Guest Lethargic Report post Posted June 4, 2003 I've heard the whole CD a couple of times now. Honestly I've never been a Metallica fan but I think this CD is good and believe me, I do NOT like saying that. I was really expecting it to suck. The production quality is piss poor. I do better recordings in my bedroom on my computer. I do not know what they were thinking when they did that. If you hate the production on the single, which I do, you'll hate it the entire time. But I do think that about halfway through the entire CD you'll get used to the way it sounds and it won't bother you as much as it does initially. It's still terrible and annoying but the songs themselves are good. So far "Dirty Window" is definantly one of the coolest songs I've ever heard Metallica do. I keep listening to it over and over. A lot of the songs are cool but have like one part that totally sucks. Like the first song Frantic, which is the last song they played on Icon, kicks ass until the chorus which goes "Fran-tick, tick, tick, tock." That's just so friggin corny I can't believe they thought it was a good idea. But the weird thing is that the bad parts make the good parts seem even better. haha If you're looking for old school style Metallica it's not on this CD. What you're gonna hear is something a lot more similar to recent Bush-era Anthrax than Kill Em All or whatever. If you can listen to it with an open mind and not have any expectations of what you think Metallica SHOULD sound like and get past the production, or lack of production, it's pretty good. Guest The Metal Maniac Report post Posted June 4, 2003 What you're gonna hear is something a lot more similar to recent Bush-era Anthrax I don't think that's a fair comparison. After all, Anthrax is still good. We've Come For You All rules.

This new Metallica CD reminds me a lot of lyrically and musically. Even the song titles sound like song titles that would fit on anything from White Noise to Come for you all. Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted June 4, 2003 Wow...so the bands that shared an apartment back in the day are now owners of similar sounds? Bad production doesn't bother me. I love the NYC-based power metal band Xenith, and they have awful production. Good tunes are good tunes, despite production. It's just the timing and lack of flow of "St. Anger" that's making me wary. That said, I'm still buying it, because if a non-fan can say it's good, it might just be. Guest Memphis Report post Posted June 4, 2003 Notice how he hasn't come back into the thread to actually explain WHY he was so masterful... Thanks AoO, personally, I prefer the Prog metal bands like Tool, mainly Dream Theater, to blow these guys away, in terms of better written songs and technical ability. Except for that hack Portnoy, he's got nothing on Lars man, nothing... *Points to sig* I didn't even realise this thread had blown to the size it is now, I had just recently realised this. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and being introduced to Metallica very early on, I found Lars Ulrich to be a very talented drummer. The majority of his work that I find best lies on ...And Justice For All!, which I'm pretty sure I've already commented on already. I never claimed Lars to be the greatest drummer to ever live, or that he's better than any other drummer YOU can think of, so instead of being retarded about it, act your age and and offer a professional and mature opinion on whom you class as your favourites. While I *FOUND* Lars to be great, he has nothing on John Bonham, who IS my favourite drummer of all time and will remain so. M

Guest DrTom Report post Posted June 4, 2003 I think "Sounds of White Noise" is an underrated album. Definitely. I snagged it as soon as it came out and still pop it in my CD player from time to time. Good stuff, that.
Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted June 4, 2003 I don't even like Anthrax, but that's one of my fav albums period. Anyone have that? A band you don't really listen to but there's one album they did that you love.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted June 4, 2003 After listening to it some more, I'd like to say that this album is WAY too long. 1:15. That's basically 20 minutes too long to me. At this point I can only get through about 9 songs before stopping it. The last two songs aren't bad but it's just, ok, I've had enough, it should be over by now. Like the single is just fine at 5 minutes long, but on the CD it's over 7 which is basically just 2 extra minutes of repeating the parts we've already heard. Every song should've had about 1-2 minutes cut out.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted June 4, 2003 And this is where solo's would be nice, as they can make a long song seem like it SHOULD be long.

Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted June 5, 2003 Better album than I expected it to be. Nothing mind-blowing, and barely worth the wait, but it shows SIGNS of trying to be harder...too bad they forgot the solo's.
River City Rocker 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2003 I think "Sounds of White Noise" is an underrated album. Am I the only one who's noticed that Sound of White Noise has been banished to the cut-out bins at most music stores, marked down to less than $6.99? Granted, it's a great record, but unless it was a colossal flop in sales, I don't really see why I'm finding quite a few copies at flea markets, Big Lots, or occasionally, on the countertop of any convenience store right next to endless country compilations and Cheap Trick's Woke Up With a Monster. Getting back on the main topic, I still haven't heard much of St. Anger aside from hearing the title track once this week. To be fair, I'll give it a few more listens before I decide if I think it's good or not. -Ben
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted June 6, 2003 I heard some tracks of it on my trip to Orlando and back Wednesday night/Thursday morning, and I have to say St Anger reminded me almost of pop-punk in a way. The song I mean, the whole album, just seemed like the timing was off and what really bothered me the most was James Hetfield's voice and lyrics. They don't go well with the music for some reason. And Lars is WAY overusing the double bass on the drums as well. It's like Lars and Rob are trying hard to be fast and metally, Kirk is just spaced out, and James is confused as to what the hell he should do. But I guess they realize they can put out any piece of shit and it will at least go gold.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted June 6, 2003 Face it. James isn't the brightest person that comes to guitars.

Probably because it's old. At the time it was a pretty big record. Had a couple of hits on MTV that were in pretty heavy rotation, made the top 10 list everyday. But that was what, 10 years ago? More? I doubt it's flying off the shelves today much like the rest of Anthrax's material. Which is a friggin shame.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted June 7, 2003 Just posting to say I've heard the 'song' now. It's Coldplay-league-bad. And that bypasses Good Charlotte et al, because they have the decency not to try and be any good when it would be futile.
