Live action cartoon vs. male soap opera?

Aside from WWE sucking due to politics and petty/shallow decisions for pushes/depushes, am I the only one who thinks it's been hard to watch since storyline-wise it's gotten far away from the basics? Does anyone else miss the days when it was more straightforward and "simpler," back when there were just good guys, bad guys, gimmicks, managers, when it was treated like an athletic contest with long storylines and title reigns (yes, I know, Hogan as world champion...), etc? I kind of identify with what Bobby Heenan said about it being "over...they know how we do our tricks now."

Plus think about it, would you rather have necrophilia, Dawn Loves Al, etc., or One Man Gang thinks he's black, masked repossesser invades the WWF, etc?

I would take the old days as far as storylines and gimmicks. the storylines were great back then and built up so properly. I think the gaps between big shows back then has a lot to do with it too. Nowadays, these guys have about 3 weeks to build their feud, where as opposed to the old school they would have months to build.

I miss the simple days sometimes but I hate outrageous gimmicks so I'm kind of a stickler for todays shitty 'gimmicks' but the oldler longer storylines.

Neither, give me the days when it was a sport long before the carnies and side show freaks took over.

I miss the old days of mid 80's NWA... not so much the "old days" of early 90's WWE(F)

and I actually agree with Bobby Heenan saying "it's over." I hate to side with HHH on something, but I think Tough Enough did more harm than good. I don't believe it took away his heat... but I think it hurt the business. Everyone before TE knew wrestling was scripted or somewhat fake... but they didn't know how they did the tricks. Kind of like watching a Magic Show... if you don't know how something is done, it's more entertaining. But once you watch those magic secrets revealed shows, you can't really have fun watching a magic show later, because you know how everything's done... it's not a big deal

That doesn't apply for all fans of course... being a smark, we all like it for different reasons. But that's the way alot of old casual fans that I've spoken to felt. They couldn't really get into the WRESTLING anymore, because there was nothing look at and say "now how the hell did he do that without getting hurt?"

damn straight when you had a true world champ who would go to Europe for challengers.

I dunno, I've always preferred the more drama-oriented style. When done correctly, it's can be really entertaining. I'd like a nice balance between both styles, though.

Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat feuding because Savage tried to kill Steamboat by crushing his lung, and resulting in a true classic at WrestleMania III.

Tully Blanchard vs. Magnum TA in a feud of pure hate resulting in several basic but brutal brawls

agreed... I fucking love the Blanchard/Magnum TA feud. I just don't understand why WWE can't make good use of that tape library, pull out some old NWA tapes, and watch and learn. Not everything was good of course, but alot of that stuff was classic and riveting drama. Hell, I wouldn't mind them even ripping some of it off and updating it...

Lights out matches, Loser leaves town, DIVA becomes personal slave for a week? I would like to see some 6 man tag action but they would never have belts for a division like this considering the tag division is a joke right now on Raw.

Old days are much better for the focus of each opponent's athletic ability, but I sometimes tend to prefer the 97-98-00 type storylines where a lot of drama was injected into a feud. Many feuds with tons of drama and twists worked out really well (see Austin/Bret, Austin/Rock, Angle/Benoit, Jericho/Rock). The problem with today's storylines is that the blowoff to even a decent feud is horrendous, thus the viewer is not grabbed into the product, he's pushed away.

Nowaways we get bullshit "edgy, shocking, provocative" TV which is just fucking immature and retarded.

However, back then the main event in WWE was Hogan and a big fat heel challenger. Lame. There were jobber squashes on the prime time "big" shows, and the talent pool was nowhere near the quality of today.

However, the simple angles that they'd follow through with were nice. Good commentators were nice to have.

Franky, no "era" is really to my liking, since I liked the 2000 wrestling-focused but still fun era, and got hooked on the mid-90's HBK/Bret stuff. If the wrestling is good, the storylines consistent and sensical, fat talentless slugs don't dominate the show and guys who work hard get rewarded, that's enough to keep me happy.

*I* miss the good old days. Gimmick-y stuff might be considered lame in our sleek and streamlined era right now, but look at the Hurricane. He's super-over (not that it matters, Vince!) because it's just a fun thing to watch.

I mean, it can't hurt the product anymore, can it? It's progressively getting worse, I don't see how trying to tweak it a little bit (but maybe not to the extreme Vince is taking it with Hogan, etc) would hurt too badly.

It's got to be better than 20+ minute HHH/Nash segments and Austin swilling beer.

Yes I do miss the "old days" of 80's early 90's NWA. However I don't miss the "old days" of 80's WWF at all.

"Old Days" of NWA had the serious vibe that I'd prefer over the cheesy, tacky, kids oreinted "old days" of WWF.

If i was 9 years old and back in the 1980's, then yes but not now, but i truly miss the era were the WWF/e used to build new stars w/o any politics runnin' the company into the ground.
