Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted May 9, 2003 Also, Purple Rain the movie will beat out any of that namby-pamby Captain Eo/Moonwalker/Ghosts/whatever crap. Awesome concert performances, horrible hairstyles, laughable acting, "that ain't Lake Minnetonka," and MORRIS DAY AND THE MOTHERFUCKING TIME. Plus, are there boobies in Captain Eo? No way, man. No way. Prince is probably my favorite solo artist of all time, though, so you can tell I'm a little bit biased.
Guest Memphis Report post Posted May 9, 2003 Prince is near Quincy Jones genius levels. MJ is on a planet of his own. The problem I have with MJ is his direction in music, at times he does great pop music then there are the ballads of his which I hate so much. Who is he trying to perform for, the children which he cares so much for or the fans that remember him when he was black and performed with his brothers. Well I think he's trapped in the past. Back in the 80's and early 90's, ballads about saving the world and loving our children were considered great material and sent a positive message. These days our pop icons are sluts and drug addicts. You tell me if MJ would be better off being the way music company want their stars today. M
Guest spiny norman Report post Posted May 9, 2003 Back on the first page, Memphis mentioned that no 80s singer could attempt a nostalgia trip with people buying it. I know about 95% of people here hate her, but Madonna is still very popular. Yeah, her music quality isn't the same, but her popularity has not dropped too greatly. Michael Jackson's has. George Michael, too, has had fairly big success recently. Michael Jackson's contribution to the music world is not as huge as I feel people make it out to be. Also, MJ's music doesn't really have the durability of Prince's. If I listen to most Prince's songs, I could see it being popular nowadays. I don't see that as much in Michael Jackson's music. Because he really only ever had the one style, and it worked, so he stuck with it. Then by the time the 90s came, he kept doing it, and that's why so much of his 90s work is so hit or miss. Plus his cover of Come Together is probably the worst cover song I've ever heard.

Obviously this only applies to 80's stars who have been out of the spotlight. Both George Michael and Madonna have been consistently successful to some degree, more so with Madonna, who is most probably the biggest pop star on the planet. Compare Off The Wall to Dangerous and tell me MJ's only had 'one style'. He has adapted and evolved with the times, however due to the fact he only brings out an album every 5 or so years, I cannot imagine it is an easy task doing so. Guest Ripper Report post Posted May 9, 2003 Prince does also have a Oscar sitting on his shelf with the Grammys that he has won. Prince will never sell as many records as Michael(who will) but I still feel he is the better all around performer. His ability to stop and go into a solo during a concert...on what ever instrument that he wants...is something to be in awe of. Micheal can perform his ass off, but I don't think his music is up to par. I think it is comparable to Nora Jones and Britney Spears. Nora will NEVER sell as many albums as Brit, Nora has a better voice and better musical talent...But Britney can make a hit and is one of the best damn performers out there...So whos the better entertainer...matter what you're into. Great dance numbers, great singalong catchy hits, You'll side with Michael and Britney....you want wonderfully written and arranged music, with wonderful voices hitting notes that you would be too embarassed to try and sing along with...Go with Nora and Prince. Guest Human Fly Report post Posted May 9, 2003 MJ has had more hits, but for a while Prince wasn't even releasing his records in stores. Prince was selling music on the internet before half the people on this board (myself included) were even on the net. Also, while MJ is good and in the 99th percentile of musicians. I think Prince's songs are just better. I'll put Purple Rain up against any MJ song.
Guest My Eyebrow is on fire Report post Posted May 9, 2003 Prince is an engineering and musical genius. MJ's talented. But he can't touch prince.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted May 9, 2003 Madonna is popular because she can get the "flavor of the Month" DJ to produce and/or remix her songs. Was'nt Off the Wall a Disco album? I would rather listen to the last album Michael did with his brothers as The Jacksons. "Can You Feel It" is soooo much better than "Rock with You"
