Bret Hart comes to Jericho's aid.

Bret Hart's Calgary Sun Column for May 9, 2003

According to the poll on my web site some of your favorite columns that

I’ve written have to do with behind the scenes stories about wrestlers.

Here’s one that I heard just last week that kind of reminds me of David and

Goliath.

Making his way back into wrestling circles is Bill Goldberg, who is most

famous for his incredible undefeated string of victories in WCW. Not to

mention that he’s the guy that accidentally kicked me in the head in December

‘99 causing my career ending concussion. He kicked me much like a wild

bucking horse and literally nearly knocked my head off my shoulders. I still, even now, have a tear in my neck muscle the size of a quarter that will

never heal, to prove it.

I was told by a former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, who coached

Bill Goldberg, that if he had a whole team of Goldbergs he’d win the

superbowl every year.

People ask me if sometimes tensions in the ring ever carry over into

serious fights in the dressing room. Not usually , because nobody wants to

fight and get hurt - and not get paid for it., But now and again sometimes

the best wrestling matches take place in the dressing rooms or showers. One

such incident happened a couple of weeks ago when Goldberg made some less

than kindly remarks about young Chris Jericho.

Goldberg’s wrestling ability often resembled that gorilla in those

old Samsonite luggage commercials. He had a tendency to injure everybody he

worked with and took his own publicity a little too seriously.

My sense about Chris Jericho, a local Calgary kid, is that he’s always

been easy going with an even disposition.

The one little thing that Bill Goldberg didn’t take into account is

that Jericho was trained in my dad’s dungeon !

Although I’m sure Jericho doesn’t pretend to be a shooter he does have

a decent wrestling background.

As I understand it Chris approached Bill in the dressing room and

asked him politely if he’d come out in the hallway where they could talk in

private. Heads turned when Bill suddenly broke into character, bizarrely

growling like he does on TV! Goldberg suddenly gripped Chris by the throat in a furious rage.

The

little scrappy Calgarian, who is nowhere near Goldberg’s size, nonchalantly

wrestled him to the floor, clamping on a front face lock, which is every

shooter’s last resort and is comparable to having a bear trap clamped on

your head!

For the next several minutes Goldberg did everything he could to shake

Jericho off but no doubt all those long sessions when Jericho paid his dues

rolling around with Stu in the basement paid off! That tenacious

Jericho choked Goldberg out right on the dressing room floor, in front of

everybody. A reality check for Bill Goldberg - that’s been long over due!

I know when I talk with my dad he has a bottom less pit of these kind of

stories going back fifty years and I know he’s gonna love adding this one to

his repertoire. Maybe Goldberg should come up to Calgary and spend some time

with Stu in the dungeon learning how to wrestle.

Nope- Bret Hart isn't bitter at all. Very glad he was able to put his bias away for this column

Bret just put spin on things that he didn't personally witness. Anyone can do that.

Why shouldn't he be bitter towards Goldberg? It never once stated that his column wouldn't have any biases, so I see no reason why he shouldn't be allowed to express his opinions and biases in his own column.

Goldberg has this kind of stuff coming to him, that's what happens when you have the maturity of a 7 year old who think's he's superior to everyone in the lockerroom.

Bret needs to make his damn mind up...

One Minute he doesn't blame Goldberg for anything...

The Next he retreats back into the same old bitter Bret...

Doesn't Matter anyways...

He'll still be alone a shell of his former self while all his "Mortal Enemies" are still on top...

Guys...I really think you are overreacting. This seems to be much more of a comical article then a serious one.

this was almost as retarded as bret's old column talking about being eager to face the ultimate warrior. he wasn't there, doesn't know jericho, all he has to go on is hearsay. i understand that he's pissed at goldberg for just shrugging off that injury and saying "tough shit," but this column was just ignorant.

He has a right to be bitter towards him but that means Bret has no room to comment on the Jericho v. Goldberg situation. He wasn't there, doesn't know what happened and is just lashing out against Goldberg for something completely unrelated. That doesn't make me want to read his column

"The tenacious Jericho"

That right there makes me think Bret did this column as an over exaggerating joke. I doubt he was serious. It is kinda funny seeing you guys jump on Bret as soon as he does something like this.

We're jumping on him because he wasn't there and really doesn't know what happened.

He should go back to writing about how bitter he is and how Vince screwed him

Do you guys actually think the Jericho incident has given Goldberg a wake-up call, or do you think he'll keep starting these sorts of problems again real soon because "He's Goldberg!"?

the ultimate warrior column was pretty much a joke as well, but that doesn't mean it wasn't retarded.

Someone has done a 180 on the Goldberg situation.

"Is there anything else, Mr. McMahon?"

This column is just kind of strange.

Oh shut up Anglesault. In every single thread I post you always come in with that stupid little smart ass comment without ever you know making a point as to how I am being a WWE apologist or whatever stupid term you come up with.

How is what I said being a WWE apologist? Of course since every other time I ask that question you can never give a straight answer.

I never officially said Goldberg was in the right. I just don't think someone like Bret Hart who has bitterness leaking out of his skull has a right to comment on the situation.

But by saying that- that means I love everything WWE does and think the product is just fantastic. That's why I ordered Backlash right? Oh wait...

Why wouldn't Bret have the right? He can say whatever he wants.

The day Meltzer or whoever posted this shit, everyone on this board was saying the EXACT same thing. "The small Jericho beat up big bully Goldberg", so it's alright for everyone here to say it when they know even less than Bret, but he says it and a moral outrage breaks out. Hypocritical if you ask me.

Here's the real question...why can't Bret be bitter? If someone walked into your job and even accidentally ended your career wouldn't you be a little bitter? But it seems that just because he and Goldberg are famous he should just shrug it off no matter what

Maybe Bret was just proud that it was his old man that prepared Little Man Jericho to be able to embarass a big guy like Goldberg.

as i understand it, bret in the beginning wasn't bitter about the multiple concussions themselves. i've repeatedly heard him shrug it off, not blame goldberg, & put more blame on wcw for pushing him like they did before he was ready.

i believe what changed his stance was something RF asked in the second shoot interview, about how goldberg didn't care about injuring him and not feeling any remorse. IIRC, bret's response was something like, "well, maybe someone should kick him in the head and end his career." so, at least to me, it seems like he's bitter about goldberg shrugging the whole thing off and not the injury.

Wait a second... some of you are saying that Bret shouldn't have the right to comment on something he didn't witness?!? This is a smart mark board... we ALL comment on things we don't witness on an every day basis. WE have the right to do that, but Bret, a former wrestler, doesn't?!?

If there's any time to use the "pot calling the kettle black" reference, it's in this case

You people amaze me lol

One reason Brett came to Jericho's defense is because Jericho either paid or helped pay for Owen Hart's funeral. That and he's probably known Jericho since he was 20 years old.

Bob I'm beginning to think you're a gimmick poster. Are you trying to get heel heat to carry over to your 411 columns? You take prevalent smark opinion on a particular subject and state the opposite EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME. It's really gay.

Smarks: WWE SUCKS.

Barron: It's quite good.

Smarks: HHH SUCKS.

Barron: He's quite good.

Smarks: Jericho > Goldberg! Bret Hart said so!

Barron: Goldberg's quite good. Bret Hart is biased.

Jericho gave Martha Hart a cheque for $3,000. But Martha never cashed it
