Guest Tyler McClelland Report post Posted May 11, 2003 The Pirates are gonna pwn the Reds. Erm. Okay, we suck too. We still pwn the Reds, though.
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 12, 2003 How about a 6-1 homestand. Now its off to St. Louis and Seligville for a little fun. Jim Bowden was just on television and said Griffey is going on the road trip and will play in either St. Louis or Seligville. I predict a 4-2 road trip. Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 12, 2003 You are such a homer man...
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 13, 2003 Lets see Graves vs. Simontacchi. I predict a reds victory, hopefully Griffey comes off the dl and jacks one out of Busch Stadium. I pray that in the ninth Scott Williamson is throwing the Cardinals hitters that nasty split finger fastball causing the poor red birds to go down in defeat. Guest Grand Slam Report post Posted May 13, 2003 Huge Reds fan here putting my two cents worth in... The Reds are not as good as they looked last week. That having been said, I don't think they are as bad as they looked earlier this season. They are starting to remind me of the 1999 "Win at any cost" Reds that almost made the playoffs. The thing that might make the difference though is this year, the Central is weaker than normal. The Cards are good, but really streaky. The Cubs are... well... the Cubs, always one injury away from falling apart. Houston seems to be a little lost, not really pulling together as a team. Pirates and Brewers are a non-factor as far as the full season goes. My boys in Red have a chance. But one way or another, I will be a fan and am planning on hitting the new ballpark a few more times during the season. Hell, I rooted for them in the mid 80's when they were losing 100 games, I won't abandon them now. Besides, listening to Marty & Joe in the spring & summer is a ritual around my house... Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 14, 2003 Thats 1-0 on the road trip. Home runs by Dunn and Kearns and good pitching from Wilson. Aaron Boone is finally putting it all together at 30, just like his brother.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted May 14, 2003 Griffey's back in the lineup Friday. Hello 4th place!
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 14, 2003 Griffey is already back. He pinch hit tonight and will start wednesday.
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted May 14, 2003 I'm past caring about Girffey, and besides they said his shoulder could pop out again at any time, even if he is just swinging the bat. Why do they even have him in the lineup if he is still that fragile?
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 15, 2003 Another win. Danny Graves pitched a complete game shut-out and the reds beat the Cardinals ace matt morris in St. Louis. I told you it's over. Believe
Guest Grand Slam Report post Posted May 15, 2003 As far as Griffey goes, anone with a dislocated shoulder faces the same chance of re-injury. Just the facts of life. For my part, if the team doctors think he is OK to go, then what do I know? The terrible part about the injury though is that he was looking pretty good before hand. Hopefully, he can come back to the level he used to play at.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 15, 2003 I hope Reds fans dont get misguided by the fact we're beating ONE team pretty soundly...Let's see it happen with others first... Hell the expos swept the Giants...iS IT the year of the Expo? Hell no.
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 15, 2003 I can't believe we lost to Garrett Stephenson. Why did Boone start Taylor and Guillen giving both Griffey and Kearns the day off? Why did he not pinch hit Kearns for Castro and then put Pena at third and move Boone to second? I realize Pena might have made and error but Kearns would have been the go ahead run and there were two outs. You must play to win. Its almost like he was happy with 2/3. Guest Bosstones Fan Report post Posted May 15, 2003 I can't believe we lost to Garrett Stephenson. Why did Boone start Taylor and Guillen giving both Griffey and Kearns the day off? I realize Pena might have made and error but Kearns would have been the go ahead run and there were two outs. You must play to win. Its almost like he was happy with 2/3. Dude...you don't win them all. Chill a little, and savor the fact that you took 2 of 3, because remembering this stretch of the Reds' season may be all that provides you comfort when September rolls around and your team is slagging in the lower half of the Central. Guest Grand Slam Report post Posted May 16, 2003 I can't believe we lost to Garrett Stephenson. Why did Boone start Taylor and Guillen giving both Griffey and Kearns the day off? I realize Pena might have made and error but Kearns would have been the go ahead run and there were two outs. You must play to win. Its almost like he was happy with 2/3. Whoa whoa whoa whoa!!! The answers to your questiones are pretty simple. "We" lost to Stephenson because on any given day, any pitcher in the majors can beat any team. Kearns has played most of the last two weeks and even the best players (with the exception of Cal) need a day off now and then. Griffey's shoulder is still, as mentioned above, in danger of injury and that danger increases if the muscles aroundthe joint are tired and stretched. When might that happen? A day game after a night game. He didn't pinch hit for Castro in your scenario because Pena is a liability to the team. He was pretty darn good here in Dayton - in single A ball - a year or so ago. But unless he gets some serious playing time there is no way he becomes the "star" everyone thinks he should be. Now, I am not happy they lost. But I am not jumping off the bandwagon. The key is winning the series. if you win 2/3 of your games a year, you are playing .667 ball, which right now is good enough for first in 4 out of MLB's 6 divisions. Figure in that you'll be swept a couple of times, and you will sweep some series it all evens out. So losing yesterday won't kill their chances at a winning season. we aren't even two months into the season yet. It is a little early to call the Reds champs or chumps. Myself, all I ask is a good season, over .500 ball for the year. That would keep them in the playoff hunt in the Central until deep in September.
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 16, 2003 I am too happy with winning 2/3. But you have to take the chance and put Kearns in for Castro. Chances are someone won't even it the ball to Pena and chances are he would make the play, he did play some third base in spring and looked good. Boone said he forgot about Pena, absolutly inexcusable. Just because winning 2/3 is good doesn't mean you shouldn't try to win the third game, especially against the Cardinals. My point wasn't that Kearns or Griff needed a rest my point was the stupidity of resting them both on the same day.
Guest Grand Slam Report post Posted May 16, 2003 I disagree with you on nearly every point. Wily Mo Pena is a waste of roster space, and it pains me to say it because I was a huge fan of his here in Dayton. He can't hit, he can't run the bases and he doesn't play enough to get into a defensive groove. If you are trying to win the game, why do you put a sub-par fielder on in a crucial spot in the game and pray that someone doesn't shoot one down the line right at the kid. In baseball you play the percentages, and the percentages just weren't there for having Pena in the game. And about pinch-hitting for Castro in the first place, a hitter who has been taking their cuts all day is just as likely to get a hit as someone cold off the bench. And if I am remembering the linup correctly, which I probably am not, the pitcher's spot would have come up very soon and you want to save your big Hitter for that. And I am not saying that they shouldn't have tried to win, I'm just saying that losing yesterday isn't the worst thing in the world.
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 16, 2003 But the game was on the line right there. It doesn't matter about the pitchers spot because by the time you got down there the game would have already been tied or the reds would have had the lead. Don't bat Pena but put him in for defense. What does that hurt. If he makes an error it might cost you the game but at least you got to the bottom of the ninth, instead you didn't even get to the bottom of the ninth. Pena played third all preseason and was pretty good, besides how many balls would be hit to him, you brought up percentages and that just makes my point that chances are he would get an easy play and might miss a hard play but in an average inning how many hard plays would he get? Kearns is a much better hitter than castro and I would take a coming off the bench Kearns over a played all game castro anytime. I do agree with you that pena is a waste of space but Branyan is coming back. He hit the first ball totally out of Great American. He rocked one over the smoke stacks and across the plaza level. They said it had to go at least 520 feet.
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 16, 2003 I really don't want to move Boone back to second after how he has hit at third but think about this potential lineup: Larkin ss Casey 1b Griffey outfield Kearns outfield Boone 2nd Dunn outfield Branyan 3rd LaRue Catcher
Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 16, 2003 I'm more intrigued about 2004 with Larkin gone for all acounts and purposes... The reds have a roster that makes You wish they had the DH rule where Branyan and Gullein switch spots while Junior swings in his 45 homers and 130 RBIS...
Guest Grand Slam Report post Posted May 16, 2003 As much as I despise the DH, I have to agree. But for just once, isn't it nice to have that problem in Cincinnati? I remember the days of "If there is one signifigant injury, the Reds are done." Now, we could pull through.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 16, 2003 Exactly...We have roster of players like Encarcion and Gullien that mean shit for the most part but make up for an injured player... And all of them are seemingly interchangable... Gullien, Mateo, Castro, Taylor, Branyan and I'm sure there others...
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 22, 2003 Only 1 and a half out now. We just beat the Braves, who happen to have the best record in baseball, twice in a row. God damn Adam Dunn killed that ball. The offense is finally starting to click. Hopefully we can make a trade to get a good pitcher. I would give anything to get Al Leiter from the Mets. Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 22, 2003 Al Lieter? Where has that name popped around for Cincy? Can Anyone tell whose gonna be a F.A in the Pitchers market next season? Hopefully Cincy takes that Larkin Contract to a solid #2 pitcher.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted May 22, 2003 I know Rick Reed is a free agent. He's not likely to remain with the Twins and he's a former Red. He's not exactly Millwood but they could get him at decent price and he's always struck me has a better NL pitcher.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 22, 2003 Reed? We'll take him... Isn't Schilling a FA?
Guest geniusMoment Report post Posted May 22, 2003 I just brought up leiter because the Mets suck so bad they are looking to unload veterans in order to get prospects. They would need to eat his salary but the reds would be willing to give up prospects, along with someone like Casey, since the Mets need a first basemen. Guest alkeiper Report post Posted May 22, 2003 The Mets will move Piazza to first eventually. I really don't see what the Reds have to offer in their farm system.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted May 22, 2003 The reds have about 1435 Outfielders all said to "Have great potential"...and we have like two infielders even playing Minor leauges...
