Smartmarks Classic T.V. Show Tournament

In the thread for the other T.V show tournament, a lot of people expressed their desire to have more classic shows on the list. So, in compliment to that tourney we now have the “classic” television show tournament. To qualify all shows had to have been out of first run production for at least ten years (1993) or had a large bulk of their runs prior to that year. They also had to either have been in the Nielsen top thirty ratings for at least one season or been considered a “critical darling” (like St. Elsewhere for instance). The only exception to this rule were in certain specialty categories, as I know a lot of people would want representation in these categories. To make for some interesting pairings and simplify seedings, the first round match ups have been grouped by genre (with a little stretching). Clearly mark your winner for each round. I hope a lot of you like this better. Thanks. Depending on how many people vote, I'll probably close the first round on Saturday.

I love how there is no British comedy here. Yeah, Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, they sure weren't funny at all. Good grief! At least the other tournament has *some* British comedy! This one is almost as wonked up as that one!

Star Trek: I wanted to put it in, but it didn't fit the criteria I established. It was never a top thirty show nor a critics favorite. TNG fits a little better, but they didn't really fit the theme I was going for here.

 

British Comedy: The Avengers would be about the only British show that would have a chance of making this list. By going on Nielsen ratings, which is the American standard for grading hit shows, you're only going to get American entries for the most part. It's not like there are French shows or Russian shows or something like that on here in its place. The Canadian entries were added at the last moment as a suggestion by areacode. It was no slight to British shows, just consider this an classic American show tourney then. Maybe you should have an international tournament?
