Guest Mr. Slim Citrus Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 Houston Chronicle: Tomjanovich to step down as Rockets head coach
Conspiracy_Victim Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 Well as a life-long Rockets (and most any other Houston team fan) I have mixed emotions. Rudy has been a visible part of the Rockets for 33 years in various capacities and it's a shame that the end came rushed like this. I hope he's over his cancer and can pick back up in whatever capacity the Rockets have planned for him. On the other hand, the Rockets aren't going anywhere despite the talent and at least a large part of the blame can be placed at Rudy's feet. His rep as a "player's coach" means that he wasn't very good at discipline, a bad thing on a team as young as the Rockets. With the talent the Rocks have they should have been in the playoffs this year at the very least. The fact that they weren't shows that the system we have in place isn't working and a change might have been in order. All in all, a sad day but at the same time an exciting one as a new era begins (new coach, new arena, and new uniforms thank God!).
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 I saw a bit of that press conference and I choked up a bit. Rudy T. seems like a decent enough person -- why can't cancer infect the scum of our society?...
Guest Choken One Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 First Off...It's Sucks for Rudy to have Cancer... Second Off...I guess this Makes Cleveland Nervous because Houston is more appealing for Van Gundy.
Astro101 Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 I'm from Houston and a Rockets fan and I'm sad to see him go. But on the other hand, I think a new coach would serve this team good. At least Rudy's still gonna be with this team in some capacity. Coaches rumored to be or soon to be contacted are Gundy, Larry Brown, Dunleavy, and Doc Rivers.
Guest Choken One Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 Larry Brown and Franchise? I'm THERE! Send Van Gundy to cleveland cuz LeBron/Gundy will be FUCKING funny as hell...
Guest Crazy Dan Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 It was a nice run for Rudy T, but I do think he made the right decision. especially since Rudy T is battling cancer, and the last thing he needs right now is a more stress. But, I do think his coaching career was a success. Two in a row is nothing to scoff at. The Rockets have a good young team with a bright future. They are one soldid offfensive player away from making the playoffs and going to at least the second and beyond. But I digress, Rudy will be missed. But I do think his time had come to move on. * Look for Yao continue to improve. This kid is the real deal. I think Francis and Yao could be the making of the next dynamic duo. But it will be a few more seasons before that beginsd to take place.
Gert T Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 You gotta remember though how good the Western Conference was this year, and out of the 8 teams, Utah is the only one that probably will not make it next year, depending on what Malone does. But I do fully expect the Rockets to make the playoffs next year.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 Larry Brown and Franchise? I'm THERE! Send Van Gundy to cleveland cuz LeBron/Gundy will be FUCKING funny as hell... Does anyone think Van Gundy with Cleveland doesn't work. Van Gundy is a defensive coach, Cleveland with the talent they have needs to be an offensive team. Plus Van Gundy doesn't have experience with young talent, taking over a veteran Knick team.
Guest Polish_Rifle Posted May 24, 2003 Report Posted May 24, 2003 Rudy was a good coach and seemed like a good guy. Barkley has nothing but good things to say about the man and that means a lot coming from CB who always has something wacky to say. I am still hoping that Van Gundy will be considered for the Clipper head coaching job because it seems like they have no clue, yet again, on what direction they are going in.
Guest alfdogg Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 Dunleavy, Brown and Van Gundy have all been interviewed according to SportsCenter. Brown is said to be interested in coaching the Clips, as well.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 How about teams looking at someone who hasn't been a head coach in the NBA before. Golden St. hired Eric Musselman and improved 15 games. Rick Carlisle took a Detroit team with not alot of offensive talent all the way to the Eastern Conference finals. Neither one of these two had been an NBA head coach.

Neither one of these two had been an NBA head coach. As far as that goes it seems that only Toronto will do that - all of their candidates appear to be assistant coaches who have had little-to-no experience as a head coach.
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 There are what. 6 open spots. Brown, and Van Gundy will get 2 if they want. Who are some other names that are being mentioned?

Paul Silas and Mike Fratello have also repeatedly come up. As has ex-Orlando coach Brian Hill, for whatever reason. Mike Dunleavy is also supposedly on a couple of teams' short list.
Guest Choken One Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 I'm thinking Silas takes the Philly job... Gundy takes Cleveland... Brown will take Houston.. I dunno about TO, Denver, LAC though...Maybe asst-coaches...
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Forgot about Silas. He wouldn't be a bad hire. I don't think Denver fired their coach.
Guest Choken One Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 I thought they did with Brown being rumored and all...
Guest Choken One Posted May 29, 2003 Report Posted May 29, 2003 Forgot about Silas. He wouldn't be a bad hire. Silas is PERFECT for Iverson... After Six Years of Brown breathing down his neck...He'll be better off with a sense of liberation.. Although I wished Portland didn't deny Mo Cheeks the interview... Cheeks would make AI into a man...

Guest Choken One Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 Think about it this way...If Iverson gets another HARDCORE coach ala Brown...He will refuse to go along with it... He went with it at Brown...Only after 3 seasons and knowing he was a legend.. Now you give him a Coach like Silas, In his 7th season as a Player...where he has matured a lot and a coach that treats him like a person will motivate Iverson...
Guest Vern Gagne Posted May 30, 2003 Report Posted May 30, 2003 I think Larry Brown treated Iverson with respect when he deserved it. I'm just leery of the so called player coach. Do they try too hard to be buddy buddy with the players and not put their foot down when the player acts up?
