Guest godthedog Report post Posted April 20, 2003 ghost world But they were graduating from high school at the beginning of the movie. I wouldn't call it a high school movie. Ferris Bueller is my favorite. ah, but enid had to take a summer art class, so she technically was still in high school. it also captures that angst, alienation, unsureness, etc., i had in high school better than anything else i've seen. Guest Bruiser Chong Report post Posted April 21, 2003 Not much of a point of mentioning the ones that have been mentioned already, so I'll try and get some up here that I haven't seen in this thread yet. I'm more partial to 80's stuff, so if these sounds foreign to you, that's why. - Secret Admirer - Private School - Just One of the Guys

Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted April 21, 2003 Nothing wrong with being partial to the 80's stuff. It's certainly better than having Can't Hardly Wait or any of the American Pie sequels as the trademark movie of your generation. They're not exactly masterpieces, but I'll take the John Hughes stuff any day of the fucking week over that garbage. The teen comedy movies of the 90's pretty much sucked. The really good or smart ones get overlooked way too often. At any rate, I've done some reviews of a few movies that have been mentioned here and a few that haven't. I respectfully submit for your perusal.... Rushmore Ghost World Heathers Drop Dead Gorgeous Sugar & Spice The Doom Generation Election will probably be coming sooner than later. Guest RepoMan Report post Posted April 21, 2003 Breakfast Club Fast Times at Ridgemont High Pretty in Pink Not Another Teen Movie the worst 10 Things I Hate About You. I can't understand how this gets any love. It seemed like a Save by the Bell story with cursing and drunking thrown in to make it "realistic".
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2003 Seriously, anyone who hasn't seen Heathers should make it a point to go rent it. Why? In VH1's "I Love The 80s" multi-documentary, they talked about it and basically gave away all the good parts, so there's no real reason to see it for me. Besides, it was quite amusing to see Hal Sparks [Queer as Folk] mimic the "I love my dead gay son!" line. My fave most definetly would be Breakfast Club, which just OWNS all these modern teen-angst movies. A close second in the OWNage department would be Not Another Teen Movie. Guest notJames Report post Posted April 21, 2003 The Doom Generation I wouldn't count that one because it didn't take place in a high school. Other than that, I love that movie too. BTW, my definition of a H.S. movie is one that shows the inherent social stratification of high school, because without that, it's just another teen movie. With that, my list: Breakfast Club/Some Kind of Wonderful/Pretty In Pink (I count the "John Hughes Trilogy" as one*) Heathers Can't Buy Me Love * I don't count Sixteen Candles as part of it because it's more of a goofy teen romantic comedy and less of a high school dramedy like the other three. BTW, I hate the current crop of HS movies from the last 3 or 4 years. Absolute drivel.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted April 21, 2003 Breakfast Club will always be at the top of the list. Would Pump Up The Volume count?
Guest Crucifixio Jones Report post Posted April 21, 2003 You know I'm not the biggest fan of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but there ain't no way in hell I'd put Can't Hardly Wait ahead of it.

Guest notJames Report post Posted April 21, 2003 Would Pump Up The Volume count? Thanks, SP. That one edges out Can't Buy Me Love on my list. Can't believe I forgot that one, seeing as how I memorized the entire movie one summer. In fact, an acquaintence of mine was in that movie. "Everything decent's been done. All the great themes have been used up and turned into theme parks." Indeed.

Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted April 21, 2003 I don't know how in the hell I omitted the Porky's movies when I'm a huge mark for them. I think the "teen scene" of the last few years has made me lose sight of the classics.
Guest Bruiser Chong Report post Posted April 21, 2003 Ferris Bueller's Day off always seemed sorta overrated to me. It's an ok movie, but I was expecting something amazing after hearing so much about it for so long. If we're gonna count Can't Hardly Wait as a high school movie, then you definitely gotta give a mention of American Graffiti, which is fairly old but pretty influential to many things since. Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted April 21, 2003 spoilers about why it counts Spoiler (Highlight to Read): a lot of the movie revolves around High School, he meets his girlfriend in school, he floods the school, he meets Patrick Swayze's character in school (the golf course I don't REALLY count, because I'm sure he didn't know who he was then), the guys who are indirectly responsable for for the death of the aforementioned g/f are from high school, and I'm sure if she hadn't died and he hadn't shot Frank for running her over he wouldn't have let the engine crashing through his room kill him
Guest Bruiser Chong Report post Posted April 21, 2003 Yeah, are we talking about movies the dealt with high school life or just movies that happened to have a high school as the main setting, but didn't really factor into the story? Because otherwise, some of these movies don't really fit the criteria (October Sky, for one).
