Guest Mole Report post Posted June 1, 2003 I don't know about you guys, but I love this movie. It didn't get good reviews, but it is a pretty good satire on all of the teen movies. I've never seen a satire that has made fun of so many movies. Plus, there are so many clever jokes, which makes if even more funny. They pay respect to past teen movies, such as the name of the high school and character names. From the top of my head, these is what it spoofs: She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, Can't Hardly Wait, Cruel Intentions, Breakfest Club, Rudy, Whatever it Takes, Road Trip, American Pie, Ferries Bueller's Day Off, Bring it On, and Varsity Blues. I am sure there are more, but those are just what I can think of right now. What do you fellas think?
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted June 1, 2003 I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I get a tad upset sometimes when they spoof Varsity Blues because that was actually a surprisingly well-made drama in my opinion, regardless of it being a teen movie or not. I REALLY loved the fact that the same guy who played Billy Bob in Varsity Blues played the spoof in NATM, though. This has been your resident Blockbuster employee. Thank You. Guest Mole Report post Posted June 1, 2003 I thought it would of been cool if they had all of the orginal actors play their old roles for this film. Of course the salary would of been SO high, and that would never happen, it would of been pretty sweet.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted June 1, 2003 I really, really hated this movie. Painful to watch. But the DVD did have some brilliant deleted scenes, mostly consisting of Randy Quaid stumbling around incoherently.
Guest Bruiser Chong Report post Posted June 1, 2003 First of all, it's definitely not a satirical film, it's a straight-up parody. When you're making fun of a particular movie or whatever, it's no longer a satire. A movie like Drop Dead Gorgeous or even Robocop make for a nice example of a true satire. As for the movie itself, I found it to be funny at times, but most of the jokes wore off fast and after a while, they were just beaten into the ground. Guest Downhome Report post Posted June 1, 2003 Why in the world did you call this piece of crap SATIRE of all things?
Guest Zero_Cool Report post Posted June 1, 2003 I marked for the "Lucas" references...but other than that, I found it kinda whack..damn! Er..yeah.
Guest Mole Report post Posted June 1, 2003 Definition of satrie: a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn That movie does that, so it qualifies as a satire.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted June 1, 2003 If you really want to call it satire, then fine. It's just a really shittily executed satire. The key with satire is keeping a straight face and, as your definition suggests, holding up human vice and oversight to criticism. Not Another Teen Movie is much more along the lines of Naked Gun or any other Zucker/Abrams parody in that it's very blatant, and not actually scorning human vice or folly. Technically it's undermining genre conventions, but it does so very poorly and, as far as I can remember from my one painful viewing, really clings to the notions it's trying to mock and only knocks them down with weak punchlines. Guest Mole Report post Posted June 1, 2003 Well movies like Naked Gun fall under the movie genre of satire, along with this movie. I know it isn't all that good, but I think it is very clever. It's one of my guilty pleasures.
Guest wrestlingbs Report post Posted June 1, 2003 This came out while I was working at Blockbuster. A lot of people, including myself, thought it was just another Scary Movie ripoff (which I hated in the first place). Upon viewing it, NATM is pretty funny in some parts, although pretty stupid in others. Best Part: The two guys race toward the airport. Because in every teen movie there is the nice guy who should get the girl but the quite-but-sensitive jock aways wins.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted June 1, 2003 My buddy told me it was on the same level as Scary Movie...I've since killed him for lying to me like that. I found it painfully unfunny. It had a couple moments that made me giggle. But for the most part I was just getting madder and madder about how I was not laughing.
Betty Houle 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2003 I think people need to differentiate between spoofs, parodies, and satires.
Guest welshjerichomark Report post Posted June 3, 2003 I thought it was terrible, the only funny part is when they are trying to find a girl for the guy to make into a prom queen. Other than it was the shits. Not another teen movie<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Naked gun
Guest areacode212 Report post Posted June 4, 2003 I actually watched this for the first time last weekend. The DVD had been sitting in my collection for about a year, and, having been in the mood to see some more of Mia Kirshner, I decided to finally pop this in (as well as the awesome Exotica, also starring Mia, but that's another thread). As a movie, it was pretty weak--it took FIVE writers to come up with this? Most of the jokes were either drawn out way too long (the toilet scene), beaten into the ground ("glasses and a ponytail") and/or weren't funny in the first place (nearly all the others). Also, I haven't seen a lot of the late 90s teen movies (Cruel Intentions, She's All That, etc..), so I didn't get a lot of the jokes. There were a couple of amusing scenes & lines though ("You would never suspect that everyone at this school is a professional dancer"), but most of the humor was just not very clever. Still, after the third viewing (I listened to the commentaries while redecorating/painting my room), I started to find the movie somewhat endearing. It looked like the actors were having fun (and they confirm this on the commentary), and I've found that it can make a bad movie/TV show less painful to watch. It's a silly little diversion...I own movies that are much more tedious & unendurable. At least the girls were hot. As a DVD, it's pretty loaded and was well worth my $5: two commentary tracks, a bunch of deleted scenes (one of which contains Chyler Leigh lip-syncing in her underwear), and some other crap. For you 24 fans, did you notice Rick in the movie, looking EXACTLY like he did on the show? Now we know where he went to hide from the Drazens.
Guest raptor Report post Posted June 4, 2003 It was a lot better than I expected, which isn't saying much. It was all worth it for the "Clapping" joke though. Genius.
Guest Mole Report post Posted June 4, 2003 Also, I haven't seen a lot of the late 90s teen movies (Cruel Intentions, She's All That, etc..), so I didn't get a lot of the jokes. Well if you haven't seen those movies, then of course you wouldn't get half of the jokes. I also like the movie because it has plenty of clever jokes, you just need to pick up on them. Maybe they are just funny to me, but I liked them. There is a lot of tributes to other films, but you might not know unless you pick up on them after watching it tons of times. Lacey Chabert played Amanda Beckett in NATM, while Jennifer Love Hewitt play Amanda Beckett in Can't Hardly Wait, and both of them were in Pary of Five. I got this one right away. Anthony Micheal Hall, which was in Sixteen Candles, Breakfest Club, Weird Science and other teen movies, was the name of the cafeteria. My friend actually told me this one. On one of the chalk boards, "I don't know" was written on the chalkboard. This is tribute to Fast Times At Ridgemont High, in which the same thing is written on the chalkboard. Took me forever to pick this one up. The high school is named John Hughes, which wrote Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferries Beuller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, and Breakfest Club. I didn't notice this until I saw the credits for FBDO, I saw the name of the director and remembered that from another movie, which was Not Another Teen Movie. These are the only ones I know, but I am sure there are others. These and many more reasons are why I love this movie. People say it isn't clever, but I think it is. Next time I see the movie, I will write down ever clever thing I see and post it here.
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted June 4, 2003 First time I saw it I only thought it was average, but I like it more and more with every repeat viewing.
