Pride Heavyweight Championship

Recommended Posts

I wanted a complete list of all the champs, which is self-explanatory, but more specifically I wanted to know how Noguiera obtained it. His match with Coleman was a Number One Contender bout at "Beasts From The East" right? But than I'm pretty sure Miniotauro won the belt by defeating TCH at Championship Chaos, which doesn't make sense to me because Heath lost a fight to Mark Kerr a couple of PPVs before, so why would he get a title shot in between? Or am I missing something here? Was the belt only handed out at that specific PPV, or was it just vacant at that point? If you can answer these questions, it would be appreciated, and if it really does have a history before than, a website listing all the champs would be great.

Thanks in advance...

Heath won the fight vs. Kerr at Pride 15 and also beat Tom Erikson and Enson Inoue along with a few others (was on a 4 or 5 straight win streak - thus justifying his spot). Nog beat Gary Goodrich at Pride 15, but I don't know whether or not his fight with Coleman was a #1 contendership, but I do know that Nog wanted to fight Coleman after Pride 15 and Coleman was the #1 ranked fighter in Pride having won the GP. Nog came off winning RINGS: King of Kings that year as well, so that heightened his status in MMA.

The event was called "Championship Chaos" because they were declaring the Heavyweight and Middleweight Champions (Nog vs. Herring, Sak vs. Silva)

Someone over at the DVDMB has an MMA title history site as well.

I could have sworn that Heath lost before the Noguiera fight, my bad.

yeah, it was a Number One Contendership match, much like a number one ranking I guess. It was funny because throughout the PPV they kept talking about Coleman and how he'd win, etc., which is why I was pretty happy to see Minotauro win, because they don't say you have the best ground game in the world for nothing. Similar case was when they hyped Heath to all hell in his Fedor fight, only to see him get manhandled. They kept talking about how impressive it was for Fedor to throw around 254 lbs, but Heath doesn't look very big to me, pretty spread out. I'd have said that Fedor has the weight advantage over Heath anyway, because he has that short compact build. I still like TCH though, and hope to see him back in the title hunt soon enough. Speaking of the same show, am I the only one who thinks Gilbert Yvel is the biggest bitch in the world? They don't call it MIXED martial arts for nothing, I would play to his weaknesses too, if only to see him whine after the match about his opponent was being a "coward".

*Looks at the site* Yeah, I thought they only instituted the Title at that PPV. Pride's heavyweight division is so much more stacked than the UFC's it's not even funny. What's next for Fedor, and I'm not talking about the next PPV because he will blow right through that, it will be a slaughter. Guy's name escapes me at this point. I'm particularly looking forward to the Coleman-Frye rematch, about two years in the making.

2 and 7 years. Frye came out of retirement when Coleman won the GP in 2000 so he could fight him. But UFC X was 7 years ago. Fryes interview on WOL was hilarious, and I hope he wins.

Nog's ground game is scary - his triangle on Enson Inoue at Pride 19 is sick.

Herring lost to Vitor Belfort at Pride 9. Which was his only loss in Pride until the Nog fight IIRC.

Fedor is so unassuming, which is why he is so scary. He looks bored in his fights, rarely ever changing his expression. The Herring fight was sick and I played the german-esque suplex again and again and again because it was so smooth. The surprises and upsets are part of what I love about MMA - to see someone be dismissed as a tomato can and dominate the match. It's so unpredictable.

I like Yvel cause he's such a dick. He posts over at sherdogmb too.

I'd call Yvel a black eye to the sport if he was worth shit.

Fedor's stated in interviews that he never believes he's going to win, nor does he ever feel as if he's in any danger, regardless of his opponent or lack of training. He's simply a machine, and when you manhandle a hoss in Herring and shrug off a submission expert in Minotauro, it's clear that you're on the road to something special. I think if fighting Yvel would be entertaining, if only to see him beat the crap out of him, and thereby shutting him up.

What did Frye say? Funny to laugh at or with him?

I like Gilbert. He is a dirty bastard of a fighter most of the time and yet still goes about wondering why people think that bout him. Nobody has topped his brutal one kick ko of Goodridge for sheer spectacle either. Probably the most perfect ko in MMA history and just for that alone I'll always be a fan.

That fight with Vanderlei still needs finishing one day as well.....

Yeah, Gilbert is such a prick - how can you not like em? He prides himself on getting yellow cards.

Frye was just lighthearted and good humoured, laugh with.

Frye almost always has a great interviews. I liked when they had Goldberg interview him before he fought a K1 fight against Le Banner at Shockwave. I think he knew he was gonna get fucked up but he was joking and having a laugh whilst most fighters would be in a state of worry.

Its crazy the fan reactions he gets in Pride as well. I hope he can get the win against Coleman and we get a few more crazy fights from him.

Shit, that was one of the sickest knockouts I have ever seen (up there with the Gary/Gilbert Pride 10 KO) as you could see the lights going out in Fryes eyes.

Frye is so laid back and self-effacing, it's great to hear. But DAMMIT, he takes a long time to get to the ring. He milks the crowd more than hogan!
