Well done horror movies...

Basically, can anyone give me some well made horror movies to look into? I'm a huge fan of the genre but even the biggest fan is always missing out on something. Anyone? I'd prefer something on the original/unique side with some black humor for seasoning and all, but hell I enjoy cheese just as much almost.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I'd assume you've seen that.

 

I Spit On Your Grave... one of exploitation's finest hours. This movie genuinely sickens people in a way that I've only seen in one other film. That's a testament to how well it works.

 

Maniac... this is the other movie that brings about genuine revulsion and disgust like no other.

 

Driller Killer... full of the black humor you're looking for. Not as sick as people think, it's actually quite heavily satirical and yes, well done.

Maniac, I Spit On Your Grave and Driller Killer are all good times just waiting to happen. Great flicks, with Maniac being probably my favorite of the bunch. I've oddly enough never seen Repulsion, so yeah, I shall be checking that one out shortly.

 

Oh and if any of you have not seen Dog Soldiers...for the love of God, get off your ass and buy it now.

The unrated Dead Alive isn't even that different. It's not worth the search to find the unrated version just for some extra gore.

 

There's nothing wrong with the R-rated version and it still has more than enough gore.

I have Dead Alive on DVD and as far as I know, the unrated version is the only Dead Alive on DVD.

 

It is however drastically different if you've watched the movie far too much like I have. Although the R-rated version is still plenty gory and fine for what it is. I'd just prefer to have that little bit of extra gore.

I'll go the predictable route and say that "I Kick ass for the Lord" is my favorite scene in the whole thing. I mean my God, that preacher just opens up an industrial sized can of jelly whoop ass. And really, where do you get to see that every day?!

Well it's not like they completely removed the gore. Honestly as long as the story isn't chopped to pieces what's the big deal if some gore was removed.

 

If you have a choice you should always watch the Un-rated versions of any movie and I fully agree with that. However, the un-rated Dead Alive is difficult to find. It would be nice to see it, but unlike movies that were severly chopped up it just really isn't worth going out of ones way to hunt it down.

 

When i started a topic about un-rated vs. r-rated Dead Alive a few months ago, I was informed that there was just a small amount cut in the r-rated version. Something like a few minutes. This is what I'm basing this on, so I suppose I could've received bad info and that I'm mistaken.

 

Mistaken or not, there's still nothing wrong with the r-rated version. I mean come on the way you referred to it made it sound like it was horribly butchered and that it's unwatchable.

The Toolbox Murders - not overly gory, but brutal, and fucking funny

 

Premutos: Lord of the Living Dead - way over the top gore, zombies are killed with a tank, among other things

 

Baise Moi - a French rape revenge movie even more explicit than I Spit On Your Grave, has hardcore penetration and cringeworthy violence

 

The Untold Story - fucking sick Japanese horror, a dude chops up kids (on screen) and serves them in his restaurant

 

Riki-O: The Story of Ricky - you've probably heard of this, but if you've not seen it, do. Off the charts cheesy gore.

 

City of the Living Dead - good stuff from Fulci, not as good as The Beyond or Zombie, but worth having

 

A Cat in the Brain - Fulci's answer to Fellini's 8 1/2... tripped out.

 

Zombie Holocaust (US title: Dr. Butcher MD) - a blatant ripoff of Fulci's Zombie, even starring Ian McCulloch, but good just the same

 

Tetsuo: The Ironman - truly fucked up Asian cinema, not exactly horror, more like Eraserhead

Dead Alive is alternately called Brain Dead. Just depends on what country you're in. The unrated Dead Alive is the same as Brain Dead.

I would suggest maybe going back and taking a look at some classic horror, the Universal stuff from the '30's and the Hammer stuff from the late '50's and '60's. Some Vincent Price stuff too. Of that ilk, I'd go for:

If you don't mind a little bit of cheese, check out the Mario Bava films (I'd especially recommend either Baron Blood or Black Sabbath). They're Italian horror classics from the 60s and 70s, so the budget is small, the plot is thin, and the dubbing into English is laughable. But they're awesome movies nonetheless.

 

And MrRant, how can you own Suspiria and have no desire to watch it?!?

I'd suggest Return Of The Living Dead, but if you haven't seen that, then you shouldn't even consider yourself a horror fan.

 

I recommend $la$her$ highly, too. True, low budget, with some hideous acting, but something about it just "clicks." The gore is a-plenty. So are the fine knockers. AND...it's all shot as if it were one continuous scene. The cuts are virtually invisible.
