Lost in Development #1

by Peter MacDougal

The days are getting longer again. I guess this old dog's getting to have too much time on his hands.

I suppose it really isn't worth complaining over. At least I still get a check in the mail every week. Every Friday it shows up in my box, complete with Chicago return address and Brian Applewhite's personal pre-printed signature. And then there's the monthly royalty check. Yeah, even now, from time to time, some longtime fan will pick up an old "Doggah in the House" or "True Champion" T-shirt, and I make a few extra bucks. I am often impressed by the loyalty of some of the people I've met over the many years I've been in this business.

That really should have read "bid'ness," shouldn't it? Maybe once upon a time it would, but since I've been out of the spotlight I haven't had to exaggerate my accent in quite some time. Besides, I'm writing this, not speaking, and it would just look ludicrous on the printed page.

So the boys from SWF magazine asked me to write an article about what I've been up to since I've left the active roster. Well, it's become fairly common knowledge that a couple of months ago I was offered a position within the Smarks Junior League in talent development, working behind the scenes as a trainer and road agent. As I understand it, I was recommended to Brian by several SWF staffers, including Mark Stevens. It's nice of them to think of me, and to give me another opportunity within the company rather than put me out to pasture. I may not be able to wrestle any more, but I still have something to offer.

There's a lot of raw talent down here in the Junior League. By the time this article sees print, Dace Night and Sean Atlas will have seen their first taste of SWF action, having been promoted to the main roster. Atlas is something of a milestone for me, as the first bumpee to have joined the SJL after I became part of the staff. Crow is another guy with a lot of potential -- but then, the SWF has known that for a couple of years now. That's how long it took for Crow to finally sign a developmental deal, the damn stubborn Aussie. We're training new talent from across the globe -- from the Maori Va'aiga to the Russian Viktor Tarakanov. These guys are hungry to get to the top of the heap, and with people like me, a select few may someday get their chance.

I won't mince words. This job suits me and I'm grateful to have it. But I do miss the old lifestyle. Unfortunately the progressive injuries I've suffered over the course of my career have taken their toll on me. My legs have been completely rehabilitated, to the best of my ability to heal without surgery, but I'm in no shape to wrestle again. It's a miracle I can still walk. The idea of surgery has been proposed to me in the past, but the risk is too great -- there's a chance it could fail, and in a worst-case scenario, I could be confined to a wheelchair. I'm not willing to take that risk.

So it's life with the Junior League. And it's a good job. I get to train the Leaguers in all the fundamentals and watch them make names for themselves. I live vicariously through them. Besides... what better way to pass the time?

Nice. Reminds me of Grand Slam's columns, which is definitely a good thing.
