Promo: A Light Workout

Recommended Posts

The scene opens on the familiar confines of Frost’s basement gymnasium. The Velvet Hammer himself and his recent tag team partner and trainer, Longdogger Pete, stand in the middle of the ring trading wristlocks back and forth in a very casual manner. Both are stripped to the waist with Pete in his standard gray jean shorts while Frost is in a pair of tan slacks. The place is a lot livelier than their last workout, the lights are on full and smooth jazz can be heard wafting in from a jukebox standing against the far wall. Frost takes LDP’s wrist with his free hand and steps under the man’s arm with a twist in reversing the hold. Pete taps his shoulder and nods his head.

“Good reversal, I might turn you into a mat wrestler yet,” Pete quips with a smile.

“Just like you,” Frost replies with a slight scoff.

“Hey now!” LDP blurts and reverses the wristlock back to one of his own. “If you don’t have a basic foundation to start with you have nothing to build off of.”

Frost drops to one knee and grabs Pete’s wrist with his free hand again. He jerks to the right and snaps LDP over his head and down to his rear. Frost scoots in behind Pete and applies a loose chinlock.

“I don’t think we’ll be trading a lot of wristlocks with Craven and Atlas, especially Craven. What’s that old line…wouldn’t know a wristlock from a wristwatch?”

LDP reaches behind him to seize Frost by the back of the head and flips him over his body with a seated snap mare. Pete clamps on a chinlock of his own.

“I know how much you hate Craven and with good reason, but he is the US Champion, that has to count for something. I know you’ve never faced Atlas, but I have since my comeback and he’s not a guy to take lightly.”

Frost works his legs up underneath him and pushes against LDP to power his way to his feet.

“Don’t worry, I’m not taking anything lightly anymore, especially after the match with Wild and Dangerous.”

LDP readjusts into a headlock, but Frost pushes out of it to send LDP into the ropes. LDP bounces off the cords and heads toward Frost at half speed. Frost nonchalantly pivots around Pete as he comes past and stops him dead by pinning his arms above his head with a full nelson. Pete swats at Frost with his tied up hands, but the Icelander keeps his face out of the way.

“I know you blame yourself for that loss, but you came on real well at the end and you looked damn good against Nathan last week.” LDP grunts from the hold. “We have a tag title shot coming and after we win those belts you WILL take the World Title off of Tom Flesher.”

“Not a doubt in my mind…now.” Frost huffs in trying to keep LDP in place.

“Don’t get too overconfident,” Pete warns as he drags Frost closer to the near corner “that can be just as deadly as no confidence at all. Just when you think you have all the bases covered, you don’t.”

LDP walks up the ropes in the corner. Once he reaches the top turnbuckle, he kicks off and vault over Frost’s head to land behind him. Pete runs into Frost while he’s off balance and bashes him into the turnbuckles. They ricochet off and Pete flips Frost back for a rollup. The stay linked for a second until Frost shakes LDP off and they sit on the mat breathing a little harder than normal.

“Didn’t think you could do that,” Frost pants.

“Me neither,” LDP responds. “Just shows you that nothing is written in stone. Who knows what curve will come our way next.”

Frost slips underneath the ropes to the floor with LDP following. They move to a nearby workout bench with bottles of water and towels on it. Frost slings a towel around his neck and tosses Pete a bottle of water. “I tell you what, I’m looking forward to any curve that does come along. I’m looking forward to the challenge, any challenge.”

Pete takes a long drink of water than points a finger at Frost. “That’s one of the main reasons I returned to the ring. Missed the challenge of it all. I know I’ve been slow to get into gear myself, hell these little workouts do me as much good as you.”

“I say we’re ready,” Frost flatly states.

Pete allows himself a slight smile, “I’d have to agree with you.”

When I first saw you guys were tagging up, I didn't really get it, but now I love the pairing quite a bit. The characters are different but similar enough that an alliance works. I don't expect too long a tag run together since Frost is still so focused on Tom, but this feels like a partnership that will last longer than perhaps an official tag title pursuit. Good stuff.

I'm surprised to see how well Frost and LDP are meshing in these promos, but as Edwin pointed out, there are enough similarities between the two that I really shouldn't be. I like how stoic and businesslike the two seem while still managing to convey a certain sense of comraderie. I'm interested to see where this goes.

I'm really getting into LDP and Frost as a team, and this promo continues that train of thought. Bravo.

I've enjoyed reading the three promos of this series and am pleased with how the tag division has improved. I'm not as surprised as most by the Frost/LDP pairing, and I think this benefits both your characters.
