Jesse Jackson is at it again...

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday he plans to protest Alabama's decision to hire Mike Shula at the state Capitol next week.

Shula was hired as football coach Thursday over Green Bay assistant Sylvester Croom. Jackson said in a telephone interview from Chicago that he wants to draw attention to the selection of Shula, who is white, over Croom, who is black.

Croom was an All-American at Alabama and spent 10 years as an assistant coach with the Crimson Tide.

Shula, son of NFL coach Don Shula, has spent 15 years as an NFL assistant, including the past three with the Miami Dolphins. He played at Alabama but has no experience as a head coach or on a college staff.

"They chose culture and legacy over excellence and it's insulting," Jackson said.

A message left with Alabama athletic director Mal Moore seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Jackson said his Rainbow/PUSH Coalition was organizing a rally at the state Capitol for Wednesday night to address the coaching situation and other issues related to racial inequality in Alabama.

"This issue is just suggestive that the culture of racial exclusion ... is still prevalent in Alabama," he said. "It's not just in football coaches, it's in bank lending, mortgage lending, the criminal justice system."

Jackson said the decision to hire Shula showed that the state has not progressed far enough beyond its segregationist past.

He compared the university's decision to hire Shula to Gov. George C. Wallace's "stand in the schoolhouse door" on June 11, 1963, when Wallace sought to prevent two blacks from enrolling at Alabama.

"Wallace ... blocked the doors many years ago," Jackson said. "Now you got athletic departments closing the doors."

Alabama president Robert Witt and Moore told Jackson before they hired Shula that they were considering minority candidates for the job.

Croom was interviewed along with Shula and Carolina Panthers coach Richard Williamson, who is white.

I guess the con-man didn't see the interview with a black writer from the Atlanta paper on ESPN. He said Croom was fortunate not to get the Alabama job at this point in time. He also didn't wish it on anyone, with all the problems the program is facing.

You know when half the players are black would it really kill someone to give a black coach a chance? That's really the point he's trying to make.

No it's not. He's out there to draw attention to himself and try and raise money for his organization. Black coaches are interviewed for jobs all the time, which means they're getting an equal opportunity. That's all that's guaranteed. It's not Jackson's place to dictate hiring procedures to anyone. I'm not going to pretend that racism doesn't exist and that it doesn't play a part in a few hirings, but it's not the epidemic Jackson wants you to open your wallet and believe it is.

Jackson is a fucking racist and it's blacks like him that is the reason there isn't a black coach at Alabama and won't be for a long time. If you don't like it Jesse, then stay the fuck out of Alabama's business.

It's moments like this that I wish something really bad would happen to Jackson. Fucking self righteous racist bastard.

No, Grambling never had a white coach, my thing is this guy has been on coaching staff for a while, so why not give him a shot over a guy who doesn't have any experience and just got the job because who his father is.

Grambling been coach by Eddie Robinson for the last 40 or 50+ years before he retired and now Former Superbowl champion QB Doug Williams coaches the team, and he was a former player and assistant coach before that, so your "reverse racism" arguement doesn't hold weight. Same thing in Bama's case you have a former player and was a current assistant coach but they didn't give him a shot, and make it worse they give to a guy who doesn't have any experience. Its not right no matter race you are, but hey thats how it is, and thats Jackson is arguing about.

I'm not sure how long Mike Shula has been coaching but he has so he has experience.

I don't see what the problem is. Neither guy has ever been a head coach, so it's pretty much a level playing field from the get-go. Of course, Mike's last name probably did get him the job, but hey, that's the University's decision, not some deadbeat fucktard who uses his own race to line his own goddamn pockets.

Jesse, Cochran, and Sharpton all need to take a hint and shut the fuck up about crying racism over every single head coaching position that becomes available.

Yeah, Jesse Jackson can take a legitmate argument and automatically take away all of its legitimacy.

But in actuallity, the fact that there has never been a minority coach in the SEC history dispite having the qualifications is something that should be mentioned. But in the end, it is the school that takes the wins and losses, so if they want to go with some name instead of the better cadidate then they are the only ones in the position to lose. It's something to point out though...nothing to get your panties in a bunch over.

If anything somebody should be on the Hornets ass's for firing Paul Silas because "They don't feel he can get them to the next level" and then going after Tim FUCKING Floyd who in multiple seasons in Chicago didn't reach pauls one year total.

I agree.

Anyone think this crap is gonna keep up until someone finally tells Jackson, Sharpton, Cochran, etc to fuck off?

I see what you mean, but where's this "better qualified" candidate at? Crooms and Shula have never been head coaches, so really, there's not a whole lot of difference between them other than Mike's last name.

I think the point is more to point at every case where a minority could have been realistically hired. When you have a conference that has never in its existance hired a minority for any job opening anywhere, they will try to point at it and bring it to attention. Sadly, when someone like jackson does it people automatically write it off as nonsence due to most of the crap that comes out of his mouth now being nonsense.
