Promo: Itch

I could be asleep, but can you blame me. It’s 5:30 AM, June 3, 2003 and I’m in a good mood. I remember what I have to do, how close I am. When you have a goal it makes you work. Work hard to get back. I don’t want to beat him… I want to make him tap. I hate that beat me twice. It’s like a goddamn itch, but it helps motivate me. I can still remember that first day in March…

=====

As she walked into the room, her patience sat, looking out the window watching a tape that he brought with him. She straightens out her shirt and coughs once to let him know of her arrival – which causes him to look her over. She’s about 5’ - 6”, got on some sneakers, a pair of sweat pants, a blue shirt, tan skin, hazel eyes, and brown hair with highlights… not that he noticed, as he’s still looking at her ass…

“Heh, normally I’d raise my left leg and make some funny comment about, well,” he starts in an attempt at ‘kicking’ game. The woman looks at him and her expression ends that. “Yeah never mind,” pause, “but as you can see my legs’ already raised…”

"Okay," begins the lady after a light chuckle, with a slight pause and roll of the eyes, to look down at her clipboard, "Mackenzie-"

"It’s Mak." deadpans Francis, his face rapidly changing from the smirk he had before. She stares at him quizzically for a moment, surprised by the sudden coldness of his words. "There are only a few people who could call me that… and not to be rude, but, you’re not one of them-"

Mak tears his eyes away from her bottom and catches the look on the womans’ face, causing something to stir inside him.

Guilt.

"-Uh, must be the concussion talking." mumbles Mak. "I’m sorry, it’s just, you know… I’m sorry and I’m Mak Francis."

The young lady, probably his age, surprisingly, maybe even younger, accepts his apology with a smile and nod of the head. "Well Mak, I’d like to think that after we make it through this, we’ll be close enough that your opinion will change. I’m Anna-Marie Rodriguez and as of today, it’s officially my duty to help get you back on your feet and into that ring, being uh… Franchisable?" finishes Anna-Marie, not sure if she said it correctly.

That gets a heart felt laugh from Mak, before he speaks. “You’re pretty young to be doing this, aren’t you, uh, Miss Rodriguez?”

“Actually,” starts Anna-Marie, “I’m on an internship… Mak… and I think we should operate on a first name basis, since we’ll be seeing so much of each other.”

"Okay,” responds Francis with a pause, beginning to say her name but…

… she’s too quick to respond. "My friends call me Marie." states the physical therapist intern. Then the hint of a smile crosses her face “My father’s the only one who calls me Anna-Marie anymore.”

Marie extends her hand out, slightly grinning at her verbal one upsmanship. Mak smirks at the gesture and takes her hand in a semi firm handshake. "Heh, then let’s get down to business, Marie."

Marie releases Mak’s hand and walks behind his wheelchair, pushing the device through the open doorway. As they move, Francis attempts to reach a rather persistent itch through his soft cast and suddenly scowls.

“I NEED to get back as soon as possible Marie.” Francis continues to reach for the itch failing miserably. “Was the timetable really correct or can I come back quicker.”

“May I ask why?”

Francis’ face goes cold as she looks him in the eye. “I’ve got some business to take care of. I promised myself, as soon as I got this surgery that I’d do what I set out to do Marie.” responds Mak, giving up on the itch, while speaking in a tone some would place as… bitter. “It’s always going to nag me, bother me, until… until I can SCRATCH it – off my list that is.”

"Well, rehab is almost always tough, but I’ve seen SOME people come back early from knee injuries like yours. I’ll tell you right now, there will be good days and bad. You’re going to hate me one day and love me the next, but in about four months, Mak, six tops, you’ll be back-"

"Three." comes a quick reply cutting her off.

"Excuse me?" genuinely wondering what in the hell he means.

"Three months at the most… maybe less.” adds Francis, tone dead serious. “I’ll be back by then, one way or other.”

"Three months huh?" says Marie, careful not to scoff at her patient. “Well, if you’re back in a ring in three months I’ll be surprised, but I’d love to see it."

Mak smirks at her seemingly not believing his statement. "Then it’s a date."

=====

I pull myself up out of bed and strap on my black knee brace. It’s a little clunky, but gives great support and as I walk past the wheelchair, out the door, down the hall, and toward the workout room for my morning strength training, I remember a quote from my days in college, when Kink’s would go on his tirades because I’d half ass a shoot and STILL win mind you, after giving up two points to a cheap shoulder down from a reversal, instead of crushing my opponent 8 or 10 - 0…

“I want you to be perfect in every aspect of the game.” mumbles Francis as he walks, in a wonderful reproduction of his former coaches’ voice. “If that means waking up at 5:30 in the goddamn morning, that’s what you do…"

"Besides you got to get up early if you want to hunt goose eggs.”

It’s looking like another one of those good day.

Mak is on the comeback trail? Cool.

Neat little promo, quick and to the point. I like the Marie character, though I'm unsure what you intend to do with her -- which is good. Mak's determination is well-portrayed here, and the reference to his amateur days highlights that well. Good to see you writing again.

"Besides you got to get up early if you want to hunt goose eggs.”

This quote loses its meaning when there's no numerical score. ;)

But seriously, a very nice promo.

Whoo! Back the Mak, people! Rockin' to see you on the road to recovery, and a nice promo at that. It's cool to see you coming back with a motivating factor, and you just hating losing twice in a row is a perfect one for your character.

I back the Mak, and as always, admire your first person skills. You always pull off a compelling narrative. I've been waiting for Mak to get out of that bed for ages and I think it's going to be huge when he does.

I am replying to this promo to push the Ash promo farther down the page.

Ok, I think I vaguely remember who this Mak Francis guy is now. Marie to me just seems like a plot device and I don't know if the Mak character as we know him would benefit from having a relationship as a big part of his storyline, but the idea of him being so banged up that he has to have his own nurse at ringside could be an interesting twist.
