Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted May 26, 2003 Was this released only in indy theaters/arthouses? I don't remember this getting much press. Needless to say I also rented this flick and was pretty damn impressed. If you know nothing about this film, I'll just say, it's a little bit Matrix and a little bit Minority report, and a whole lotta fun(gawd, I am a fucking dork). I don't really want to turn this into a "vs. Matrix" thread because a lot of threads around the net have done exactly that. I'd say the concept/theme is closer to Dark City, but the action is closer to Matrix. I really wish i had seen this movie in the theater because I have wasted money on a lot of CRAP the past year. I highly recommend this.
The Dames 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2003 I haven't seen it yet, but I hear it's awesome. To answer your question, yes, it was released in theaters, but I believe it was up against some big competition at the time and got almost no advertising. Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2003 Yeah it's on my sister's list on Netflix. If it's as good as what I've read has led me to believe it may be a "to purchase".
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted May 26, 2003 They only released it on a 300 screens last December with NO publicity. It didn't get beat by anything bigger, it wasn't because of competition. It's because nobody knew about it and if they did they couldn't find anywhere to see it. I remember it well. They never made a trailer for the movie until the WEEK it was released, so obviously the only place to see it was on the internet. It had no TV spots, no trailers in theaters, nothing. Dimension did the exact same thing to Below, which I haven't seen yet, but sounds like another winner. Ironically that trailer is on the Equilibrium DVD. This shitty ass company can put out a crappy Halloween movie and market it like nobody's business but they put out a movie like Equilbrium to just rot. Why put up the money to make such a kick ass movie and then do nothing with it? With even a SLIGHT marketing campaign it could've been a hit. With a GOOD campaign it could've been one of the biggest hits of the year. Hell, even the DVD got screwed. It didn't even get a insert sheet that listed the chapter names. Not even a setup screen on the menu. And the making of documentary is 4 minutes long.
The Dames 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2003 Wow. That really blows. Funny enough, they showed constant previews hyping the DVD before The Matrix Reloaded. Dames
Guest EsotericMaster Report post Posted May 26, 2003 This movie was up against Two Towers, Gangs of New York, Chicago, Pianist, Adaptation, etc....... I was going to see it in the theatre, but Gangs of New York got me instead. While GONY was a better film, Equilibrium is an awesome movie that deserves its share of attention. The only movies that opened against Equilibrium were Analyze That and Empire. I wouldn't say that was much competition. Adaptation opened on the same day but only in 7 theaters. Gangs and Rings came out a couple of weeks later during the movie's last week in theaters which was a week before Chicago or the Pianist came out.
Guest Urine Sane Report post Posted May 27, 2003 I loved this movie...I was even eating popcorn chicken in the theater while watching it (the movie was better then the chicken). I should pick up the DVD, the only way I heard about the movie was because a kid that works there told me about it. It's a shame that shit like The Lizzy McGuire movie can get tons of TV time and press, but Dimension can't even shell out a few million to promote this potential box office hit. Ignorance is Dimension I guess.
