Gay Characters in Televison

I was wondering about you guys opinion on the protrayal of the Homosexual Community on Network/Cable televison.

Whom has been the best representation and whose has been a bad representation...

I would Imagine that Will Truman from W&G and Jack from Dawson's Creek would have to be the best Representations of An Homosexual Character on tv in Network TV...

With Ellen Degeneres character being the worst...

Other than the fact that she constantly talked about it and her show went to total shit, I wouldn't think Ellen was a bad representation of their community.

However, I suppose it may have made gay people look bad in the eyes of us commoners. Of course, that would then lead to some morons thinking that since her show went to shit after she came out it means that "gay people are bad"

I meant more as representing the community in terms of their characters...

Ellen I believe was a Horrible Representation because she tried to hard to make it seem like she was breaking down doors when she merely wasn't...

She decicded that Promoting her sexual orientation was more important then the good of a popular and well recieved show.

I thought Beecher from Oz was pretty good, although he wasn't strictly gay.

Is the guy who plays Jack on Will & Grace gay in real life?

He was gay for the stay at first, but then he fell in love with Keller, I was iffy on that storyline, but happy with the way they ended it.

Willow from Buffy is a good portrail. Unlike Ellen, 100% of her being on tv isn't "look at me, I'm gay." Plus she's a powerful character

David and Keith from Six Feet Under are good.

How can Willow be a good gay character when the actress is so clearly very uncomfortable in her love scenes? She has been a good character, just not a good gay one. The guys from the British version of Queer as Folk were cool, as was Carter from Spin City.

Will Truman is a good representation, I think. My best friend is gay and he reminds me of Will and vice versa. Jack, on the other hand, is kinda stereotypical. You know what I mean? The lispy, wave-your-arms-like-mad, over the top drama queen? Yeah. Although he is pretty amusing. (I haven't watched that show in ages...)

I know we are discussing TV here, but I was just watching As Good as it Gets on TBS and Greg Kinnear's portrayal of Simon was fantastic.

What about Jack from Dawsons? Wasn't he involved in the first gay kiss on TV?

I think the first gay kiss on T.V. was back on Soap with Billy Crystal who was one of the first openly gay characters on television. I'd have to double check that.

Wasn't the one on Will & Grace the first on primetime network TV? I remember NBC hyping the shit out of it.

He's as straight as David Hyde Pierce!

Hey, buddy!

What's that suppose to mean?

FYI, David Hyde Pierce is pretty much an exact opposite of Niles.

Pierce... is... gay?

I didn't know that.

Ok, from what I can find the kiss on Dawson's Creek was the first directly shown open mouth gay kiss between two men on the air. Some mild stuff had been done before that, from what I was talking about on Soap was about the first time another man was showng kissing another on the cheek in a romantic way and the first time a gay relationship was really given any serious weight.

I don't have an opinion. Sorry.

But I like the "Gay John" character on NYPD Blue...

Jack was the longest teen gay kiss on TV, I knew it was something.

Rosanne. 'Nuff said.

They promoted the hell outa that kiss.

And I think that Willow is a good portrayal, maybe better w/ Tara than Kennedy, but still good. It isn't OUT THERE, it's just who she is.

wait wait wait, when did Willow turn gay?

Willow became gay in Season Four when Oz left and she met Tara. That's all I remember, I didn't watch much of Seasons Four or Five.

And I think Carter from Spin City was a good gay character as well.

You haven't kept up. :shakes head:

In Season 4 Oz left, and Willow met Tara through a Wicca group. they teased a relationship all through the season, untill she finaly chose Tara over Oz in the Ep. when he came back and was captured by the Initiative. That was also the Ep when she finally told Buffy about Tara, methinks.

She's been Gay ever since, a stance I'm glad they did not turn their backs on when Tara died. Makes it more real, IMO.

I haven't kept up because during 4th season I had to miss a couple episodes, I can't even remember what ones they were now, I saw Graduation 2 and didn't really know what was going on. Then I got back into it during college, but in the episode where she suddenly had a sister I assumed that was the signal of the shows quality ceasing and I stopped watching. I hear it's still good, so I'd like to get back into it.

And she was hinted as gay in an episode where Buffy and her pals face, mm... themselves as a group of vampires.

Vamp Willow looks very comfortable while she was holding, again mmm. herself.

An at the very end, Normal Willow said something about "And I think Im gay (not sure, I only saw this episode on spanish)"
