he called the questionable holding the stick call but then he came back with a worse call on the Rob Blake charge. Has to get his mug on TV in the last 10 minutes.

BTW, is it not Fraser who is partly responsible for Quebec moving to Denver.

I think it was the 95 playoffs where he made that terrible call in the Nords-Rangers series on the Kovalev dive. Call cost the Nords the series and a shot at the Cup that year. Might not have been Fraser and it might have been 94. Help me out here someone.

I remember that call. It was in the first round of the '95 playoffs and Sakic went up and scored but they had to call the goal back because of Kovalev being 'hurt'. The Rangers went on to upset the Nords (who were the #1 seed in the East that year) before Quebec moved to Colorado. I'm not sure if Fraser was the ref though (for some reason, I think it was Andy Van Hellemond [sp?]), but whoever it was, that has to rank up there in terms of horrible calls.

Also, I'm not sure if the Nords would have survived in Quebec past that year, anyway, although it would be hard to move a Stanley Cup winner (or at least maybe a finalist) the year after they won the Cup.

Hey, the North Stars were a finalist and they ended up in Dallas the next year. I was so rooting for them to win the Cup that year. Same goes for the Jets in their last year.

I think the Stars had one year in Minnesota after they lost to Pittsburgh before they went to Dallas. I remember them dropping the old logo for the new 'Stars' one a year or so before they moved south.

Yeah it was Andy Van Hellemond, and that has to rank up there with one of the greatest injustices ever in the game. He took a whack that wouldn't have broken an egg, but went down like he was shot. [opinion]Andy saw him rolling on the ice dying and felt so bad about missing what happened that he made a retroactive call, thinking he has to call something if a player is hurt that badly.[/opinion] This was such an injustice number one because replays showed just how obvious of a dive it was, but more than that because it was done to Van Hellemond, who was one of the most highly regarded and respected officials in the league for his ability to call a proper game. He was around for 5 or 6 years after that and that call was always a black eye for him.

That charging call on Blake was typical classic Kerry Fraser, he was looking for absolutely anything to call on the Avalanche so that everyone would be talking about a call he made. The hit was hard, but was by no means charging under the rule book, and was definately one that should have been let go based on the situation in the game.

Not that I'm complaining, my wife is a huge fan of The Wild.
