Best/Worst Arcade Wrestling Game

Recommended Posts

heh, my mind is just going off on tangent after tangent...

Okay, which of the Arcade-released wrestling games were the best and worst and why?

Best (tie):Mat Mania/WWF Wrestlefest. Mat Mania and its sequel, Mania Challenge were simple but still fun to play. My favorite tactic in Mania Challenge was to use the running clothesline from behind as a finisher. Towards the end of the match, when you have your opponent beat to hell, you stun them with punches, manuever behind them and do a running clothesline. A bit cheesy, but fun to do.

With Wrestlefest I liked the three-stage progression of maneuvers, going from basic ones like snapmares and body slams, working up to atomic drops and pildedrivers, then finally using the wrestler's finisher. The best team in the game was DiBiase and The Ultimate Warrior, and I could finish the game regularly with them. That game have excellent depth for its time, which was 1991.

Worst: Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game. at first I was ecstatic that Midway would do a wrestling game, but when I saw that it was a gimmicky combo machine instead of something that could have been decent had they been serious about it, I was very disappointed by it.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I have to echo you Rendclaw.

Best: WWF WrestleFest - Nothing like going a couple of minutes with some buddies and the computer in Royal Rumble mode. I loved the 2 man dog-pile pin and nobody could touch me when I played Earthquake.

Worst: WrestleMania: The Arcade Game - It was just too over the top for me to enjoy. Wrestlers shooting fireballs at me and various food items flying out of Yokozuna from God knows where...it was like a cartoony version of Mortal Kombat.

Exactly... the thing that made it even worse than it was was that it had been several years since a good wrestling game had come out in the arcades.. and Midway put out that piece of crap, looking to cash in on the success of the MK franchise... back then, Midway could really do no wrong...

Best: WWF WrestleFest

This is exactly how arcade wrestling should be done. While I was extremely fond of Superstars, this game was just so much more. I so marked when a new wrestler would come down during the Rumble and they would show his portrait on the screen.

Worst: 3 Count Bout

Looking at this Neo Geo game, one would think it would be a pretty damn cool wrestling title. The characters are big, the graphics are colorful, and the whole atmosphere is quite nice. And then you play it...and you get your ass totally beat down. I would say this is easily one of the hardest games I have ever played. It is insanely hard to win just even ONE grapple! If ever there was one Neo game that epitomized cheap SNK AI, it's this.

Best: Wrestlefest, hands down. Whether you go for the tag belts or the rumble, you get your money's worth. And yes, the pile on pins did rule.

Worst: Wrestlemania Arcade Game. Everyone already said it. I play this game because I think there's actual wrestling in it. Instead, I get tombstones flying out of the undertaker and shawn michaels jumping clear across the screen from the top rope.

there was a cheap-ass game that Sega put out, and I can't think of the name... I tried like hell to beat that game and could not, but I loved the variations of the characters and moves... I'll have to check it out when I get home... the moves were pretty good, especially your wrestler's finsher, the 30 foot vertical leaping piledriver...

anyone remember that one?

Wrestle War? Anybody remember the wrestling game by Taito late 80s or early 90s?

i used to play wrestle war on my sega roms. it could get pretty hard sometimes, especially wrestling that hulk hogan rip off.

but one thing i hated about it was that one player could only get one person but two player could get nearly every damn character!

Does anyone remember a game called the Main Even by Konami? It was such a rip off of the WWF/E. on the cabinet it had this dude who looks almost like a carbon copy of mean gene. Im suprised the WWF didn't sue Konami for such a blatant rip off

Ah yes, the Main Event.... only WWF Superstars and Wrestlefest took more of my money...

A simple game, but so hard to master....

Unless your had El Condor and a quick button mashing hand..

Oh, man, been a long time since I've played Main Event. I just mashed the button as a kid and hoped I didn't run out of health before my mom came back from doing her shopping. I had no clue how to play it and I haven't seen the game in ages.

About WWF Superstars, was Macho Man the only guy that could slam Andre? It always boggled my mind that I could never do it in the game with Hogan but could with Savage.

Best: Saturday Night Slam Masters: Almost anything Capcom touches is sheer bliss.

Worst:

-Saturday Night Slam Masters II: I did say "almost".

-Wrestlemania Arcade game: What the hell was up with two people sharing the same meter?

The worst has to be the one Capcom made. I don't think they ever made another arcade wrestling game after that.

The first one was fantastic. The second one on the other hand did suck.

pretty weird how midway is about to be bought out by micro soft because they are in debt problems...so they can release MK only on XBOX

The Main Event OWNED!! I've probably dumped more quarters in that game than just about any other when I was growing up.

You could slam Andre with any wrestler but you had to inflict hella damage first.... Hogan and Warrior were easiest....
