SELL ME ON: Kevin Smith!

Recommended Posts

Guest notJames

I don't think recasting TS would have saved Mallrats from becoming almost everyone's least favourite Kevin Smith film. It was just a very weak story that would have been better served as an episode of 3 South or something of that eMpTy-V ilk. Probably its only redeeming quality was the frontal nudity of Joey Lauren Adams and Priscilla Barnes (although the latter was 10 years too late).

It seems like everyone raves about this guy and his movies but I've never actually watched a full film of his (although I think I've seen parts of all the movies).

That example posted is pretty funny though.

What's the deal with Ben Aflack and Matt Damon? Are they friends of his or something?

As for the "nobody talks like that" argument:

Come to the Northeast, and find somebody who isn't a complete boozehound to talk to.

I'm surprised at the J&SBSB love on the board, especially from someone who seems as smart as Dr. Tom. I personally thought that movie was okay for the first twenty minutes, shitty for about an hour, than okay for the rest of the film.

Agreed.

The movie was kick ass upon first watching because of the anticipation. But it is by far the least enjoyable after numerous viewings. Just the "whats going to happen next" aspect of J&SBSB made it a great movie-going experience, but after that, its pointless fluff.

Dogma is thought of by many as Smith's worst movie. But it all depends about one's personal religious preference to like it. If someone is deeply involved in Catholicism, they'll understand the humor, and form an opinion from that. Many people who are well learned in Catholocism, but think its garbage will get a kick out of it. But those who don't know a thing about the Catholic church and their method of practicing will HATE this movie, they won't get a thing and WILL HATE IT!

I should have really enjoyed the movie, and I do to an extent, but the casting of some of the character irked me to high hell. Affleck and Damon were great in their roles. Chris Rock was tolerable in his...I guess. Jason Lee was pre-2002 Jason Lee, so he ruled. But Linda Fiorentino? Alan Rockman? Selma Hayek? Acck, I just didn't enjoy their inputs to the movie at all. None of them seemed to be playing a character, just their normal selves.

The movies going like this, in the great Banky's opinion:

1. Chasing Amy

2. Clerks

3. Mallrats

4. Dogma

5. J&SBSB

I don't understand the Mallrat's hate. It is a pretty one-dimensional movie with subpar acting, but the dialogue in it is Smith's best. The one liners by Brodie only compares to the mass string of hilarity by Banky in the first 40 minutes of Chasing Amy. Sure, the ending was fairly lame, and the whole concept of it STUNK, I just enjoye it immensly. Still do. And I probably watch it as much as any of Smith's other movies.

Unfortunately, Smith seems to have lost his young ambition that endeared him to his thousands of fans. I respected the fact that he had average actors/actresses in his movies, and depended on his great scripts to make the movies memorable. It proved to be a platform for their aspiring careers (Affleck, Lee profited the most). But I can't in good consciounce condone the casting of Jennifer Lopez. It irritated me to no end, and the move has turned Smith into a glorified spokesperson for the couple by drooling all over their "on-air chemistry". I guess the release of Jersey Girl will prove whether I am a View Askew snob or justified in my disgust with Smith. Heck, maybe the movie will be good.

But Smith can redeem himself if he gets Miramax to allow Lee to star as a young Fletch. Considering that would be the movie event of MY LIFE, I am praying it happens. If Smith settles with Affleck as a young Chevy Chase, I'll swear myself off the Askew corporation.

Well, Smith does always get the best out of Affleck so it wouldn't be that terrible.

However, Lee would still be a better choice. He's better at humor than Affleck is.

what i like about Smith movies is the dialogue and like someone said i speak like that sometimes, u know, saying stupid things but making it sound smart by saying big words and stuff.

I still need to see Dogma, Strike Back and Clercks. F'n Strike was here one f'n week !!!!

I just have one little complaint, on Chasing Amy, Jay & SB say they didnt like that "Snotchie Botchies" thing, but in Mallrats they are so comfortable with that, is like, and I know this is too much Simpson's comic book guy, a continuity bug.

smith put it there on purpose. it's an inside joke, referring to the way the critics panned 'mallrats'.

"Seems" indeed. Hmph. :P

I like it the best because it made me laugh the most. I'd seen the rest of Smith's movies by the time I saw J&SBSB, so I got all the references and in-jokes. Sure, the story's pretty thin, but I think the movie is a great sendup of Hollywood and the late-90s internet culture. Dogma is definitely better (and I could appreciate it as a recovering Catholic, now atheist), but J&SBSB has been very funny each time I've seen it.

And the outtakes are the bomb.

DH, get ahold of An Evening With Kevin Smith. It's very interesting, and I'm sure it would give you a better understanding of the man himself.

On an unrelated tangent... SP, that rendition of Spidey you have in your sig is the one I was hoping they'd use for the movie. I saw that it was one of the ones they were considering, but then they settled on the classic red-and-blue suit. The red mask and upper body, ending in a V and yielding to all black for the rest of the suit is MUCH better for these times, IMO. We live in a post-Matrix world, where heroes are expected to wear black, look cool, and kick ass.

Nah, you don't fuck with Spidey's costume. X-Men, fine. But not Spidey.

The costume they gave Spiderman was fine. It was an updated design of the classic costume with that modern look. It's not like they used his bright red and blue classic costume.
