New York City pondering becoming 51st state

No way it will happen, although we all know about the major trouble that New York City is having trying to meet its budget.

Washington DC has been trying to become a state now for a long time, but that never works out, and I think it would make more sense for DC to get statehood than NYC..

Former Mayor Ed Koch, known for his blunt statements, said of the notion: 'It's bullshit. It's a lot of talk about nothing. It's a schmucky idea. I said that when it was first introduced, and it's still schmucky.'

I find that funny, but only because I remember him as the judge on the first redo of "The People's Court"..

dang it..WASHINGTON..

Aren't we still debating to put Puetro Rico as our 51st state...?

Might as well... It's more American than the black hole Delaware.

Washington DC should not become a state. The reason it has never been a state is to avoid having the federal government confined in one particular state. I don't know how relevant that concern is anymore, but I don't see any real reason for DC to become a state. Besides, any city that overwhelmingly elects a crackhead as its mayor does not deserve a higher station.

There's no way that...

sees Dr. Tom's post above

Oh, right, the other Tom posted first, and I actually agree with him on every point.

Carry on.

The only way NYC would ever split into a state is if Long Island and Westchester joined in too.

Washington DC, of all of the places in the country, should NEVER be a state.

They've proven --- repeatedly --- that they will elect the most inept officials humanly possible and those officials will run the city even worse than anybody imagined humanly possible.

We should not let inept people be states.

I admittedly don't know much about Washington DC's mayors, but... c'mon... Pete Wilson? Gray Davis? Ronald Reagan (although knowing nothing about him other than his "don't vote for Ronald Reagan because he's an actor" election campaign, I doubt Brown would've been too great either)?

Anyway, what would NYC gain for becoming a state? What's the point?

NYC is big enough to become a state, but why come a state with a name like NEW YORK CITY?!? Doesn't city mean a large town in a state?

Only places that might come new states in the next ten years.

1: Puetro Rico

2: Quebec

3: Canada

Quebec won't become a state because of the extreme devotion to the French language and culture within that province. They WILL try to become their own country again and will probably be successful in their next secession referendum, which should be coming up within a few years.

Other provinces within Canada, though, are fair game, especially far eastern provinces like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland. Should Quebec secede, that would leave them pretty damn far away from Ontario, the nearest significant province. (I don't count Nunuvit because it's mainly tribal lands that no one wants to live on)

As for New York City, there's always the possibility that the southernmost part of the state could break away and become the state of South New York, much like West Virginia broke away from Virginia and became a separate state during the Civil War. I won't make the requisite joke about the rest of Virginia being glad that they were going, though.

There will be no new states ever because it would fuck up the perfect 100 in the Senate. Unless we unify the Dakotas, there's no room for another state. NYC and DC should not be states, nor should Puerto Rico, nor any Canadian province.

Please never compare my home with West Virginia.

Hasn't Puerto Rico turned down all offers to become a state. I've read they benefit more from remaining a territory.

I forget the exact specifics, but I think territory/statehood pros and cons are fairly even, with Territory slightly edging out.

Speaking of which...Would any care to elaborate just WHY we have two fucking Datokas, Two fucking Carolinas, Two fucking Virginias...

Seriously...Put them BACK together...

California oughta be split in half if anything...

Also...If Rhode Island is a FUCKING island...WHY IS IT A STATE?

Actually the full name of Rhode Island is "The State Of Rhode Island And Providence Plantations". Rhode Island being an island off the mainland, Providence Plantations being the said mainland. I don't know why I know this.

It wouldn't fuck up the Senate, because each state has two senators. Didn't you take government in high school?

It would temporarily screw up the House of Representatives, which IS capped at 435, but that would be fixed at the time of the next census.

EDIT- Silly me... it would screw up the House if the Canadian provinces join. If NYC becomes its own state, it shouldn't mess with the House at all.

Yeah, but the reappropriations would just keep the cap as it is, like you said.

Also, I'm not sure what's so bad about electing a cocaine user... after all, our current president used to indulge in such activities as well.

BTW: Just to be fair, Clinton was a pothead too.

So yeah, electing a druggie isn't that bad.

iirc, they aren't allowed to vote in national elections, but pay no taxes.

It is when they're as glaringly incompetent as Barry was.

I live in the D.C. area. I know how bad he was.

And I also know that D.C. should NEVER become a state. You don't know how fucking INEPT (it's Mike's word, but it fits, damnit) the city administration is. Christ, a few weeks back half the city got virtually shut down because some asshole on a tractor - A TRACTOR - threatened to blow himself up.

And let's not even get into how crippled the city was for at least a solid week when the snow storms hit around February.

Just remember this: you better pray that terrorists don't attack D.C., because we will be royally FUCKED to deal with it.

Uh.

DC WAS hit by terrorist attacks.

Williams hasn't done a... terrible job, but I'll agree that Barry was pretty terrible.

And if it weren't for some quick thinking by the "Let's Roll" guys then it very well could have been two DC attacks.

Delaware has no sales tax, that's a very good thing.

By that reasoning, Hawaii shouldn't count.

Dames

Hawaii is an island chain, Dames. (The proper name for that escapes me right now.)

Hey, can't say I didn't give it a shot. :P
