Promo: Closure

*RING RING RING*

Dace Night grabs his cell phone from the dresser in his hotel room and places the receiver against his ear. “Hullo?”

“Dace?”

An uncomfortable silence follows. “Johnny.”

“Would you talk to him, please?”

Dace runs his free hand through his hair. “There’s nothing to talk about, Johnny. He needs to move on, is all.”

“Look,” replies Johnny, “If you’ve got a problem with me, fine. I’m not too crazy about you right now, either. But he’s just a kid; he hasn’t been doing this as long as us. He doesn’t understand about the business aspect like we do, and right now, he’s really hurting. He feels betrayed. Can’t you just talk to him, at least so he can have some closure?”

Dace looks up at the ceiling, a pained expression on his face as if to say, ‘why me?’ “Fine. Tell him to meet me at the Varsity in an hour.”

“Thanks, Dace. For what it’s worth, I appreciate it.”

“Right.” Dace ends the call and shoves his phone into his pocket. He grabs his sunglasses and the keys to his rental car and heads out of his hotel room, shaking his head the whole time. “I never should have gotten involved,” he mutters to himself. “I should have minded my own bloody business…”

AN HOUR LATER

Inside the Varsity restaurant, Wildchild is seated at the counter, dressed inconspicuously in a Nike jumpsuit and with his hair pulled back. He is fidgeting uncomfortably as he waits for his former tag partner, Dace Night. At that moment, Dace steps inside the restaurant and Wildchild waves him over to where he’s sitting. Dace removes his sunglasses and walks over to the counter, stopping a few feet short of the Bahama Bomber.

“Dace,” Wildchild greets the Highpriest of Horrorcore with a nervous smile.

“Hullo, Dominic,” replies Dace uneasily.

“Please, have a seat.” Wildchild waves his arm over the stool next to him. Dace looks at the stool waveringly, and then suddenly shifts his gaze away, looking around the room, before finally settling his eyes upon Wildchild, who continues to look at him with an innocently frightened expression. With an exasperated sigh, Dace plops down in the stool next to him.

“Dace, what happened,” asks Wildchild. “Was it something we did?”

“Look, ‘Nic, I know you’re disappointed about me not wanting to team back up with you and Johnny, but this isn’t anything personal, okay?”

“Well, what is it, den?”

Dace runs his hand through his hair and sighs. “When you and Johnny got bumped, and I was left in the JL by myself, it made me remember why I came across the pond in the first place.”

“Are you mad at us for getting bumped,” asks Wildchild uneasily. “It wasn’ my idea; I wanted to stay! I didn’t want for them t’ break us up…”

Dace bites his lip and blows air sharply through his nose before replying. “’Nic, you’re not listening. I have my own career to think about, okay? I had specific goals in mind when I decided to come to America to join the JL. And I enjoyed hanging out with you and Johnny; those were good times. But, it wasn’t getting me where I want to go, so I needed to try something different.”

Wildchild’s usually friendly features dissolve into an apprehensive frown. “Surely we can accommodate you on dat, Dace! Whatever it is you need t’ get where you’re goin’, I’m sure me an’ Johnny can help you!”

Dace shakes his head. “It’s nothing personal, okay? I think that you and Johnny are doing a great job in the WF, but I’m not trying to get where you’re going. Besides, you two have a different approach to wrestling than I do; our talents don’t really compliment each other as much as they should, and sooner or later, we’d probably get in each other’s way.”

“How can you say dat,” asks Wildchild. “We were great as a team!”

“Were we really,” asks Dace in reply. “Check the records. ‘Nic, I don’t mean that we didn’t have good chemistry; we always got on smashingly! It’s just that we’re headed in two different directions, is all.”

Wildchild looks down at his feet and sniffs at the air. “Believe me,” continues Dace, “this isn’t a decision I made lightly; I never meant to hurt you or Johnny. But this is something I need to do for myself. Please try to understand that.”

Wildchild looks up into Dace’s eyes, his own eyes shimmering, barely holding back tears. “I’m sure you t’ink I’m bein’ silly,” he says. “It’s jus’ dat you an’ Johnny were my first two friends in dis business. It’s already bad enough that you have to go do your t’ing. I can respect dat, but having to fight you, too? Dat’s a very hard pill for me to haf’ta swallow!”

Dace reaches over and gives Wildchild a friendly slap on the back. “’Nic, no matter what happens in that match, and afterwards, I’ll always consider you a friend. There’s no need for this to be the end of the world. I don’t want to be your enemy, I just have to go do what I have to do, okay?”

Wildchild smiles weakly at his former partner. “Okay.”

Dace breathes a sigh of relief. “Good. Now that that unpleasantness is out of the way, let’s get something to eat, shall we?”

Wildchild’s smile widens into one of his trademark grins. “Let’s.”

The two enjoy a few chili dogs and catch up on old times...

A nice but kinda sad ending to Wild and Dangerous Nights and a very nice closure for the upcoming tag match. It's cool to see you guys break up as friends rather than enemies, which seems to happen a lot around here. Again, I'm still sad because this was one of the first big face alliances in the JL in a long while. I know the bump hurt it, but I was really hoping it would stay together. Good luck on the separate paths, you guys.

Gone, not forgotten.

But I can see one last run in for old times sake, simply because the fans will demand it.

I have fans, wow!

Excellent execution to sort out any confusion that might happen at the show, and yes, it is sad to see a great group break up.
